    I agree, Bishop Barron. It really struck me at the end when she walked into the church. The love of God overwhelms her and she connects spiritually and then wants to reconnect with her mother. Excellent movie.

    I have found that quite often works of fiction that have nothing to do with religion have very, very strong religious undertones, or can even have good lessons for people of religion. Glad you saw that in "Lady Bird," will add it to my to watch list.

    Seeing this movie was one of those rare movies where the lives of women and their relationships with each other were laid bare. Having been both the mom and the daughter at points in my life, I found it highly relatable. I also could relate to being a non-Catholic in a Catholic high school. It was probably two of the best years of my life. No school had ever treated me with such care and respect.

    I believe she has converted in the end to Catholicism. When she asked that edgy new yorker hipster if he believed in God or not, and he answers it's ridiculuous, she asks his name and says that she couldn't tell why people don't believe in God but they use their parents given name. Then, she presents herself as Christine, not as Lady Bird.
    I guess this movie is really conservative in some ways. I've never been to America, but when I left the cinema, I preferred to live in Sacramento than NYC. I still do.

    Hey Bishop Barron! So great to see this review here, man. I really loved this film. The actor that played the older black priest that is also the drama coach-Stephen McKinley Henderson-was one of my acting professors at SUNY Buffalo and remains a friend today. I reached out to him after I saw this several years ago and shared how moved I was by his performance. He is not Roman Catholic, but has a strong faith in God. And it shows!
    I think you are so right to show how God's light permeates through art. Even in these secular, kinda hostile times-His light shines. As Greta's story shows. May this continue, God willing. I choose to be a part of that as an actor and artist myself. Thanks for being here, JV Johnny 😀 ⚾

    Great video, Bishop, I've been waiting for this. I think you missed something though: at the end of the movie, she doesn't want to be called LadyBird, she wants to be called by her Christian name, CHRISTene. I don't think her acceptance of a name like that is just an accident, I think that signifies her acceptance of God and becoming a Christian.

    So often is there a huge discrepancy in volume between the intro, the Bishop, and the outro where as I have to turn the player's volume all the way up, then somewhat more with my computer's volume. Then the outro blares out of my speakers -- it's very off putting and, while I'm interested contextually, this has deterred me from this series many times. Keep up the good work! =D

      I really liked that scene. I'm very pro-life, but I often find pro-lifers come off as insincere and inauthentic. No fault of our own really. We are constantly being attacked and separating ourselves emotionally feels safe. This is why in my pro-life activism, I try to spend more time getting to know the person I'm speaking to so I can make a genuine connection with them and be more open and authentic.
      Although the pro-lifer seemed inauthentic, you can't deny her story was compelling and Ladybird's mockery was rude at best. I liked that the movie didn't take a stance on the issue, but showed the ridiculousness of those on both sides.

    The 'deep truth' I think is that life is absurd. In adolescence we live the absurdity. The wisdom is in embracing it as an acceptance of human inadequacy. Lady Bird captures that, if you have the sense, you understand that everything stays ineffable and let it go. Which is where art comes in. Wise adults lay it all between the lines. Language can't capture meaning. So there's that bond between kids and parents when the kids realize their parents aren't the authority. They themselves are submitting to an authority and if the kid can come up with something better then great, because none of us owns it or possesses it. We're all in it together. Parents are faking it, and that's cool. Parents that are true believers are the problem. The literalists.
    They're coming from a point of fear and insecurity. I always think of Rushmore, which I love, when I think of Lady Bird. Growing up and growing down at the same time. The kids breaking through at times but also the adults, reconnecting with those earlier layers of themselves, which is not arrestedness. Like any good art good personality development has layers. Everything we've been is still inside us and we can access it, which is beautiful, but we can't be it. If we've grown up we've let that go.
    Geeks sometimes suck at this, to generalize, because they're prone to an attachment to unreality -- the land of Plato's forms to which they feel they have access. Fine, but you can't live there. It's utopian, and so merciless, to make a distinction the Bishop made about True Grit. Merciless and humorless. Because humor, and a sense of the incongruity of everything, is also an expression of inadequacy and human limitation. As is the embarrassment and humiliation of adolescence, to speak for my own, at any rate. Everything comes to rest in paradox, if it's to come to rest at all.

