I'm so used to Leftist propaganda in movies I kept expecting the father to do something reckless or stupid and screw up in a way the mother would have to fix it, but it never happened! The scene near the end where he sacrificed himself to save his family impressed me so much. So rare to see anything like that come out of Hollywood these days. Just watched the sequel last night and Cillian Murphy does a great job as the new male lead, but in a very different way. Without spoiling too much, his character is basically a scumbag at the start of the movie. The cast get split up and most of the movie is him and the little deaf girl forced to work together. A lot more focus on Redemption in the sequel.
Yeah when John Krasinki's character sacrifices himself, but not before reassuring his daughter that he has always loved her was so good to see and yet really sad at the same time! The sad being that the father had to sacrifice himself to give his kids a chance to stay alive and the good being that he made sure his daughter got the closure she needed before his passing. Had he just screamed to save them, the daughter would have constantly had doubts about the extent of her fathers love for her because she blamed herself for being the cause of her younger brother's death and that was why her father came off distant to her since. With that closure, the daughter got that reassurance so she could not be locked up about her past actions and try to focus on her and the family's future!
One part where it'd be cool to hear you go a little deeper is on the relationship between the daughter and the father. She is ridden with guilt over causing the death of her brother and believes that her father doesn't love her because of this. I think that's part of what makes the Father sacrifice so important

It’s just nice to see a loving family for once. A loving husband and wife who love their children deeply as well and are willing to sacrifice for each other. You just don’t see that much in movies or tv shows and it starts to wear you down after a bit (and sometimes you don’t even notice it’s wearing you down until you watch a movie with a loving family and you find yourself surprised)
Great insight Bishop Barron, and thanks for positing. I disagree with some of the negative comments. Today, in order for a movie with Christian values to progress, it can't be overt about its message. It still has to work as a commercial and popular story regardless of any such message. After all Jesus had to use parables in his day, as the 'public' were unable to understand the message otherwise. Krasinski, even if a non-practicing Catholic (& he may be), would still have had such values imbued in him. Or, he may have come across the story elsewhere and adopted it? Regardless, in today's very Christianophobic climate, I think I'll take whatever comes along, even if not overtly Christian. Unselfish love, self-control, and self-sacrifice, are still great values to promote regardless.

This kind of story telling needs to be adopte more by Christians if they wish to bring society back to Christianity, and like it or not, popular culture is the influential force today iin changing people's minds, particularly television. Wanna make a real change? Go into entertainment.
Absolutely. I saw the film last night and loved the subtle pro-life and self-sacrificial themes throughout. It's beautiful to see how our rich Catholic tradition has effected the culture, even in what I'd call a modern silent thriller. Just beautiful

I noticed that too when I watched it. SPECIALLY that moment his wife says: "Who are we if we can't protect them", but I didn't know Krasinski was catholic. Now I love John Krasinski more than before.

The theme is that when we are reduced to basic survival, the Family is essential: the idea of family is intrinsic to the true nature of mankind ('people-kind' if PM Trudeau is reading). In this day in age, when we are far-removed from basic survival rituals, the importance of family is not only often trivialized but often demonized as a product of a "independence/pleasure-suppressing" past. Our privileged-present makes it difficult to understand our essence as a part of something larger, rather we easily feel as though operating as freely independent units; the former mentality is fertile-ground for self-sacrafice... i could expound, and probably should, but I don't want to write a novella here... As an aside, so-called SJW's were offended by the dinner-table-prayer scene. Interesting times!

I'll admit even I was questioning why they didn't just abort the baby. It's the wrong thing to do for sure, but if there were ever an excuse, that'd be it. And I'm as pro life as can be. This movie just knows how to twist me emotionally. And that's a sign of great filmmaking. Challenge the audience. That's why this movie is so powerful. These parents love ALL their children so potently that they're willing to give their lives for them. Ugh. Makes me want to learn ASL too.
How do we know that John Krasinski is a devout Catholic? I know he was raised Catholic, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that he still practices. All that said, thank you Bishop Barron! I merely meant that movies with "progressive" themes (Her, Moonlight etc.) tend to be the most widely praised. By heartbreaking, I was referring to the ending of the movie and its biblical allusions. I'm overjoyed that a movie like this is getting so much attention.
Todd Fundgren My interpretation was that Her was suggesting that polygamy didn’t compromise love (Scarlet Johansson has previously described monogamy as “unnatural”) and Moonlight highlights the danger of repressing “who you really are”. I wonder what Robert Barron’s take on Her is.

