  • On September 30, 1955, James Dean drove his Porsche Spyder into eternity at the intersection of old US Route 466 and Route 41 near Cholame, California. The barren landscape has remained virtually unchanged since that time. A few years after Dean's crash, Route 466 was abandoned and replaced with the current Route 46 (which is visible on the right of the screen). This video was shot on September 30, 2022.

Thank you so much for posting this video to get a real perspective of the road conditions that Dean drove on.

Wow i knew it wasn't the same road that it had changed over the years, never thought there would be that much of it left ! Amazing to kinda drive his last drive thanks for showing us dean fans ❤

I was just looking at the crash site on google maps, and wandered eastward to see where I could follow the old route 466....quite a windy and dangerous little stretch. I can just imagine how many more accidents happened over the years, before the highway was rebuilt. Thanks for uploading, I know it was obviously sped up for effect.... but still was a helluva lot of fun to imagine going through the gears and accelerating around those curves.

Thank you. It was sped up for effect and sound was added, but that is 100% the road James Dean (and Rolf Wutherich) drove to his death. It's very narrow at places and utterly beautiful (running alongside today's Rt 46). The fence in the video is about 1 minute from the crash site. If any idiot says this is fake, that's on them.

I really wish that fence wasn't there so we could really see the intersection as it used to be. Because the new intersection though it's still in the general area was moved several feet from the actual site.

The road he was on is the same as it is today except at the intersection of 41. The intersection was realigned in '59 to make it safer. Which also means the shrine at the fence is several feet away from where his Porsche actually ended up and where he took his last breath.

Nice video. "Y" intersections are hair-raising dangerous.

Is there more of that road left or is that all there is ?❤

There was a bit more of it visible off to the side, but it really is a ghost of a road-and what’s left of it is basically inaccessible.
I could practically see that Spyder winding its way through the hills towards The Intersection.

Could almost hear that little Spyder winding around the hills en route to its date with destiny.
