Twilight is a great time to explore these remnants of old 66, beautiful desert sunsets and scenery. I'm sure the ruins of these roadside towns could tell some amazing tales, and I'd love to explore these places one day.
Hi Archie. Great to see Cadiz Summit. That is where I lived when I was a kid. In a house made of RR Ties, chicken wire and plaster just above the white rock wall. There is a lot of interesting things to see there. 3 Mines on the property (It is still in the family), a slab up behind the rock wall that used to be an aircraft beacon before modern avionics, we used to have to turn on the light each night for planes to navigate from Las Vegas to LA, The old restaurant foundation, the ice house which we also built a small house on top of, the old garage that my Dad and Uncle built plus a bunch more. I plan to be up there this October for the Rendezvous. Maybe see you there.
brilliant ! on my next trip to visit my dad who lives in Kigman arizona. I will return to the summit of Cádiz and look for the places you mentioned. I always go to 40. In what year did they leave that place? Is there a lighthouse? I would appreciate if you can give me some details. I would like to explore more. Thank you
@@archiemoreno there are several other interesting things there also. When you get ready to go back contact me. We can exchange e-mail addresses and I will draw you a map with the many foundations and their locations, descriptions of what was there and pictures of the buildings while still intact. We left there I think around 1970ish. I lived there from the mid 50s to 60s then went back every couple weeks for several more years,
That was cool. There was a movie made about 35 years ago called Bagdad Cafe, a little Indie film , I wonder if it was actually filmed in that area. Edit: just looked it up, it was filmed at the Sidewinder Cafe at Newberry Springs 50 miles west of there. Bagdad did actually have a cafe but has been razed. That cemetery was interesting.
Old US66 is not much of what it once was. It has been hacked up, paved over, re aligned and renamed so that only short spurts of it exist anymore from Chicago. The biggest section left is 135 mi across Az, a pretty sorry showing for what once was 2448mi trek. There are still roads across America still intact just as cool, just as fun. US50 originally began in San Francisco but now Sacramento and runs 3019mi to Ocean Beach, Md. It has all the old time motels, gas stations & cafes as 66 did. But 50 is still intact. !
This is such a great video! I wanted to hope in my car and drive all the way out to this part of RT 66 (from Vermont). Another place to add to my bucket list...:) Thanks for sharing your journey.
Every year on vacation I head down this road only to find it closed..Always have to take Kelbaker road..Will they ever open this stretch of 66.. Thanks for showing it to us❤
Those places all started out as railroad sidings in the 1880s or 1890s. California Southern, later Santa Fe. Or maybe Southern Pacific in the 1870s. The SP later sold the line to Santa Fe. They named them alphabetically and in order.
Sounds like an eyesore. Haha! But I'm sure it's perfect for it. I'd rather they make better use of the land they've already been using for solar projects right off of I-40. If I'm not mistaken, the first solar plant in the USA was built there, but torn down or decommissioned.
Sad 66 is so cut up and realigned. Even the long, 135 mile stretch thru Seligman and Ash Fork isnt the original dirt alignment. Hell, in Albuquerque, N.M., 66 even crosses itself in the downtown area.....

Totally shocking. You know how to delve into the most unique and precious places in the USA. Thank you!!!
Thank you for posting this video. I am planning to follow the same route from Barstow to Goffs this spring.

Real desolate looking. Would not want to break down there.
I'm more worried about getting pulled over and ticketed for being on the road when it's closed. 👎
It looks so beautiful and desolate at the same time! 😮
This might sound weird, but this looks like a good place for solar farms - or is it?

I'll say it's quiet!! I was thinking electric, too.
Esse lugar é bem misterioso.
Good ol California for ya, those bridges have been damaged for about 6 years now. Damaged road & trash everywhere, Beautiful California!
Once went to the crater in Amboy
All these little towns are dead. Guess everyone moved to San Francisco
