    Spot on. I work in Philadelphia PA in the US, inside the city, in what’s called Center City, and I get some clients that want a detailed breakdown of our labor, and then ask why it will cost so much, when most other landscapers won’t even do work in Center City, or even return their phone calls. I have a niche business so I charge for that. Thankfully most of my clients are happy getting quality work.

    The only way the customer could value the labour cost is if the contractor gave a labour cost AND time scale. Why would you do that? Just give a labour and material cost if they want, you could turn up with a team and get it done in a day or on your own and be there for a few weeks…. how else can the work out what you’re earning?

    Top video as always John it’s a topic that grinds me sometimes we all work very hard and quoting is a skill in itself I’ve had clients critise me for getting back too soon then others ring you next day saying have you got quote yet you can’t win

    That view reminds me of the band 'goldie looking chain" lol. I broke my last quote down. The customer said labour was high.... i said you should see our day rates 😅.
    I will NEVER break down again. We got the job with a little reassurance. 🏆

    A few valid points there johnnyboy,
    I priced a job just 2 weeks ago for 80m2 of tobermore 600x400 paving and 60m2 of artificial grass..find here in Derry city all contractors charge very similar prices, most time £2-400 price difference,I quoted for the job £7800 for everything supplied and fitted, I was shocked to learn that another contractor priced the same job, same materials and came in over £2500 less than me, the customer also forwarded the other quote to myself, only difference was they would lay on sand while I only lay onto mortar,
    Anyway I got the job even though I was £2.5k more expensive as this other company wasn’t known in our area,
    It had to be cowboys or scammers looking to take deposits.. I told the customer I believed she had a very close call

      That is a very competitive price .
      Paving 100 m2 £8000
      Grass 70-80m2 £5600
      £13.5-14k job

    J.B,you are a honest gent so i know you will always give a honest price for your labour and materials, but there are so many scammers around, so I sort of understand customer anxiety with projects,if it was me looking for a project, 1st i would ask for previous customers to see if they have been happy with the work and price , 2nd I would review website and reviews, if its bad or nonexistent, l would hear the warning signs, its quite basic knowledge, but some customers, especially the elderly can be tricked, see if they are part of a trade union ,that spells a professional, i.e, F.M.B,or if members of the ombudsman, this all gives the customers safety net,and for a tradesmen its a selling feature that many won't be a member of,so if you have nothing to hide and want to be a top end tradesmen I think these 2 organisations will be the difference between ordinary and top end reliable, I wouldn't hesitate, if i was presented with the facts..

    We must raise the expectation of consumers in the industry by educating them with our in depth knowledge of what we possess and show the value we provide. In time this will help achieve a higher expectation and the price can be reflected.
    Right now the expectation is very low in the trade industry in my opinion.

    I need break down costs unless it's a customer we have worked multimpul times for , otherwise your working for free and guess what you don't get the job !!! I will show a costing after winning the job. And technical specification is the same. Otherwise, the client uses it to show someone else, and again you've done that for free ! So consultation and design fee for those that want drawings , & technical installation is a must ! Again now your client but don't be a busy fool. It does seem to be getting worse with the client thinking theirs a bargain to be had because of a slowing down in the economy! Stay safe and dry John

    Ill break down quotes to labour costs and material costs. No more detail. I wont do hourly rates either for little jobs. And all the time we then spend chasing up payment (not that often)

      My company do jobs much quicker, more efficient and better than other companies so why on earth would I detail costs and labour? Because I'm more organised , have better contacts and don't waste time should I suffer for that? why don't I benefit from it. I find this conversation pathetic to be honest. My biggest issue is when the customer says how long will you take and I day 3 days, and another contractor has said 5/6 days they think I'm cutting corners . Then ,literally after every job they are amazed and say they can't believe how we work . Each to their own I suppose but don't get asking the likes of John and brockstone to justify prices that's an insult, they have years of experience and are a class above so a simple yes or no ...

    I bet that woman that claimed the contractor was earning more than her wasn't facturing in her total cost to her employer. Such as employer PRSI, annual and public holidays, provision of a work place such as office or hospital ward or whatever fixed assets or equipment she needs to deliver the results required of her every week. Because it's her salary plus the equipment, place of work etc plus a profit margin all added together that gives true cost of her every week..

