for me, it varies very much... when I am working at home, I put 1 spray on my collar-bone.. if I am going for an outdoors event, I can go as much as 30 sprays if the fragrance is not performing very well.. the thing that can turn people off more than overspraying is using a fragrance inappropriate to the weather conditions.. I remember a few years ago, I went out on a hot summer night with some friends and put on Montblanc Individuel.. it smelled rotten and I had people tell me that I remember spraying too much once when I haven't wore Cavalli Silver Essence for some time and that's a good performer... I went with aroung 30 sprays and, if you were 10 ft from me, it smelled nice, if you were too close - you would choke that being said, I went with Shaghaf Oud by Swiss Arabian on a cold night and sprayed 10 time (and that's a beast)... I smelled great and people told me that.. so, to put it in a few words : mind 1) the fragrance 2) the occasion 3) the weather... if you want to smell good, you really have to know the fragrance that you are wearing and how hot/cold/humid/dry it is where you're goind OH.. one more thing.. it really pays off to have hydrated skin
I generally go with niches like 3-5 and designer 5-10 but depends on what niche and what designer and how hot or cold it is generally it's 3-5 on niche fragrances because they tend to be stronger and 5-10 maybe even more and on some less.
Best solution for weak performing perfumes is ... SELL IT! No over spraying will give you beast performance even if you take a shower with it. It'll have strong opening,little longer and than it's gone. So many great performing frags out there! For examp some of Histoires de Parfums perform awesome for ok $.

I know some people smell nice , and others im chewing on it.
in some county its unethical if you wear an atomic bomb performing parfum
