I bet that show was something to behold. The energy was probably so pure and dark. I’ve always said, even before I knew how close watain and dissection actually were, that dissection had definitely influenced watain. You can feel the connections in a lot of songs and albums.

I really respect Erik as a musician and visual artist and he has GREAT taste in classic metal. The only ones of these I don’t have are Funeral Mist and Nifelheim and I might have to get them as soon as I can. I love how he clearly adores an epic or cinematic quality in metal - I get that same feeling when listening to classic Metallica or Black Sabbath or even Bathory or Dissection. These are all great picks.
Btw - the latest Watain is really sick and I’m hoping they’ll at some point make it back to my city. They haven’t been here since before the COVID-19 epidemic. Please Erik! The U.S. West Coast loves Watain!

Gotta love when BM singers are approachable and don’t take themselves too seriously aka Mortuus of Marduk. Erik is a nice guy. While at a concert in SF with The Devils Blood and In Solitude back in 2011, I was standing in line to get my ticket and I had a Manilla Road shirt on, Erik came out of his tour bus parked outside of the venue and he said to me “nice shirt”. Also, I had the change to personally meet Hoest from Taake after Eindhoven Metal Meeting 2012 in an after party and he was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.

Honestly my only negative thought about the album is some sections of it just sound way too produced. The songs are great and the style is still very Dissection, despite not being as extreme as the previous albums. But the clearly edited dead stop silence parts and some other aspects of the production just make it hard to fully indulge in the vibe of the album for me. Just an opinion though.

You want perfection, listen to DISSECTION. I have to be honest, I like Motorhead, but it's always puzzling to me to realize how they are ADORED and WORSHIPPED by so many bands. They have good heavy metal albums, without a doubt. I just don't capture that alleged greatness that others do. Riffs, solos, drums, bass, voice. Competent, quality and catchy stuff. But nothing groundbreaking that sets them apart from tons of 80's heavy metal bands who never left the underground. Many were actually more interesting, more creative, and technically more advanced. Just an honest opinion from someone who owns over 1000 music albums.

Except they were groundbreaking. They released their first album back 1977(it would have been 1975 if On Parole hadn't been shelved), and were doing what they were doing before any of those other 80s bands did what they did. They were on their 6th album the same year Metallica released their first album. They released their 4th album the same year Iron Maiden released their first album. They brought the punk into hardrock/metal before anyone else did. Philthy was the one who really introduced the double bass that inspired so many thrash drummers. You can't judge Motorhead by today's standard you have to judge Motorhead as a kid who is hearing Overkill for the first time back in 1979, when there was really no one else playing like that. Scott Ian is quoted as saying "Who are these crazy Mexicans, and how do they play so fast?". That was Scott hearing Ace of Spades back in 1982. There were no thrash metal albums out at that time. That's why people consider Motorhead the Godfathers of Thrash. Barny from Napalm Death called Motorhead the first extreme metal band. If anything Motorhead were THE groundbreaking band, it's most of the other bands that weren't, because they all followed after Motorhead. And I own well over a thousand albums too. Venom were groundbreaking too, but the problem with Venom is that by 1985 all the bands that they influenced were now doing what they did, but better.
