Benoît Peverelli’s short movie is a visual testimony of what is the recording of a Tinariwen album.
In this case Amatssou (2023).
It was recorded in the winter of 2022 in the Sahara desert where the borders of Lybia and Algeria meet.
Tinariwen’s musical alchemy is unique to the rare reunion of its members which live in different villages and countries around the Sahara.
This delicate chemistry between the musicians is important to the creation of Tinariwen’s particular sound and sensible to its environment, the life in the desert and its communities.
The filming took place at the end of the recording of Amatssou during the final weeks when most of the music had already been created and recorded.
Silence, infinite landscapes and poetry are part of life in the desert, and it is perhaps at the core of Tinariwen’s miracle.

This jear I visited the Tuareg in Djanet, was going with them in Desert and celebrated the Siba Festival with them. I life since 15 jears with Beduines in Egypt. So have a deep understanding for all citizens of the desert and feel with them the longing to be free in there one life. This video makes me cray...

(Tinarwein) always inspires me, i learned about this band more than a decade ago while watching on television the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup held in Brazil. and ever since these bunch of rebels have been a true inspiration, their cultural mood has a strong mystical feel to it. May you all always have peace in your lives.

Adónde ha quedado el romanticismo...
Ahora son todas cabezas pegadas a un teléfono...
Son herramientas que sirven para comunicarnos...
Pero no veo poesía ni música en ellos...
Las montañas son testigos...
De nuestro paso por la Tierra...
Mañana estaremos viajando...
Con la caravana por el desierto...
Nuestros espíritus...
Vuelan alto...
Como el ave que sobrevive...
Y canta por las mañanas...
Hoy, el presente...
Mañana, el futuro...
Pasado, ¿quién sabe?...
La única certeza del sueño eterno...

The wind blows and takes the words away...
Others will have to continue writing...
So that poetry continues to live...
In the solitude of the desert...
We weigh in music...
Silence awaits the sounds...
While a new musician tunes his instrument...

They are tools that serve to communicate...
But I don't see poetry or music in them...
The mountains are witnesses...
From our time on Earth...

Our spirits...
