    In this video I'm gonna talk about my thoughts on Sony GM and G lenses. How these lenses compare to 3rd party lenses from Sigma, Tamron, Samyang? Are they worth the extra investment? What is current Sony approach with lenses like 24-50/2.8 or 16-25/2.8?

    Yes they're worth it but a lof of us are casual hobbyists that dont have the $ for GM lenses. Personally over the years i see myself replacing third party lenses with GM lenses little by little but It is nice to have third party lenses to get us started. Thats the single reason why i chose Sony over Canon.

      Yup! That’s the healthy way I’d say - it’s great to have so many choices and then decide if you want to upgrade after trying options!

    GM lenses have better weather sealing. Makes a huge difference in terms of longevity. In my opinion, that justifies the price difference and categorization.

    It was a great talk about lenses. I really appreciate the wide options on Sony, although to be fair, I mostly use GM lenses as much as I can afford them (now I have 3 of them and hope to get more in the future). But I definitely can appreciate a lens with interesting rendition and character like for now, I don't have a 50mm GM in my arsenal but I do have the Sonnar 55/1.8 and when I decide to use it, then yes, I'm glad I did.

    Thank you for the video. Sony has more lenses than I can afford but I really like the new trend of the Sony G at 16-25/2.8 and24-5/2.8 that seem to be a great fit for the Compact C bodies like the A7CR and A7CII which I’ve bought into for travel. I still also shoot the full size bodies like the A1 and A7RV and enjoy my original GM and now GM II version lenses that I own and probably continue to own both. I do wish the small G primes were more like the 20/1.8 G than the 24/2.8 G. Maybe a compromise at f/2 like a lot of the Sigma I-Series. Just one missing. A modern 28mm at G or GM. Can we get one? Take care.

    I am really looking forward to the rumoured 24-70 f/2 (or whatever it is!) My only wish is that they made a lens like the older Canon EF 50/1.2 L - which had incredible flare. It was everything. I understand why they don't! But I wish they did.

    The only non GM lenses I own are the Viltrox 16mm and the Tamron 35-150mm. I have the 24 GM, 35 GM and 24-70 GM2. I've been debating selling the 35 GM for a bit now but haven't pulled the trigger on listing it.

    Magic do you think Sony A7R V is good in 2024 for weddings? Thinking of getting one and A9III seems overkill and only 24mpx, A1 is getting a bit old and more expensive than the A7R V.

    • @jaybeckerich
      @jaybeckerich 2 месяца назад

      In my experience 24mp is clearly enough MP. Unless you are cropping often, clients have no idea the difference between 24mp and 61mp.

  • @nickwilliams7867

    I will most likely sell my 16-35GM MKi for the 16-25G. It's very big and not that sharp at f2.8 after 30mm and I only ever use it at 16-22mm as I also have the 35GM and the 24-70GM mkii. My wide gets used at almost every wedding but only for a few shots (mainly the large group shots taken up high on a monopod ) So it spends 98% of the day in my camera bag as it does when shooting corporate events. So something small and light appeals to me especially as I can get most of the money by selling my 16-35.

  • @Daniel_Ilyich

    To me, historically, the main difference between the budget lenses (other than what Magic mentioned) and the premium lenses across all brands was build and colors in less than ideal light. The more expensive lenses had that nano crystal coating that allowed you to retain nice colors is less than ideal light.

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer
      @MagicWeddingPhotographer  2 месяца назад +2

      Yeah that shifted now in my eyes. Sigma, Tamron and Samynag caught up to that point. Those super cheap low cost lenses still struggle with colors in challenging light

  • @RockyMaiviaMiami

    They are worth it based on Sonys limitations mostly. Some weight savings but mostly profile, fps, ibis, and focus breathing limitations

  • @markwildphotography

    The 16-25 would have been nice at f2! Wide end I use the Viltrox 16mm 1.8 and the 20mm G which are both very nice! 2.8 just doesn’t cut the mustard for me as I work in some very low light venues!
    The 24/70 f2 will be tempting but I might have to sell a kidney for that one!

    Sony A7cR + 10-20mm F4 Crop G lens + Crop video recording mode = The best iPhone 15 pro 4k Log replacement, noone talks about :) Zoom range is equal to iPhone, but the quality and stabilization is much better, because of oversampling in 4k crop. 4k 60 fps is also supported with this G lens. I think, it's the most compact iPhone replacement, that's why this small G lens is much better than big G lenses (with A7cR only). With full frame lens (16-35mm f4 pz full frame) video stabilization is bad. But in crop mode the stabilization is far better than iPhone's one. With this 10-20mm f4 it's just "a small camera that is compact and can record better than your iPhone" :) Some "Fuji X100VI..." are not the replacement, because it has no zoom

  • @Daniel_Ilyich

    I still don't get the point of 24-50 f/2.8. I'd rather get the a Tamron 28-75 2.8. It's a more useful range. To me, a cheaper 2 lens combo would be the Sony 16-25 and the Tamron 28-75. Then you have a very nice range covered. From ultra-wide to slight telephoto. I lust after the new Sony 24-70 2.8 GM II, but $2300 USD is just too much for my enthusiast self. There's the older version, but it's too heavy for an everyday lens. For now, I'm just shooting with a 50mm GM f/1.4. My goal is too have something like a wider prime for indoor photos and a tele lens for when i want portraits with a really compressed background.

  • @Daniel_Ilyich
    @Daniel_Ilyich 2 месяца назад +1

    Well, the 16-25 isn't a GM lense because you are sacrificing significant color range for a smaller body. If it was a 14-24 lense, I think would be a GM lense. It's more expensive to produce an optically corrected 14-24 at f2.8 with all of the coatings than a 16-25 with significant barrel distortion (yes, you can fix it in post, but you are cropping part of the image).

    • @MagicWeddingPhotographer
      @MagicWeddingPhotographer  2 месяца назад +5

      Yeah it seems that there’s no cropping with lens correction - it’s 16 after correction!

    • @JosefFoti
      @JosefFoti 2 месяца назад +1

      @@MagicWeddingPhotographer Yes, from what I've heard, the lens is originally slightly wider so that when you correct it, you get the intended focal range.

      @nickwilliams7867 2 месяца назад +1

      @@MagicWeddingPhotographer do you agree with his comment that you are losing significant colour range with the 16 to 25. I’ve not heard of this before.

    • @Daniel_Ilyich
      @Daniel_Ilyich 2 месяца назад

      @@nickwilliams7867 I don't know why i said color range. That was odd. No, I don't think Nano Coating has an affect on color range. Rather, if you are shooting on a very sunny day, nano coating does a really good job of retaining contrast by minimizing reflections, ghosting, and things of that nature. As such, colors will look more saturated in those scenarios. I'm sure there are really good filters that will help with that, too.
