I love how much air time she gets on her releases!
I'm not hating on Kocian, but I wish the commentators would acknowledge that even though Locklear sometimes takes a step on her dismount, Kocian always lands with her feet apart, which makes sticking that dismount much easier.

Much more extension, elegance and style than Kocian, take Locklear....she needs to up her difficulty at least another .2 though

This whole "will it be Locklear or Kocian" mystery is killing me. I'd personally take Locklear because I feel that she just has fewer deductions, and we all know the P&G judges are not being as picky about them as the international judges likely will be. The only edge Kocian has is that she could be thrown on vault or floor if absolutely needed, but the odds of needing her are SO slim when the team will have 4 other all-arounders. Honestly it seems more likely that Martha would pull in an alternate before she ever used Kocian on VT or FX, so she might as well take Locklear who is just a touch cleaner on bars.

I think looking at bars alone, Locklear makes it over Kocian since lately she has been consistently getting higher scores. That being said Kocian has the all-around edge over Locklear. It will be really interesting to see who they decide to take, they're really neck and neck at this point. Either way it's a shame, both are incredible on bars and have a good chance at medaling in the bars final in Rio. They are both so talented on bars and both deserve to be Olympians, but I don't see Marta bringing two bar specialists.

Nope. But we shall see at trials. Ashton was selected for trials to go head to head with Madison one more time. If Ashton again defeats her, she's going to Rio.
+K P93 I don't think so, Maddie proved she is a 58+ all arounder and scored the same as Ashton on day 2. I love Ashton and I wish she trained all the events but I think unless Maddie falls at trials Ashton will not make the team but could score an alternate spot.
The thing is, they don't need Maddie as an all arounder at all. It's good that she's training and competing all four events, but there's no way Marta would put her in a team lineup on anything but bars. Her AA scores in Nanning (other than bars) were 14.133 VT, 13.900 BB, 13.633 FX for hit routines. No need for those. Plus Ashton's been consistently scoring above Maddie this year. I agree with K P93; if she scores ahead of Maddie on both days of Trials, she's going to RIo.
actually marta has said her ideal team right now is simone, aly, laurie, gabby and maddie. she thinks that maddie and ashton are basically at the same level on bars (ashton's e score would go down significantly in international competition, while maddie's would only go down a bit relative to what she has already done at worlds) but what separates them is that maddie has other events. they dont need her as an all-rounder, but the USA always has so many injuries between trials and the olympics (Chellsie, Courtney, Samantha and McKayla) so Maddie is basically a built in alternate for floor, vault and beam if someone else can't compete. Ideally, they would just use her on bars but it is much safer to have Maddie than Ashton. Unfortunately, Ashton never really had a chance as Marta only wants people who do the AA. 2020 would be her best shot atm

My ideal team would be Biles, Hernandez, Raisman (I don't care what people say she was robbed of the bronze meal in London), Smith or Nichols and either Kocian or Locklear. Kocian may be the World Champion on bars but her vault is useless in the event one is not able to vault. This is going to be a difficult olympic team to pick. USA has so many talented gymnast I wish they would go back to 7 per team. Raisman was right in what NBC said there are so many talented gymnast in the US Martha could randomly pull the names of the other 4 on the team and we would still get gold

everyone is saying Maddie can contribute on more than 1 event... lol no. put laurie, gabby, and simone in aa for quals, and aly competing on 3/4 of the events, and Maddie just competing bars. that's how it would work out and no one understands that. and that's why Ashton should be put on the team over her, her bar work is SO MUCH more gorgeous plus she's been posting higher scores than Madison. I know Madison has the aa, but come on people, she won't even be used for that matter.
Why does her coach always put his hand up at her dismount?? Doesn't look like a spot...is he trying to show her how high to go or something?? Always thought it was strange.

She made the team because apparently Kocian's an AA gymnast XD. Ashton is the better bar worker any day of the week. All she needed to do was upgrade her bars even by one tenth and she would have outscored Madison on night one and two...She had higher execution on night one and tied in execution on night two.