    one thing I love about Catholic fiction (as opposed to Protestant fiction) is that the characters are always complex/conflicted, and the plots tend to weave in ways to see God in even the most mundane matters. in contrast, Protestant fiction characters are always either wholly white or wholly black, God is *never* present in mundane human affairs (on the contrary, the mundane elements tend to only be used to show us the various ways we're incurring Divine Wrath), and the plots are usually infused with an "us against them" type of paranoia. for an extreme example of the differences, simply compare "God's Not Dead" with "The Exorcist".

    • @MagnificentFiend
      @MagnificentFiend 6 лет назад +1

      _God's Not Dead_ is no more typical of Protestant fiction than a rouged, simpering Jesus figurine is typical of Catholic art.

    • @wayneanddonita3857
      @wayneanddonita3857 6 лет назад

      ^I'm talking about films that have held mainstream popularity. There haven't been many such Protestant films in the past few decades or so, but most of the ones I've seen have tried to be as overtly unambiguous as possible. "The Witch" (2015) was decent, but probably not too many Protestants would "claim" it.

    • @wayneanddonita3857
      @wayneanddonita3857 6 лет назад

      also, even though "The Witch" had very "real" characters, the basic idea was that a puritan protestant family refused to submit to the existing trained religious clergy and authorities (surprise, surprise), and so they broke off from their church, went alone into the wilderness, and became overrun by the devil...so, yeah, no, probably not a protestant "crowd pleaser" there ;-)

    • @wayneanddonita3857
      @wayneanddonita3857 6 лет назад +1

      tim spangler...welp, after coming to terms with the heartbreaking fact that the worst protestant fiction ever was the doctrine written by the reformers, I do, indeed, feel relatively few qualms about critiquing modern protestant movies...

    Definitely have to see this movie now.So in a sense the movie is about the director's life.Meaning by Greta going to an all girls school she was exposed to the catholic faith even though she never practise the faith. Yes God can make apple pie out of bruised apples.
    We pray that catholics who strayed from their faith will return.Many Catholics have what we call a second conversion.That is sometimes it takes a tragedy in their own lives to come back.A huge job loss; a divorce whatever the circumstance is.A time of reflection.Just the way Ladybird started to reflect her relationship with her mother after being in a bad situation.Amazingly that God is always reaching out to us when we are not reaching out to him which is grace.

    • @bobpolo2964
      @bobpolo2964 6 лет назад +1

      Good question. The title "God" can have several meanings. In this case, Jesus is called God because He is uncreated and eternal, like His Father. So, the one true God is Father, Son, Spirit because they each share common traits: uncreated and eternal, perfect harmony. Basically, they share the same office with distinct titles.
      The eternal Son was praying to His eternal Father. Hope that helps

    • @sarahapple4427
      @sarahapple4427 6 лет назад

      bob polo oh! So they're both eternal. So they're both God, but different people?

    • @bobpolo2964
      @bobpolo2964 6 лет назад

      It's better to say "distinct persons" rather than different people. The term "different" suggests some type of detachment, and God can't be detached from Himself. (2Timothy 2:13)
      Here's a decent analogy, but it still falls short. Sarah has a mother and a father, which means each of you make one family, right? 3 family members, one family. Sarah is not her mother; your mother is not your father. 3 family members with 3 distinctions - Father, mother, daughter - one family
      best I can do lol

    • @sarahapple4427
      @sarahapple4427 6 лет назад

      bob polo okay, I get it now! So would the holy spirt be consider as God too? And if I were to go to heaven right now, would I see 2 people (the father and Jesus)

    • @bobpolo2964
      @bobpolo2964 6 лет назад +2

      sarah - Great questions. Father, Son, Spirit is the one true God, so yes, the Spirit is the Lord as well.
      But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. 2Corinthians 3:16-18
      The Spirit is "who" unites us to the Father through Jesus Christ, His beloved Son. This is what baptism symbolizes: that we died with the Messiah, leaving behind sin and death; and we rose with the Messiah to new life unto God.