I am still wanting to see the movie, but was a little surprised and disappointed he spoiled such significant moments in this (worthy and excellent) review.
Your Excellency, very good observation of the Christus Victor theme. Having grown up in Protestant circles, about the only Atonement view I'd ever encountered was Penal Substitution. I only found out several months ago about Christus Victor--the historical, patristic, classical view. My $0.02, while PS may be an effective motif for moving folks who just had the Hell scared out of them through good ol' fire and brimstone to make a "personal decision for Christ", it seems that CV is a much richer view that better covers the "full meaning" of the cross (at least, as much as frail human hearts and minds can grasp), and is probably the best view for promoting ecumenical unity (as it seems many "competing" views of the atonement, including PS, are actually largely encompassed by CV).
Bishop' you use the term "devour" a few times in your review -as written on the family's board "why don't they eat their kill' (the creatures destroy but do not devour) -sorry to be pedantic but it is there .....
I enjoyed the film the 2nd time i watched it. Haven't seen part 2 yet. I liked the tension, hand on mouth scenes like the nail on the stairs. I've seen many horror movies with lots of blood and gore but this one was good in portraying frightening moments without all that thrown in. I didn't really see any religious aspects to be honest. Whether consciously or subconsciously the director was showing us that is really left up to the viewer i guess but in an interview the director simply pointed out that the film was about parenthood and that could mean anyone, whether religious or not. Some guy from New Yorker magazine saw it as being political ( about the silent white majority) for some reason. Guess ppl see things, read into things as they want to or for whatever reason they have.
One of My favorite movie - family oriented, thriller, with a touch of science and religion. It's a must see movie... but I have not seen the sequel yet.

You must do a commentary on "This is America" by Childish Gambino. It could take days to unpack all of the symbolism, but it's the most important piece of performance art in recent history.
lateworm there is not much to say from it. It's a superhero movie with all its tropes. The villain is basically an eugenist/abortionist...so it makes sense that he would be the villain The heroes kind of have this rule of "we don't change lives" but they don't adhere to it so well, and it is not always clearly if they are getting the consequences of not following this rule...so that is kind of bad and confusing, morally speaking... I think that is about it...
Just one point about the silence in the film. The silence to me (for me) does not lead to God, it actually detracts and further separates me from him if he is there. When there's no one left to talk to but God and he does not answer, you know know its over for you. P.S. I can never understand Go'ds morals and our own somehow being in tandem ( I struggle with mine), If God can take a life away, even one at the point of conception, when an egg is fertilised but the fetus dies within weeks i don't see why he would allow that to happen..Better he prevent it happening in the first place if you want to exclude him too from causing abortion. I guess its another of those mysteries.
Maybe He answers us in ways we don't expect-not through a feeling of consolation or a clear sign. I've felt frustrated with God many times. That's good, wrestle with Him. Your struggles, fears, not even death, is an obstacle to God.
Technically, their only known weakness was the extremely high-pitched sound waves that disoriented the monsters and made them open up their ear cavities even wider. The movies explicitly establishes that they are only vulnerable to normal firearms when their hearing cavities and eardrums are exposed, because their outer shell is pretty much bulletproof. And even when the mother was able to blow the monster’s brains out, the gunshot immediately attracted all the other monsters in the immediate area over to the house, making that only viable as a desperate last resort to buy time. If the parents tried fighting them with the shotgun before that weakness was discovered, then it would have been even worse, since it also probably would not have even killed the one attacking them (or supposing the gun could still at least hurt them, it would still take more time and shots to bring one down, causing the family to run out of ammo faster as the rest of the monsters come to slaughter them).
saw this last weekend and super enjoyed it. Except for the abortion connection (I think the movie was very pro-life) and the sacrifice of the father, a lot of the imagery/their name etc. was lost on me and now I have to see again. Love his commentary on films. Thank you!
Bishop Barron didn't find an overarching theme of the movie. I think however, that salvation history can be told through this movie, not perfectly but I think it works. The initial sin in the family was when the deaf daughter handed over the rocket to the boy, the boy compounds the problem by taking the batteries. I think this mirrors Eve handing the fruit to Adam, and Adam engaging in scapegoating. At the end the solution to evil is the sacrifice of the Father who then hands off to finish the mission to his spouse. I think this mirrors the sacrifice of Christ, as Bishop Barron said, and then the giving of the Holy Spirit to his spouse, the Church.

