  • Porsche 911 G series, lets step back from today's modern sports car offerings and into this Porsche classic where we will engage with an old life force, an old life force that is that Porsche DNA.
This is an insight which might just make us head over to the classic car adverts to imagine swapping out of our modern and convenient, performance cars and into something potentially life changing.
Big thank you to Mark Dempsey for loaning this beautiful car

Dear Roger thank you for this journey back in automotive history. As with you, this era of the 911 was my first and indelible reference point of all sports cars. A pre-G50 Carrera Sport from 1985 was my first experience of a Porsche, courtesy of a client who had paid a shade over £19,600 for a brand new glowing example in Guards Red. While the latter remains on the options catalogue, the range of paint schemes back then was really quite iconic and it is an absolute joy to be able to see these from time to time.
Special tribute too to your timed length of your visual offering which will forever place you in any hall of fame of Porsche video clips!!

What a fantastic addition to Roger’s on-going catalog of 911’s of all types!
As these older cars become rarer, the unusual colours really do stand out and what a gem this is!
I’d love to know who the first owner was who specified this colour with the sport pack, they really knew what they wanted! I bet there weren’t many, if any others, made like this.
Great vid Rog! Great car Mark, look forward to driving with you guys again when we’re all jabbed up! Justin 👍

I'm lucky enough to have driven this car - and it's a top quality machine - lots of fun. Great colour (and looks great on a Jazz :) :) :) ) and very original - which is great to see. I keep telling the owner to stick a sportier exhaust on it - so we can hear that glorious engine sing but perhaps he's right to keep it stock. Anyhows, fantastic car and a top owner too.

Never had one of the older 911's, but did have a 964 Carrera 4 back in the 1990s. Currently running a 1996 993 Carrera and loving it! Also had a couple of 928s, 1990 S4 and a 1993 GTS. Different strokes for different folks I guess. Also had a 1986 944 Lux and a 1990 944S2. Done a few Boxsters, 1999 and 2002 986 along with a 2007 987. Done the Ferrari thing with 2 328GTBs, a 360 Modena and an F355 Berlinetta. I know I am a very lucky boy!! My wife might disagree.....Still, she loves her Skoda Fabia estate.....happy wife, happy life. Cheers from a (rather wet) Otford, Kent.

Not to be a stickler but model year G was 1986, H was model year 1987. H was the first year to have the G-50 gear box. I have owned a 1987 since about 2004. Back then nobody seemed to be very interested in them, and purchased mine with less than 100K on the odometer for 13K USD. I remember the teller at the credit union thinking I was mad for paying so much for a used car. Clearly she knew nothing about them. It was my daily driver in the summer for many years.
As long as I have owned it, it is a car that never lets you forget you are driving something special. It is quirky and demanding but also very rewarding. Your face hurts from the smile it gives you when you finally reach your destination. The build quality is like nothing else I have ever owned. I thought I was in for terrible repair bills when I bought it, but they are remarkably reliable.

I'm still shocked that you've only got some 10k subs! You're Porsche knowledge is epic and the videos (Including it's production.) you produce are Porsche in their quality. ;-))...
Now! Regarding the buying of an old Porsche. There is one huge caveat, to say the least. Old Porsches are a money drain and will ruin your bank account. That is often a quote that is heard with regard to this brand. Especially if you're like me and you're mechanical know how is very basic and you're knowledge of early Porsches limited to model numbers, but not series numbers. i.e. I can do 911, 924, 944, 928, but true Porsche followers will always come up with the "other" numbers, like with the latest 911, the 992. That is my series numbers for Porsche used up, bar 991!!
That aside, it's always great to see and hear old cars still running about. That is something that will never get old :-))...
Great video Mr. B. Lovely old 911, but, personally, not one for me. ;-))...
    Your No1 Stalker.

Excellent video Roger, you’ve done a great job at communicating the character of the G series Porsches. I agree with you that older Porsches are much more satisfying to drive than modern cars, with one exception - climate control. If one is willing to accept driving in a limited window of temperate weather; then yes, the exhilaration of their visceral experience is unmatched.

Firstly Roger, let me say how great and informative your reviews are with great narrative and photography.
Your enthusiasm really shines through and makes for great viewing. Thank you!
As someone who is contemplating Porsche ownership (718/911) could it be possible for you to produce a review that considers the world of Porsche options?
I read reams and reams on what one should specify to make a good Porsche and it leaves me a bit puzzled whether it's just personal preference or what the salesman wants to push on to you at obviously great cost!
I would value your experience in such matters to be able to specify a car that gives the true Porsche experience without some unnecessary expense because it seems the skies the limit when it comes to these cars.
    Regards.

    • @RogerBaileyOnCars
      @RogerBaileyOnCars  3 года назад

Thanks ! its a good idea you have, I'll give it some thought. I believe most options are un necessary for most owners, trick suspension, ceramic brakes, fancy headlights etc do little to enhance the experience, and of course dealers have option sales targets to meet.

Good video, good car. I own a 1988 Carrera. Nostalgia is one thing, but you have really got to like the genre. I know people who have never owned a 911 and want one. But don't let the fact that they are all called 911. Air cooled like these are a world away from current 992's or even the 996. So as you say, do your homework! Air cooled can be a shock, if in your heart you are a modern sports car person.