If her scores were much higher than Kocian's, Marta would probably take her. Marta took McKayla to London just to vault, so it's possible. I just hope she upgrades for OTs.
McKayla also had FX though. She was also a solid(ish) all arounder.
the big 4 all brought a gymnast to london who only competed one event (kexin, paseka, chelaru, maroney) and only one didn't earn an individual medal
+Adelina Khasanova but McKayla was technically an all arounder who was limited to vault due to a broken toe. If she couldn't do vault, she wasn't going to be part of the team. She didn't know if she was actually going to compete until close to time. It's in her interview with Gymcastic. Kyla had to take her spot in FX during qualifications. If one of the AAs goes down right before qualifications or ends up being limited to just UB (Pezsek & Memmel in 08), there's no way they'd put in Locklear into FX or vault because she doesn't train them. Unfortunately, Locklear will probably be a victim of the five member team.
Ashton Locklear should've definitely made the 2016 Olympic Team instead of Gabby... she's better than Gabby and also more consistent. And if Ashton made the team then Laurie would've had a shot at the All Around as well. Marta needed to stop and think
It was either her or Kocian. If she didn't fall on beam, she would've made the team. Probably would have qualified in front of Kocian because they gave USA gifts. Laurie's bar set would've been in the 15.6 range with their scoring.
Did you forget that only 4 could make the qualifying for each event? With Simone, Aly, Laurie, Maddie and Locklear, Laurie couldn't make the AA or Kocian/Locklear the UB. Plus Gabby scored above 15.7 in the QF (UB), she only had a bad day at Finals, if not she would take the Bronze.
Gabby was the reigning AA world silver medalist, the reigning Olympic AA champion and had a great deal of international- and Olympic- experience. She was substantially more consistent on beam, floor and vault than Ashton and had equally, if not higher SV to Ashton. As much as this young lady was amazing, that team they picked was the correct one.
For a bar specialist there is nothing that excites me about this routine. It's beautiful sure but exciting and worthy of an Olympic medal? No. I'm a USA fan all the way but id rather watch a Russian bar routine any day because they are actually exciting and different to watch. Her bars just does nothing for me

If Ashton has a 7.o+ DV on bars, I would take her over Kocian even if her beam is questionable but that is not the case. She is really not guaranteed medal since the bars finals at Olympics would be hella competitive and usually dominated by Chinese or Russians
The Russians who tied in 2015 event finals are probably not going. Komova is not training due to back issues, and Spiridonova is a one event gymnast. Unfortunately for her, the Russian team lacks depth and may not be able to take someone who can only contribute on one event. Mustafina fell 2x on UB qualifications at Russian Cup, and once in AA finals.

I would take her over Kocian.
I would actually take them both. I think Simone, Aly, and Laurie have the other events covered. Bring 'em both and give us our best chance at a bars medal or two. I just don't see how Gabby would help the team now, no shots at individual medals. I don't think that will happen, I think Gabby being the Olympic champ will get her to Rio, but frankly, she's unnecessary and redundant. I like both Locklear and Kocian. Who it will be between the two seems like a bit of a toss up right now, they're both deserving
I felt like I was the only one thinking this way when the trio were filling out team spots during nationals lol. Gabby, without a solid amanar, is not as useful to the team as having both Ashton and Madison. I think Gabby makes Rio because of her being an AA gymnast... if someone were to get injured, she's a gymnast we can fall back on on any apparatus. Whereas if we had both Madison and Ashton, we'd be stretched pretty thin if injuries happen. But with no major upgrades from last year, Gabby's chances to medal on bars are minimal. She would medal in the AA if she hits but that's a big IF since she would have to get through quals to beat Laurie or Aly for that second AA spot. And then she would have to hit again during AA finals. Team USA could win more medals without her. 2 Team USA's that I'd choose: 1) Simone, Laurie, Aly, Ashton, Madison 2) Simone, Laurie, Aly, Mykayla, Ashton/Madison. I doubt Marta would pick the second scenario since Simone will most likely take vault gold, but it'd be nice to see Skinner in vault finals since she's been hitting her amanar.
I thought that too. I think Laurie, Madison, Ashton line up will probably pick up a couple of tenth's more on bars than a Laurie, Gabby, Madison/Ashton.

I'm not even a fan really of Skinner as a gymnast, but even I see that it would make more sense to take her than Gabby, simply due to how the puzzle of 3 people on each event is put together. But it would make most sense to take both Kocian and Locklear. My team would be Simone/Aly/Laurie/Ashton/Madison, with Gabby and McKayla as alternates, and maybe Maggie as the other alternate? She was so great, but still to be determined how much of her old skill level she can get back after the injury.
+GrantF from interviews with Martha it sounds as though she is taking Gabby. Shame as I totally agree with you and I would take MyKayla in her place as a solid vaulter and floor worker. She could medal in vault and has outscored Gabby on floor.

We don't really need another AA. We have Simone, Raismen, Gabby, and Laurie. We need someone who can hit bars and beam (but only if needed). Even if Madison goes she is only going to do bars. I think Ashton is better. She has excellent lines/body position.

I think Locklear was the better choice. She could do beam too if needed.
Madison was able to do ALL the events if needed, Ashton couldn’t. Madison also had a higher difficulty score and the potential for bars gold- Ashton was at most a bronze medal potential and nothing more. They made the right choice.
Personally, I would have picked Ashton over Madison to go to Rio but we'll never know now. Sorry, Ashton: if you were born in any other country, you might have an individual gold medal.
Based on Maddie's and Gabby's scores at Rio, Ashton could reach 16 with a "perfect" routine.
Joel K. she never would have beat the Russian, Ashton wont upgrade her skills. The only American who stood a shot at beating Russia on bars was Maddie.

Just as boring as Madison Kocian's routine which is a carbon copy of Russian and Chinese routines. Ashton's combinations make her routine stand out compared to all the girls she will face in Rio who will have the same routine as Kocian but are more exquisite.