I'd guess that a pretty substantial portion of "man vs outside force" films could be thought of in terms of the Christian Fall/Redemption narrative (eg, Independence Day, our "sin" was not having the technological prowess of the invading aliens, which nearly led to the death--ie, "damnation"--of mankind. But the "Christ figures" overcame our "poor technological nature" by altruistic self-sacrifice, for the "redemption" of the "church" of humanity).
Minor Point: The monsters didn't devour their kill; It seems the people were simply destroyed because the sounds disturbed the monsters. Not unlike what happens today when people make a little noise in the earshot of our modern day monsters. Don't make any noise or you'll be destroyed.

Excuse me Bishop, I know this is a little off topic, but this is a very pressing question that I have. I am interested in the film industry myself, and I see that you have really liked characters that are, in a sense, quite profane and crude such as jack Nicholson in cuckoo's nest and Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. I understand that some of the messages and morals in the story are beautiful ones, but not all of them are, and some have told me that the portrayal of characters cursing and sinning, even in potentially venial ways, could be sinful in itself. So, I just wanted to ask for your opinion on this. Do you think that in the end, the writers and directors of films such as the ones I have mentioned will be held responsible for portraying these sinful characters in positive or indifferent lights, even if the overall message of the story is not necessarily promoting these characters solely because of their personalities?
I think you have to distinguish between a moral act and the dramatic portrayal of a moral act. The latter can be acceptable as long as it contributes to the overall aesthetic quality of a drama. I mean, would you condemn Kenneth Branagh because he portrayed Hamlet, who murdered Polonius? Would you condemn Gary Oldmann, because he portrayed Lee Harvey Oswald? And keep in mind that the Bible is filled with accounts of all sorts of human depravity. The presentation of sin within a literary or dramatic context is by no means the same thing as promoting sin.

As of 2003 partial birth abortion is illegal in the USA. Furthermore, certain states are making it impossible for abortion clinics to function even though Roe vs Wade is in place. Therefore, everything is going your way in the USA regarding abortion Bishop so don't complain too much. Indeed abortion may become illegal one day throughout the USA. What does that mean? Backstreet abortions and hospitals burdened with women who have been mutilated or suffering from septicaemia. With all due respect, Your Excellency, I don't see the uniquely Christian themes. I'm not sure that the name "Abbott" has any significance. And while they have to live in a silence that is similar to monastic life, it's not out of sacrifice to something greater, but out of a survival instinct. I agree about the lengths they go to to save the child, and I agree that this provides a counterpoint about how families still value children despite the pain and sorrow in this world. I think the connection to the book of Revelation is tenuous at best. The scene was designed to build tension, and I suspect any similarity to Revelation is accidental. The self-sacrifice of the father is a common human theme and isn't uniquely Christian, although it is also a strong Christian theme. Is Krasinski still practicing? I knew that he was raised Catholic, but that alone doesn't show that these scenes/themes are operative as Christian themes.

My brothers and I are non practitioner Catholics. Well I am back to my church so I am now. But the point is that even though we weren't fully practicing the Catholic faith I feel like we always unconsciously had it in the back of our heads. It's how we were raised and our parents are faithful Catholics so I think our life's have been a manifestation of the faith and love. But anyway I hope this movie does have a positive message. I really enjoyed it. And I'm so joyful to be back home ❤️ Listening to Bishop Barron has widened my understanding of the church.
I think the movie has a positive message as well. I also agree that subconscious influence can still be seen in non-practicing Catholics. I just am not convinced that the movie's themes are uniquely Christian as opposed to positive universal human themes about family. I watched the interview, and I think it underscores my point. Traditional family values (particularly family sticking together and protecting each other) are not uniquely Christian, as you have similar values/themes in Confucian philosophy, Nordic pagan cultures, many tribal cultures, etc. Christianity strengthened and purified these values/themes, but I'm not sure that Christianity's unique contributions are showcased in A Quiet Place per se. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if there was a Venn diagram, this movie would fall into the intersection between the Christian circle and the universal traditional human circle.
I don't think Bishop Barron is out looking for nominally Catholic movies or claiming this one is, but as the word Catholic makes clear (roughly translated as "universal"), he is picking up on those themes and values that properly belong to God (whose Body is the Catholic Church).
"Bible-Believer" is a term denoting certain Evangelical Protestants who disregard anything not in the Bible as Heresy, Jack Chick being one such Bible-Believer. I, for the record, share in Bishop Barron's _Catholic_ faith.

Bishop Barron, with all due respect, I wish you could focus your time on what's really happening in the world. The world is so divided now between Democrat or Republican, Conservative or Liberal, left or right, straight or gay, good or evil. There are evil people ruling this world as the Bible tells us and they are trying really hard to mess it up and for the most part succeeding. We need spiritual guidance and truth more now than ever.