    Hi JB I dont expect the person who wanted the quote broken down did fencing, garden landscaping, or brick laying, hard unremitting work in all weathers, we have never valued Manuel workers in this country, but if u work in a bank and shuffle papers you are wonderful. They keep upping the retirement age saying that people want to work longer, not if you have done what you are doing or as I did working in factories, i was finished by the time I was 61 luckily due to circumstances I was able to retire, but plenty aren't limping along to retirement carrying shoulder, back, arm, injuries due to repetitive strain working

    I have always broken down my quotes from the off, not into great detail, but materials, hire and Labour. I add my 10% profit into Labour and mark up materials. Never had a problem.

    From a consumer perspective, I would never give my business to someone who didn't break everything down for any job quoted over £2k. From what I've observed, everyone in the "trade" wants to be a millionaire driving a brand-new Mercedes these days, and prices are based on what they think they can get away with charging, rather than what is fair.
    I got quoted £900 the other day for a "contractor" (why is everyone a contractor these days and no longer just a builder?) to cut a 900mm personnel door opening in a single-skin detached garage. Skip already on-site for getting rid of the waste material, £15 for a lintel and let's be generous and say £20 for diesel and a £5 for wear on his wet saw diamond blade. I also supplied new bricks to tooth in and sand and cement. That's a max £50 cost for this job to the builder and he stated no more than one day to do it just by himself. (Bear in mind this is just the builder's labour cost for the basic opening - and does NOT include a personnel door or fitting - that's a separate quote from a carpenter). I asked what exactly he was doing to justify over £100 an hour in labour? He got pissy, so I thanked him for his time but said I'd go elsewhere.
    Comparing to a pasty from Greggs or a jumper from M&S is silly because they are not significant investments. £10k plus on landscaping is...
    Everyone deserves to be paid a fair amount for their services, but when builders who have barely any GCSE to their names want a higher hourly rate than a surgeon, there needs to be a recalibration!

      I think that’s wrong to say about GCSE Robert that’s really an insult though you are entitled to your opinion. There are many other costs to consider, Public Liability Van Insurance Advertising Rents on yards tax on van Mot Repairs the list goes on. There are so many variables to consider my friend.

    • @markjarvis9780
      @markjarvis9780 Год назад +1

      It’s supply and demand at the end of the day.
      You can charge as much as you want, and why shouldn’t builders earn as much as a surgeon?
      Most experienced builders/contractors have “studied” their trade for many years to get to that point and the years of knowledge built up.
      You are not paying for the time, you are paying for the experience.
      A lot of customers don’t get that for some reason.

    • @user-xr9jf1km5c
      @user-xr9jf1km5c Год назад +2

      @@GreentopLandscapes Hi Johnny, it wasn't intended to be an insult, but a statement of fact. I appreciate the costs aren't always simple - but they're sunk costs i.e. the builder has to pay them whether he gets hired by me or not. Also, to continue the comparison, surgeons have HUGE public liability insurance costs that would make the average builder's eyes water in comparison to theirs, and get in massive debt for their education rather than earn-as-you-learn apprenticeships for bricklayers, etc., - so it's not always simple on the other side of the fence with costs/variables either. It's about barriers to entry, and someone who builds patios simply does not deserve to get a higher hourly rate than someone who operates on the human body.
      To reframe it, both a builder and a surgeon work with their hands to fix something, one will mend/improve your house/garden wall. The other invariably will mend your body to save your life or improve your quality of life - after decades of study that the average person simply isn't intelligent or committed enough to complete.
      We can debate about overheads etc, but at the end of the day if overheads are too much that often means the business isn't profitable or viable, and you can't simply continue to pass on the costs to the customer any longer - the hard choice is to either make less money in order to get business or call it a day. That doesn't change the fact the customers are entitled to itemised costing and to make their own decision about whether they value your labour at the same rate as you've priced it. Customers shouldn't have to subsidise an unprofitable business by being taken advantage of by disproportionate quotes.
      To sum up, in my personal opinion (others are entitled to disagree) if a builder isn't prepared to itemise their costs i think it's because they know they're trying to pull a fast one and have something to hide.