    Very interesting points but I have to disagree on a couple of notes. The way ladybird was written you really didn't care about her supposed plights or her inner conflict. She was just a generic teenager who wanted to go a certain school and had her moments of conflicted identity when she was hanging with the popular kids. And even then the popular kids weren't cool with her because she lied to them about how rich she was. Then all of a sudden we're supposed to care about her religious 'epiphany' when the movie gave no indication as to what her opinion on God was in the first place. Another point I might add is the time period in which this is set: One year after 9/11. After it ended I would have loved to have seen ladybird giving an opinion on those attacks and the connection she has with God. That was a very strange time to be coming of age especially as a Catholic or a Christian and that would have made a ladybird a more relatable character.

Don't watch any movies from hollywood as thre are always hidden evil agendas that warp your mind from real truth and Jesus, and try to neutralize worldly sin. You would have to have tremendous faith to do so. Do what Jesus would do. He wouldn't be caught giving movie review advice about a Hollywood film. And I would be embarrassed to even ask Him to. I'm sure you have better things to do with your time and talents. Now let's turn to movie critic, Ebert, for some spiritual advisement, I guess. Lol. People please.

      Tobias Zauner joyful world? We are in a spiritual war right now my friend! What joy is there in this world full of wickedness and filth from every corner of the earth and clergy sit idle. We are smacking the face of God every minute of every day. People are asleep. When the true holy spirit grabs you up by the ars and shakes u up, you aren't exactly giggling from a tickle. There is no time for movie pleasure today! This bishop is asleep! He needs the holy Spirit to awaken him. What appears to sound like arrogance in my voice is called spiritual reality. The devil has most people wrapped in piles of sin from marian apparitions to false churches to cults to TV and music and everything else. Prophesy is unfolding before us but many are not watching. Jesus judged using scripture and so am I. The Pope should do the same. He says, " who am I to judge?" The fool is a soldier for Christ who is permitted to judge and stand on the word of God. How foolish he is! Jesus came not to bring peace but a sword. Yes, I'm having a bad day everyday. And I would say this so called bishop of the church should make me laugh if it weren't for the fact that he is another let down and makes me further cry.

      I doubt Bishop Barron got a check from the studio to do the review. Also, if you’ve followed Word on Fire, he’s been doing movie reviews from day one, when he reviewed The Departed. The point is to engage the culture and water those seeds of the Word, which includes movies, TV, books, music, etc. I pray that you be more open minded and discover those places in the culture where people are crying out for God in the darkness. We should be providing them with light, not scorning them.

      prairie mark okay. You aren't getting what I am saying. And you basically are saying that you needed to stick your finger in the fire to get burned instead of learning from others that it is dangerous . Even so, this bishop should preach like an apostle. Do what Jesus would do. Jesus doesn't change for modern times nor does the bible. This is exactly why these movies are no good for people. Their concept of good and bad gets twisted. So you say that you needed to experience evil to understand good. But I guarantee you that's not why 99.9% of people do what they do. You know Eve was told not to do something but she didn't listen either. Well, involve yourself in the world's pleasures but I wouldn't recommend it. When Jesus returns and you are at some ungodly event, i'm sure you will be prepared to tell Jesus that it was an experiment in understanding evil and not an excuse to join in on desires of the flesh.

      Sharon, movies are a very universal medium of art. What if the only connection between me and someone completely different is a movie we've both seen? If we can learn how to analyze the themes and lessons and messages in the movies, we can talk about it to people and give them insights about the movie, about life, that they never would've heard otherwise. Knowledge is a tool. We can't just avoid pop culture and expect to change anything. We have to know it or at least be aware of what the people in our culture are being taught. Knowledge is power.
