@@GregDineen It's definitely more adventurous. Most tracks are probably not as easy for most people to get into. In any case, Dissection is my favourite band, and I love all the three albums.
It's always great to see someone from one of your favorite bands who loves loves another one of your favorite bands. Fields of Nephilim is one of the greatest bands to ever exist. Being a fan of underground music, I've seen a lot of great bands that sadly never got their due. The Nephilim were different though. They were signed and promoted as a goth band toward the tail end of goth era. Bauhaus were gone and most of their contemporaries were burning out or attempting to cross over to pop. The Nephilim were not really a goth act. Their music was more dynamic and dense. Saying what genre they actually are is actually more difficult than you might think. It could be heavy or light as a feather. Menacing or melancholy. When they disbanded in the 90s Carl McCoy formed a industrial death metal band and released it under the name "The Nefilim." It's a great album that transcends genre. Fans of heavy music should definitely give it a listen. McCoy recruited a mostly new line up and released their last studio album to date. "Mourning Sun" is basically a mixture of The Nefilim's "Zoon" and all of the Nephilim albums that came before. It took one listen to Watain's "Wild Hunt" to realize that Erik had to be a fan. They Rode On and the title track bear more than a passing resemblance to the Nephilim. I'd been a Watain fan for a long time but had no idea Erik was a fan. If you love dark music you should definitely check the Nephilim out ASAP.
I really respect Erik as a musician and visual artist and he has GREAT taste in classic metal. The only ones of these I don’t have are Funeral Mist and Nifelheim and I might have to get them as soon as I can. I love how he clearly adores an epic or cinematic quality in metal - I get that same feeling when listening to classic Metallica or Black Sabbath or even Bathory or Dissection. These are all great picks. Btw - the latest Watain is really sick and I’m hoping they’ll at some point make it back to my city. They haven’t been here since before the COVID-19 epidemic. Please Erik! The U.S. West Coast loves Watain!
Gotta love when BM singers are approachable and don’t take themselves too seriously aka Mortuus of Marduk. Erik is a nice guy. While at a concert in SF with The Devils Blood and In Solitude back in 2011, I was standing in line to get my ticket and I had a Manilla Road shirt on, Erik came out of his tour bus parked outside of the venue and he said to me “nice shirt”. Also, I had the change to personally meet Hoest from Taake after Eindhoven Metal Meeting 2012 in an after party and he was one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.
Mortuus was a consummate professional at their show in Seoul and gave the crowd a lot of appreciation. He's a human being, he's not your play toy. Not every artist is sociable and wants to chat with everyone nor do they owe you anything. Too many entitled people in metal these days.
I went to the LA show that year. Erik passed by me while I was standing in line to get in the venue and talked for a quick minute. So glad I got to see The Devils Blood they were so good.
He's exactly right about Funeral Mist. Also, I get the feeling that Arioch (Mortuus) is a very dangerous person. And in my opinion Dissection's importance to the world of Death/Black Metal cannot be stated enough.
