- Let's talk about the highest paying jobs for anthropology majors! As an anthropology major myself, questions on career plans are popping up left and right. So, this week I dove into research on the highest paid jobs for anthropology graduates. I tried to make sure there was a mixed bag as far as education levels go which should be helpful to those of you who aren't sure how much school you would like yo go to. Hopefully this helps all the anthropology students out there!!
Who am I? My name is Alivia Brown and I am currently an undergraduate Anthropology student at UCLA on a mission to find a career that I love. My major does not have a straight forward "path" as many would say and I am not only determined to prove that I can be successful in my major but also demonstrate my ability to find a career that brings me joy. I used to stress alot about what I would do with an anthropology major. After some research I laughed at myself as to why I was so worried. Plenty of jobs exist just not titled "anthropologist". Especially in the medical field.

I felt a little bit disappointed when most of the offers where more into marketing or sociology, since I want with a passion to work more in the cultural field aka maybe museums but you know without starving
Hey Aleisa! I completely agree with you actually because I would like to do something directly related to anthropology as well. I normally don't do this but I actually have a part 2 of this video coming out soon and it has a lot more opportunities that I think you may find more intriguing 🤫. Keep an eye out for that so we can "not starve," as you put, it together!

I’m not in Cali but I’m doing a archaeology degree in Canada. I’m going to st Eustatius next summer to do some underwater archaeology work on some shipwrecks. I’ve always thought archaeology needs a good tv show or Netflix series to get some hype for the field.

The best thing you can do as an anthropology major in the US is to put yourself in a position of cultural vulnerability (ie visiting developing nations). The culture shock alone will make you realize how dumbed down our westernized society makes us. The other lesson will be an understanding of how privileged we are to even study other cultures, artifacts, languages, etc.
As a campaign field organizer, I recruited volunteers, trained interns, knocked on doors, did advanced data entry and made phone calls for presidential campaigns. The most I made was $25/hr, which places this less than positions that are paid but I also lived in places with extremely low cost of living and literally paid $330/mo per rent. Honestly, these positions don't even require bachelor's degrees. And yes, in the course taught by the anthropology PhD (David Karjanen), we covered the visa system, particularly H1 visas.
I'm actually a marketing manager, and my social science/anthropology background honestly does help a lot. That said, I actually specialize in nonprofit digital marketing, which I feel is definitely more relevant to my interests/experiences, especially because I was a gender & sexuality studies minor and I work with LGBTQ organizations (and disability nonprofits, and environmental nonprofits, etc.) It definitely pays less than for-profit marketing, but I find it more rewarding

Great video! I would add IT or programming to that list. Over the years I have met more than a few people with backgrounds in history, sociology, and english working in an IT or programming position. There are plenty of programming jobs that only require a degree and train on the job. Many of those jobs can easily make someone $100k+ after just a few years and are not managerial roles either.
Hi Harry-thank you so much for this insight!! It is actually incredibly helpful! I think people in the social sciences can sometimes automatically discount IT careers as an option but this comment really sheds some light on that
I am a bit confused, why would u do an it programming job with a major in anthropology. Why not just take a computer science degree. I don't know about u but I think businesses are way more likely to higher someone in the computer science degree who already knows programming.
@@akshatghoshal6098 Doing computer science is pure code monkey work. Computers are tools that enhance the work, they are not an end in themselves.

Yes! Omg exactly. I always stress on the fact that skills that anthropology majors have are so relevant to the UX and human research related jobs.
very helpful video! i'm an anthropology major and i love the subject and learning more and more about human existence but i'm graduating next year and everyone keeps asking me what i'm going to do with it. one job i've been interested in is a national park ranger, although its very competitive, i've seen a few anthropology major go into this field.
I have also heard being a national park ranger is a pretty popular option! I love hearing this video was helpful :) I graduate next year too so the pressure is on haha. Hopefully a part 2 will be coming soon!

Aw I am so glad to hear that! Yes-corporate anthropology has rapidly become one of my priorities so expect that in the near future!

This is so sweet, I am so happy to hear that! And oh my gosh that is so exciting wow. I think either environmental anthropology could be valuable to look into but also I know there are archaeology programs associated with the national park service that could be helpful to explore. You got this!
It's strange that UX/CX research is not on the list. This role is highly relevant to the skills any anthropologist has. Besides, salaries for such positions in IT industry are pretty good.
I think rather manager positions are for business educated person with masters in human recourses.

Hi! I love your videos but Im just confused on one thing. I heard many people say that anthropologist and archeologists need a PhD or higher education for their careers. I’m quite unsure if this is just a “rumor” or if it’s harder to get jobs with just a bachelors

I'm interested in pursuing Socio-cultural Anthropology. In the past I aligned my career goals with the highest projected growth and salaries. However, as I experienced some life further my goals have shifted to prioritize a work-life balance and high job satisfaction.
I'd absolutely love to see a video discussing the most satisfying and/or "fun" but fairly challenging career paths. I'm aware that was an overly specific and personal criteria so I'd conclude with "most satisfying" with the understanding of its subjectivity and limited statistical data. Nonetheless, I'd be more than grateful for just hearing your personal opinion and recommendations.

im an anthro undergrad student in Brawijaya, so sad this major in Indonesia is like unseen. can i just move to ur country wkwk. now im still confuse how to start my career. i think that i have to go out from my label as anthro bachelor degree to start my career journey again from 0. just if u know, just imagined, u live in a town that so lots of barista's job vacancy, its like 10000+ that u can find it everywhere & everytime. so if someone found the major intresting but the salary was a more important factor to them they shouldn't really pursue this degree cuz most of these jobs have their own college majors

Hi Shay! That is completely understandable! I have the same concerns as an undergrad as well... Advice I've heard from my higher-ups is to be as open and creative with job applications as possible. And in some ways, I think it is a number game. Trust yourself an the process and good luck!
