Stephen Boyd was so handsome and very talented. He also possessed a very commanding voice and stage presence. It’s a shame that his career never really materialized after his triumph as the villainous Masala.
He died way too young and it's really unfair, he was great in Fantastic Voyage from 1966 too !!!!!
Stephen Boyd was so underrated
Stephen Boyd was a very talented and handsome actor. Particularly. His voice was very impressive to me. He was from Irish. He died a heart attack at 45. Too young to die. It was a tragic death.
I saw this at Radio City Music Hall during the 1962 Christmas season, and this was the first time I heard some of the fine songs of Rodgers and Hart--you know--before Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Stephen Boyd was an incredibly talented actor. Who else could go from BenHur to Jumbo? No one, Heston as best actor? Seriously, no. Stephen Boyd stole the entire movie. For me, after the death of Messala, the film ended. Forever in my heart, the very, very talented and very, very handsome Stephen Boyd.
What a disservice to deny him even a nomination for his powerful performance as the villainous Masala. Especially after the tragic chariot race. His gut wrenching performance as he gasped for his last breath. After being mangled under the chariots was worthy of an Academy Award!

What a horrible loss, Boyd was an expert entertainer and fabulous and handsome as well, class act!!!!!
My favorite moment of the film is at 7:19, almost the very end, when "Sawdust" seamlessly turns into "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and the cast is now dressed for a double wedding, waltzing around Jumbo, and then taking a curtain call like you would at the end of a stage musical. Singularly gorgeous.
Nothing has ever been like this since and probably never will again Either!!!!!

The ending is absolutely fantastic. The music the acting and the players throughout the entire film are first class and this underrated motion picture was really better than most people originally thought!
It got mixed reviews, but in my humble opinion it was magical. Still is.

Although he is not credited for this, and although I admire Director Chuck Walters work in many films, we must acknowledge that the great Busby Berkeley was second unit director for this film (shared with two others) and also was the choreographer for the musical numbers, which, in my opinion (this being a Musical) are the highlights of this movie.
