Great videos, we’re about to have our garden landscaped partly with porcelain paving. I hope our landscapers watch your videos and take as much care as you do.
Love your videos so profesional and tricks of the trade no one tells you to do this ,which makes it more professional and gives fantastic results .... BIG THANKYOU...
I’m in California, so I don’t know if things are just done differently, but I just had a contractor look at my new build dirt patio and say that I need to lay cement first before tile. He was giving me a quote for cement and artificial turf. Does that sound right? Is it a good idea to have cement first and then do the tile? Our land is new and the dirt is still softish. He’s doing other neighbors backyards with cement. But I wanted to get tile though, because it gets very hot here in the summer.
Hi, I actually had a meeting with. Phil Graves who works for Deltile in America 🇺🇸 and we talk about this topic regularly. The US as many different climates similar to Europe in places so there are many ways to install Porcelain, in the UK 🇬🇧 we are probably a little ahead here in some ways. But I am happy to do a Zoom and even put in touch with Phil who is in Texas. Regards John
Best tip, lay the slab with out the spacer first so when you do add the s[acer the slabs tends to pull back against the original slab, found that the hard way today, this is excellent,Ii will try this tomorrow.
Hi Johnny boy Great video , what does not come across though is your eye to level to hand to get the bed somewhere near ? It's a craft be based on years of experience and knowledge mate not something that can be got in a couple of years pal ! Working to line and level seems easy and you make it look easy but it is as you know by far a trade many cannot master ! Great video and quality belt and braces stuff mate , something we all aim to achieve in our work 👍👍 keep safe and I call mate later in the week 🙏🙏👍
Can/should you use this same approach without using plasticiser and sbr. I'm using 4-1 sharps + cement porcelain tiles with ultrascape Priming slurry.... or do I need to add 1 or both of the ingredients into the mortar.
Thanks for videos John, apart from being very informative with lots of great tips they are also very entertaining we just love watching them. We are in the process of selecting our porcelain slabs for a new patio we liked the ones in Tippers 1200 x 600 and liked the laying pattern similar to the ones in your video laying the next layer 600 offset , however the lad in the shop said the slabs have a slight camber and we can only offset by 300 25% of the slab width. Your thought’s on this would be most appreciated
I am awaiting a quotation on removing existing patio and extending slightly. I will use similar porcelain tiles. How much per m2 should I expect to pay? 30m2. Tia
Going off a quote I had recently to extend a very small piece of concrete driveway while I had a bad back, approx 30k lol🤣....... Post covid tax I expect 🙄🙄
I see you use sharpsand for these but in other videos you use building sand, i'll be laying a sandstone patio and also mayfair silver paving steps, should i use sharp sand or building sand for these as you've made me think twice now! Thanks mate.
Great videos and tips John. About to do my own. Can I ask why you put a level flat bed in at that height instead of just a little higher then tapping it down, wouldn’t that ensure full contact first time?
Love this video. One question why can't you have it level left to right and have one drain off from the house to the lawn why do you need 3 levels. What is your opinion on laying porcelain on a concrete slab with a uncupling membrane using exterior tile adhesive and grout .
Evening John, hope you well, John I’m after a pedalo wash boy, but everywhere I’m trying is sold out. Was just wondering with your contacts if would be possible to get me one? Thanks Heath
Big fan of your vids, I did my patio last summer but one of my porcelain patio slabs have been badly chipped, what's the best way to lift and replace that one slab mate ?
Personally I would cut the middle of the slab out, so you have a square in the centre of the tile, then cut to the corners, then try getting leverage under the tile to lift it in pieces. With ceramic tiles I would normally put a hammer in the middle of the tile to crack it and lift it, but obviously porcelain tiles are tougher and you probably wouldn't be able to do this. There might be an easier way to do it, and I'm sure Jonny boy will correct me if I'm wrong.
Hi Johnny, Ive just started up on my own and id love to pick your brains about some things im struggling with. would you mind if i contacted you? Been watching your videos for a while now! Great channel
@@GreentopLandscapes in one of your videos you mention a solvent based sealent is ideal, how would this compare to elements product ? Also what is the longevity of elements sealent?
Hi John. Jamie from Worcester here. Just wondering if you know anything about ultra scape flow point smooth grout. I can’t get the easy grout for love nor money at mo and I’d just like to finish my patio area off. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards Jamie
What do you think of the latest Indian slabs on the market, Jewell brand, I'm hesitant about buying them but the wholesalers says they are brilliant. Have you any experience with them
Superb Video. Watching because im 50/50 whether to install 35sqm of porcelain in my garden in the summer or pay someone to do it. As is the case with a lot of trades people, they all do things differently and use their own products. What grouting product do you use?

Hi Gregor thats a good question, its a well known fact that water can cause cracking in concrete but you need it to bind it all together and let the magic happen but its the compaction that gives the Lean mix its strength dont forget the hot weather but as long as it forms a ball and stays together thats good.
@@GreentopLandscapes that’s amazing thank you so much. My base of type one and lean mix will be going down this weekend and then starting laying next week, your videos and responses have been brilliant for a novice like me!
Hi Johnny, great video and learning much before I start my project. Could I please ask when accounting for the slope / run off, how far is the bubble on your spirit level roughly leaning. I was thinking as far as the black line or would you think slightly more.
Hi GLD, I'm asking you because basically I dont trust the other cowboys on YT and you are by far the leaders in your field. I want to install a path using 600 x 600 x 20 porcelain slabs, the slabs will not be laid directly next to eachother, there will be a gap of 150mm all the way around of which I intend to fill with decorative 10mm pebbles. Currently the area is grass of which I intend to: 1 dig a trench and line the edges with timber. 2. line the trench with weed fabric 3. add mot type 1, compact 4. add sharp sand compact. Q1. now do I mortar directly on to the sand or do i need to screed a concrete base for each tile to set on? (obviously adding slurry to each tile) Q2. what depth do you recommend for layer of mot and sand please Q3. 40mm mortar thickness? Q4. if a concrete base is require for each tile what thickness should this be? many thanks and keep up the great videos
@@GreentopLandscapes thanks, I’m a tiler/bathroom fitter by trade and always back butter my tiles. Obviously you guys use your slurry but I’ve been told that using tile adhesive does the job as well. Would you advise doing that though?
After all my experience of ‘craftsmen in our area, my top tip would be to do a training course of maybe 1 day, buy the tools and do it yourself. You will still save thousands and if it goes wrong then you just have to fix it yourself not spend hours in the blame game of materials vs contractor, totally disillusioned with trades to be honest, they are spending my life savings and just don’t care
No your correct l, but does not have to be in domestic situations and as long as it’s not bridging, as that’s when you may have problems lie thermal transfer etc.
Great videos. That last tip with pulling the slab away before spacing is the 1. Learnt the hard way lol

Why've you gone for a wet mix on this job?
Do you suggest wet or semi dry? I don't know which to use now on mine as you use both
Because I can
Semi is better

Hi, thanks for video..great instructional help. One question on sharp sand, is this typical standard building sand from the merchants?
Thank you sharp sand is con sand it has more of an angular particle in it as apposed to building sand, hope that helps
