- The Real Roxanne (July 24, 1963) is an American female hip hop MC who recorded for Select Records. The Real Roxanne was born in Brooklyn, New York. In the 1980s she, Roxanne Shanté, and others were engaged in the Roxanne Wars, a series of answer records inspired by UTFO's hit song "Roxanne, Roxanne," being the officially sanctioned artist in response to all of the answer records. She scored her biggest hit in 1986 by teaming up with Howie Tee on the single "Bang Zoom (Let's Go-Go)," which reached #11 in the UK Singles Chart, her only UK Top 40 hit to date.
The role of The Real Roxanne was originally filled by a different female, Elease Jack, who recorded the first single The Real Roxanne under the character's name. Meanwhile, The Real Roxanne claims to have been introduced to UTFO in a fashion very similar to the Roxanne story. Already acquainted with Paul Anthony George, a member of Full Force, the group that produced UTFO.

What a great interview! I got into hip-hop around 1982/3 here in the UK and I still listen to various records from the "Roxanne Wars" era. I remember hearing "Bang Zoom (Let's Go-Go)" for the first time on the John Peel Show before it became a hit in the pop charts here and thinking what an innovative record it was. I still love it to this day. I really like Roxanne's second LP, but I can understand her backing off from hip-hop if she felt like she couldn't really be herself in terms of the lyrics and message. It's a shame though, cos the sound of her voice and flow was dope IMO and she's one of my favourites from that era. Stetsasonic too!
