- Upgrading the Lenovo Yoga 510-14AST laptop with a 240GB Kingston SATA SSD.
This is a fairly simple job, requiring only a Torx T5 screwdriver, a small Philips head screwdriver and a plastic pry tool.

I am in the process of upgrading this laptop to SSD. Hopefully it speeds up this ultra slow performance. This shitty laptop was lying in my cupboard for almost 3years.

To do the memory just remove the metal cover on the main board and it is a DIMM under there. The processor can't be upgraded.
Hopefully this investment should make this laptop usable. I thought it was only me experiencing extreme sluggishness, but after reading the comments I am not alone!
EDIT: I replaced the existing 4GB SODIMM RAM stick to a new 8GB one (only $30), and OMG, the laptop is now super fast & responsive. I can finally use it for online classes and play minecraft XD.
Edit 2: I replaced the HDD with the SSD and my goly! The speed is insane. Definitely gave a new life to this laptop

Fuck, that's cool ! I feel like I need help.. but you can actually update the ram ? I have no clue about computers. So is it hard to do ? Where do you buy the ram ? I need it for online classes too, and to run maya and Adobe for college.
Hey buddy replacing the ram is pretty straightforward, although it feel a lil overwhelming after removing the cover, just remove the sodimm cover & swap the old one with the new stick. You can get a 8gb stick for 25$ on amazon (crucial recommended). Idk if replying after 7 months helps, you might have figured out by now lol.

Try upgrading the ram to 8GB or more. Costs me only 30$ on amazon to get a 8GB compatable ram stick. Opening the back panel was a nightmare, but I managed to replace the memory (SODIMM single-channel) and my laptop is working like brand new.

No, there is only space for one drive. I'd recommend getting a larger and cloning the contents of your current one across to it before fitting.

Hello. I am unable to unscrew some screws from the heat sink assembly because its stuck to the mother board. Screws seem to be forcibly stripped so it is impossible to screw out...Any idea how to unscrew it without brute force?
Did you clone the SATA info into the SSD before doing the changes?

I bought this laptop (AMD A9-9410, 4GB RAM, 1TB HDD) , this laptop is a complete garbage. Battery last at the most 2 hours (with minimum brightness).
I can't throw away and I can't use it. Planning to upgrade to SSD. I wonder if upgrading too SSD will speed the laptop.

Upgrading the ram did the trick to me. It is finally usable for my online classes and minecraft

@@gujargayatri No I didn't face any sort of issues with my display once I swapped my ram stick. The only problem I faced was my PC taking much longer to boot up than usual. Perhaps due to windows scanning my memory stick every time.
So I am not sure what problem your system is facing. Maybe try running a diagnostic memory test?

Not really - it was a customer system I worked on 3 years ago.
The speakers should just lift off their rubber mounts and then its just a case of threading out the cable for it and unplugging from the mainboard - may require removing the battery first.

Hello! Can i add a 1TB ssd? Will it overheat? Ive seen on the offical wesbite that the max ssd they recommend is 512gb. Will it affect anything if i add a larger capacity?

I would like to replace my keyboard, service shops want from 150-250€ which is way to much. I can get a cheap replacement, but I don't really know how to go on after I removed the backpanel. any help?
You'd need to source a replacement palmrest with working keyboard. A quick look at prices and I think I'd charge around £100 for a refurbished replacement inc fitting, but I'm in the UK so not particularly helpful to you.
The price they're quoting you might find it cheaper just to buy a second hand complete machine.

Default boot device missing.... It's obviously on the disk that

Guys you gotta set the new boot device on BIOS setup: also you will need to install another OS from a live usb bootable pendrive

I think there is a single DIMM slot under the metal cover on the mainboard.

no, upgrading processor is not possible directly. In this laptop processor is attached to motherboard, so you cannot remove it directly. if you want to upgrade it, you will have to upgrade motherboard. Alone processor cannot be replaced.
Yes, if you had the £10k machine needed to change it, but that’s not cost effective lol.

Yes you definitely can replace the existing stick with 18-6GB one (single-channel). I upgraded mine to 8 gigs and it is 50% faster and more stable. I can finally play minecraft XD