The theme is that when we are reduced to basic survival, the Family is essential: the idea of family is intrinsic to the true nature of mankind ('people-kind' if PM Trudeau is reading). In this day in age, when we are far-removed from basic survival rituals, the importance of family is not only often trivialized but often demonized as a product of a "independence/pleasure-suppressing" past. Our privileged-present makes it difficult to understand our essence as a part of something larger, rather we easily feel as though operating as freely independent units; the former mentality is fertile-ground for self-sacrafice... i could expound, and probably should, but I don't want to write a novella here...
As an aside, so-called SJW's were offended by the dinner-table-prayer scene. Interesting times!

I'll admit even I was questioning why they didn't just abort the baby. It's the wrong thing to do for sure, but if there were ever an excuse, that'd be it. And I'm as pro life as can be. This movie just knows how to twist me emotionally. And that's a sign of great filmmaking. Challenge the audience.
That's why this movie is so powerful. These parents love ALL their children so potently that they're willing to give their lives for them. Ugh. Makes me want to learn ASL too.

I’m shocked by just how conservative this movie sounds, particularly given how much praise it has gotten. It sounds downright heartbreaking.
I merely meant that movies with "progressive" themes (Her, Moonlight etc.) tend to be the most widely praised. By heartbreaking, I was referring to the ending of the movie and its biblical allusions. I'm overjoyed that a movie like this is getting so much attention.

Your Excellency, very good observation of the Christus Victor theme. Having grown up in Protestant circles, about the only Atonement view I'd ever encountered was Penal Substitution. I only found out several months ago about Christus Victor--the historical, patristic, classical view. My $0.02, while PS may be an effective motif for moving folks who just had the Hell scared out of them through good ol' fire and brimstone to make a "personal decision for Christ", it seems that CV is a much richer view that better covers the "full meaning" of the cross (at least, as much as frail human hearts and minds can grasp), and is probably the best view for promoting ecumenical unity (as it seems many "competing" views of the atonement, including PS, are actually largely encompassed by CV).

I enjoyed the film the 2nd time i watched it. Haven't seen part 2 yet. I liked the tension, hand on mouth scenes like the nail on the stairs. I've seen many horror movies with lots of blood and gore but this one was good in portraying frightening moments without all that thrown in. I didn't really see any religious aspects to be honest. Whether consciously or subconsciously the director was showing us that is really left up to the viewer i guess but in an interview the director simply pointed out that the film was about parenthood and that could mean anyone, whether religious or not. Some guy from New Yorker magazine saw it as being political ( about the silent white majority) for some reason. Guess ppl see things, read into things as they want to or for whatever reason they have.

The heroes kind of have this rule of "we don't change lives" but they don't adhere to it so well, and it is not always clearly if they are getting the consequences of not following this rule...so that is kind of bad and confusing, morally speaking...

Just one point about the silence in the film. The silence to me (for me) does not lead to God, it actually detracts and further separates me from him if he is there. When there's no one left to talk to but God and he does not answer, you know know its over for you. P.S. I can never understand Go'ds morals and our own somehow being in tandem ( I struggle with mine), If God can take a life away, even one at the point of conception, when an egg is fertilised but the fetus dies within weeks i don't see why he would allow that to happen..Better he prevent it happening in the first place if you want to exclude him too from causing abortion. I guess its another of those mysteries.
Maybe He answers us in ways we don't expect-not through a feeling of consolation or a clear sign.

i love the values of the movie, still i was bit underwhelmed that the monsters ultimate weakness were shotgun slugs.
Technically, their only known weakness was the extremely high-pitched sound waves that disoriented the monsters and made them open up their ear cavities even wider. The movies explicitly establishes that they are only vulnerable to normal firearms when their hearing cavities and eardrums are exposed, because their outer shell is pretty much bulletproof.
And even when the mother was able to blow the monster’s brains out, the gunshot immediately attracted all the other monsters in the immediate area over to the house, making that only viable as a desperate last resort to buy time. If the parents tried fighting them with the shotgun before that weakness was discovered, then it would have been even worse, since it also probably would not have even killed the one attacking them (or supposing the gun could still at least hurt them, it would still take more time and shots to bring one down, causing the family to run out of ammo faster as the rest of the monsters come to slaughter them).

saw this last weekend and super enjoyed it. Except for the abortion connection (I think the movie was very pro-life) and the sacrifice of the father, a lot of the imagery/their name etc. was lost on me and now I have to see again. Love his commentary on films. Thank you!
Bishop Barron didn't find an overarching theme of the movie. I think however, that salvation history can be told through this movie, not perfectly but I think it works. The initial sin in the family was when the deaf daughter handed over the rocket to the boy, the boy compounds the problem by taking the batteries. I think this mirrors Eve handing the fruit to Adam, and Adam engaging in scapegoating. At the end the solution to evil is the sacrifice of the Father who then hands off to finish the mission to his spouse. I think this mirrors the sacrifice of Christ, as Bishop Barron said, and then the giving of the Holy Spirit to his spouse, the Church.

