Thank you for highlighting just how skilled a singer Steve Perry is. All of his vocal performances are flawless as well as powerful. IMO, no one else comes close.

Steve Perry IMHO is the greatest vocalist ever! His techniques are amazing and unmatched. His ability to deliver each word with such passion, his vocals just wrap around the heart and won’t let go. His pronunciation along with the way he punches certain words is amazing. And just think all that with no vocal training at all just amazing raw unmatched God given talent.❤❤❤❤

I've seen Steve and Journey twice, in 1981 & 1982, and live he is amazing. He is one of the three greatest voices in rock, in my opinion, that I've seen live. The other two are Ann Wilson, saw her in '77, and Freddie Mercury, saw him in '80 & '82.

Love your analysis. I, too, am a huge fan of Steve's. The only song where I heard Steve truly use falsetto is Something to Hide. The one that blows my mind for his mix is Captured by a Moment.

Not a fan of pop music, but have always been mesmerized by Steve Perry’s voice. I think everyone else pales in comparison.

Good 👍 analysis. 1 of the singers which I listened to when I was a young boy 👦.
Steve Perry was born and raised in Hanford, which is a farm 🚜 town close to the Bay Area. He is from a Portuguese 🇵🇹 family 👪.
He joined the band Journey. That band and I were born in San Francisco 🌉 . The band wanted a lead singer. Perry was in another band. But the bass guitarist Michael Richards Haddad died 😢 in a car 🚗 accident. Thus, that band broke up and Journey hired Perry.
Years later, he quit Journey. Lead guitarist Neal Schon saw Arnel Pineda in a Manila band and hired him.
Suggested other singers for analysis: Arnel Pineda and Morissette Amon.

He is the best technical singer I have ever heard. His control, as you say, was phenomenal - pitch, vibrato, head-chest-mixed(half) voice. His approach to each note, even the way he positioned his shoulders, arms and chest to maximize breath control and longevity was unlike anyone else. Freddie gets all the love, but he could not control his vibrato, and struggled with pitch - both were failures in his opera training, and he admitted to these struggles. He was a great front man / performer, but he technically wasn't a fantastic singer. I wouldn't put Freddie in my top 10 male singers. Perry is #1.

Freddie was a front man, great showman and this makes him more of a Broadway kinda showman, like he would of been great in theatre. Steve Perry had so much more soul, blues and feeling but I couldn't see him doing theatre, ya know?

@@AnthonyOrosco7Perry on Broadway? No. Mercury on Broadway? Maybe, but probably not. Again, he had pitch and vibrato control issues. He would have only been successful on Broadway because he is "Freddie Mercury", not because he is that skilled. I remember growing up in the 1970s and 80s. People liked Queen, but as much as they liked Freddie, they also made fun of him a lot; the overbite, the flamboyancy, the prancing, the spiked arm band, etc. Magically, after he passed away, all those insults and laughter disappeared. Everybody forgot how they used to make fun of him and was suddenly elevated to "best singer ever" status. It's baloney. Perry, Brad Delp, Paul Rodgers, Jimi Jamison, Mickey Thomas, Ann Wilson, Pat Benatar, Barry Gibb were all better singers than Freddie.

@@AnthonyOrosco7 I disagree. Steve certainly "acts" as he sings and he has great stage presence. I think he could have done stage, but went more of a pure singing direction. I saw a clip recently where the guy said he sat down with Steve to work on something and Steve ran through a whole range of different singers/styles. I'd even say that the verses of "Mother/Father" are not really "Steve Perry style" but start in a hard rock style and then transition into soul style, while the verses are what I would call "baseline" Steve Perry: that bright, clear tone. That's what makes it such an amazing performance.

Journey isn't Journey without Steve Perry.

The first few lines of Captured by the Moment are one of the few times he sings entirely in chest voice.
Many people don't recognize him when they first hear it.

No one ever reacts to him but you need to react to Russell Hitchcock. He sang Where did the feeling go and goes really high

You should listen to Steve Perry's vocals in songs called Lay it Down or After the fall, perfection as usual.
Don't know if you have reacted to a singer called Dimash Kudaibergen, I highly recommend listening to him, try songs called Show Must Go On or SOS.

Americans focus a lot on the singer’s abilities to hit notes. Mexicans focus on weather we believe what the singer is singing about. Not the ability.

I hope you can find the time to analyse John Farnham. If you think Steve Perry is good, I think you will be amazed at what John Farnham can do. He can do Pop, rock(and I mean as heavy as Led Zeppelin and AC/DC), ballads, blues and he can even pull off opera. His range has been noted as F2 - D5. Just be aware, it is a deep rabbit hole.

Personally, I prefer a simple reaction. "Technique" doesn't mean anything to most people. They just want to see how the song, artist and performance effects you and whether or not you like or dislike it. Thank you.

I suppose, a lot of your subscribers came here because you reacted on music they like. So I would say you ought to find compromise between what you like and what your audience like. Directly speaking I do not like pop music at all
