Surfing competition in Tahiti: Decision to hold event on Teahupo’o island criticised

- While the eyes of most Olympic fans are on Paris this week, one competition is playing out far from the City of Lights.
The surfing is being held in the French Pacific territory of Tahiti.
The decision to stage the competition in one of the island’s most remote villages was controversial.
Al Jazeera’s Alexandra Byers reports from Teahupo’o, Tahiti.

Money and power both corrpt. In the case of Tahiti, the French government is clearly demonstrating it's contempt for the people and the environment. Teahupoo did not need to be advertisrd. Those that were qualified and capable of surfing it at it's best already knew where and when to find it. Putting what are largely a group of small to medium size surfers together for a contest in small surf at a place that can become gigantic and life challenging in no way demonstrates world class surfing performance. Want to hold a contest at Teahupoo? Wait until it's 15'+. Watch how many of the current competitors would not even get in the water.

@@wearesatellites91 You probably mean well, so I will help you. Your wasting your time on something that would never constitute environmental harm. Long term monitoring would likely record a local (under the tower) increase in species diversity. Invest your time on gaining the knowledge and skills to perform the work so desperately needed to combat the habitat destruction occurring on a colossal scale.

Teahupo’o is in the top two waves in the World in my opinion.. the other being Pipeline in Hawaii. So far in this Olympic Games it has produced Beautiful and Very scary waves! 🤙🏽🏄🏽♀️💯
I am a Caribbean surfer and look forward to two competitions in particular on the tour. Pipe and here. I look at all the rest as well, but these two are the most epic.
Some of the waves today looked Frightening! Really makes you appreciate the skill of these surfer. 🤙🏽🏄🏽♀️🔥💯

Not to mention the scraping of the top of Teahupo'o's shallow reef, which will encourage coral bleaching. Thanks for this.
But the people are rarely if ever considered. Remember who they impacted when they were testing nuclear bombs.
All the fossil fuel powered watercraft buzzing around the Tahitian islands does orders of magnitude more harm to the reefs than any aluminum scaffold. Same with the planes flying to and from Tahiti. Also, the primary cause of coral bleaching is industrial pollution and anthropogenic climate change.
A big drop and a turn, then a tube…..which you make or you don’t.
Pretty boring after a while.
At least Pipeline has Backdoor to break up the monotony that break during comps.

Everyone assume this small islands cant wait to receive them, truth is , is super annoying get a clash of greedy cultures invading your town because of a OLYMPIC surfing contest. Its pathetic

@@andyetheridge Its mostly flat this time of year and millions of tourist descend on that area for July and August so even if there was consistent swell it would be a logistical nightmare
Tahiti is part of France, it's not "another country"
The French have some of the best territories in the world for surf, in the days of around the world airline tickets give me Air France any day.
We have been monopolized by surf companies for years, why not have the current best surfers surf one of the best waves in the world.
I’m sure the accommodation places and associated suppliers and associated workers are loving the income.

Most locals never wanted the Olympics in their quiet back yard ... but the government decided money over honoring what the locals want. And this village will be forever changed for the worst in years to come. On planet Earth it's always about the money and the locals can go you know where.
I bet if every resident got a piece of the money pie they wouldnt be complaining!

Please educate yourself. Many many countries have territory far from ther main land. Such as Hawaii. Guyana, US Virgin Islands, etc. That is not colonizing.

@@davidbarrett8058 what do you mean its a barreling slab of course you cant rip it like lowers LOL. It shows who has the most control in one of the heaviest barrels in the world, go hop on the lowers surfline cam if u wanna see turns.
