Watain: An interview with vocalist Erik Danielsson

  • Recently I had a chance to sit down with vocalist Erik Danielsson of the popular and controversial Swedish black metal band Watain. The band is unique in the sense that despite the fact that they have maintained their extreme sound throughout their career, their appeal continues to widen.
The band has also expressed the idea that their music and outlandish live performances (which have often included severed animal heads -- yes, real ones) are a very specific form of artistic expression, occupying a space outside of a world that they view as a shallow place.
Their latest album "The Wild Hunt" is the band's most diverse album to date, and has received widespread acclaim from critics and fans alike. The inclusion of a moody gothic ballad on the record has been a point of discussion on the web and in many publications. That being said the album is no more melodic or accessible than their previous releases, so I thought it would be a good idea to speak to Danielsson about their strange cross-over success, and I delve deeper into the in-between place where the music and philosophy of Watain dwells.

Glad you enjoyed it. To be clear, I didn't think it was necessary to go through a whole black metal history lesson for a Watain interview. It was more important to me to focus on the band. AlanCross.ca covers pretty much ALL genres of rock so it was just a general intro before the interview. I suppose I could have used the word "rose" instead of "formed" but I feel if someone wants to learn more about the genre in general, there are plenty of sources for that.

@@paulbryden4006 Getting into specifics with sub-genres and styles is often childish and most respectable artists (such as Grutle Kjellson and Fenriz) will wave you off answering those questions. And it's true, it's childish and immature.
Nevertheless, there are distinctions that are worth making. Venom developed the mind-set and lyricism of Black Metal during their early years, but at no point during their entire career where they considered Black Metal in terms of musicality. There are many definitions of Black Metal, but the core principle is harsh and shrieking vocals, extremely fast tempos, and dark themes. Venom only meets the last aspect by Skandinavian standards, and with a cartoon-ish flavor; Kronos has asserted that many times.
The very first act that comes to my mind, that truly dedicated time and effort into producing black metal, albeit accidentally, was Bathory.
Again, this argument is childish and I am in no way taking your dispute here seriously. But even Black Metal has plenty of culture and knowledge to offer for those interested. In the eyes of the church, Elvis was as evil as black metal at some point.

Of course Venom were doing it since 1980, but that was meant with a pinch of salt and ham. Of course Bathory's eponymous sets the sonic standard, but Black Metal as we knew it, is nowadays represented by a very few names - and you know them, like my compatriots Decayed. Believe me, I was 18 in 1981. I don't mind the "evolution" for specifically "aesthetical and philosophical purposes" - I really don't, but Watain are still within the realms of the black flame there used to burn. I bought Wildhunt deluxe vinyl edition - it's a SUPERB record!

I like Watain but I really hate overintelectualising music and his talking about his superiority to others just because he "can reach the beyond" - skinny small boy talking about him being a wolf amon the sheep. The strongest person is a 2metres+ high african jungle inhabitant, who can break your skull with one finger.

And yet, even though the "with one finger" bit is not quite accurate, man has tamed those creatures as well. Size doesn't matter and quite frankly, and simply, the size and intellect of ones mind is what dictates strength.

Black Metal has always been really pretentious. But thats to be expected when the whole movement and genre started with pretentious kids who wanted to "fight" against the "boring" death metal.