I'd guess that a pretty substantial portion of "man vs outside force" films could be thought of in terms of the Christian Fall/Redemption narrative (eg, Independence Day, our "sin" was not having the technological prowess of the invading aliens, which nearly led to the death--ie, "damnation"--of mankind. But the "Christ figures" overcame our "poor technological nature" by altruistic self-sacrifice, for the "redemption" of the "church" of humanity).
Minor Point: The monsters didn't devour their kill; It seems the people were simply destroyed because the sounds disturbed the monsters. Not unlike what happens today when people make a little noise in the earshot of our modern day monsters. Don't make any noise or you'll be destroyed.

Excuse me Bishop, I know this is a little off topic, but this is a very pressing question that I have. I am interested in the film industry myself, and I see that you have really liked characters that are, in a sense, quite profane and crude such as jack Nicholson in cuckoo's nest and Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino. I understand that some of the messages and morals in the story are beautiful ones, but not all of them are, and some have told me that the portrayal of characters cursing and sinning, even in potentially venial ways, could be sinful in itself. So, I just wanted to ask for your opinion on this. Do you think that in the end, the writers and directors of films such as the ones I have mentioned will be held responsible for portraying these sinful characters in positive or indifferent lights, even if the overall message of the story is not necessarily promoting these characters solely because of their personalities?
I think you have to distinguish between a moral act and the dramatic portrayal of a moral act. The latter can be acceptable as long as it contributes to the overall aesthetic quality of a drama. I mean, would you condemn Kenneth Branagh because he portrayed Hamlet, who murdered Polonius? Would you condemn Gary Oldmann, because he portrayed Lee Harvey Oswald? And keep in mind that the Bible is filled with accounts of all sorts of human depravity. The presentation of sin within a literary or dramatic context is by no means the same thing as promoting sin.

Backstreet abortions and hospitals burdened with women who have been mutilated or suffering from septicaemia. With all due respect, Your Excellency, I don't see the uniquely Christian themes. I'm not sure that the name "Abbott" has any significance. And while they have to live in a silence that is similar to monastic life, it's not out of sacrifice to something greater, but out of a survival instinct.
I agree about the lengths they go to to save the child, and I agree that this provides a counterpoint about how families still value children despite the pain and sorrow in this world.
I think the connection to the book of Revelation is tenuous at best. The scene was designed to build tension, and I suspect any similarity to Revelation is accidental.
The self-sacrifice of the father is a common human theme and isn't uniquely Christian, although it is also a strong Christian theme.
Is Krasinski still practicing? I knew that he was raised Catholic, but that alone doesn't show that these scenes/themes are operative as Christian themes.

If you watch this interview at one point he talks about his reasoning for the quiet place. I think the Christian theme is definitely manifested in the movie. Maybe unconsciously, maybe that wasn't his full intent but God works in mysterious ways through unexpected people.
My brothers and I are non practitioner Catholics. Well I am back to my church so I am now. But the point is that even though we weren't fully practicing the Catholic faith I feel like we always unconsciously had it in the back of our heads. It's how we were raised and our parents are faithful Catholics so I think our life's have been a manifestation of the faith and love.
But anyway I hope this movie does have a positive message. I really enjoyed it.

I think the movie has a positive message as well. I also agree that subconscious influence can still be seen in non-practicing Catholics. I just am not convinced that the movie's themes are uniquely Christian as opposed to positive universal human themes about family.
I watched the interview, and I think it underscores my point. Traditional family values (particularly family sticking together and protecting each other) are not uniquely Christian, as you have similar values/themes in Confucian philosophy, Nordic pagan cultures, many tribal cultures, etc. Christianity strengthened and purified these values/themes, but I'm not sure that Christianity's unique contributions are showcased in A Quiet Place per se. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if there was a Venn diagram, this movie would fall into the intersection between the Christian circle and the universal traditional human circle.
I don't think Bishop Barron is out looking for nominally Catholic movies or claiming this one is, but as the word Catholic makes clear (roughly translated as "universal"), he is picking up on those themes and values that properly belong to God (whose Body is the Catholic Church).
