1911's are not "large for concealed carry". You need to be picky about holsters, but I daily carry a 5" 1911 with no issues and no more printing than my G19. The 1911 is very slim by design, and a single stack will conceal well. The butt of the gun is the hardest part to conceal, but get a holster with an FBI cant/adjustable cant and a good holster claw to keep it close to your side and you'll be fine.
It was popular back in the early competition days because it’s essentially a 9mm size bullet loaded really hot. It’s still popular in other countries that can’t have military caliber weapons. I wanted it because it shoots really flat out of a 1911 platform. Ammunition can be found online but you can get lucky in the store sometimes.
