Go Biggi! Wear steel toed boots! Thanks DW for another excellent documentary. USA also has a "driver shortage," but it really is a retention problem because it is very hard for long-distance drivers, who are treated as independent contractors, to make much more than minimum wage after subtracting expenses and considering total hours.
Truckers in America are considered unskilled labor (on purpose) and in this way the employers don’t have to abide by the labor laws which apply to trades and skilled labor. The 1970s were the golden age of trucking and it only went to sh!t ever since Jimmy Carter’s carrier deregulation in ‘79. (funny how everybody blames Reagan for that, but the trucking deregulation was Carter’s deal)
As a short haul commercial driver, I found this totally fascinating! It was such a well done/presented documentary and showed the human side of Biggi's life also besides just hauling down the road. I hope DW brings out more documentaries, 10/10!
Iam canadian truck driver for 25 years, long haul ,we stay on highways away from home average 5 to 12 days depending on job, because we run in teams also and distance in north america is crazy.but the truck s are double to triple axle and big bunks compared to europe with built in refrigerators and television
Excellent and important exposure of what really impacts folks in our current global society. Thank you DW! You Rock! I remember a doc on truckers coming north from central america due to shortage of truckers and better opportunities. The personal sacrafices are different, but still not acceptable. These truckers took their whole families along but it wasnt easy regardless - for anyone. Glad youve shared this with all of us. Our instant goods are not free shipping in the human sense. Even in a different country i am that much more aware thanks to you. Regular eating is so hard due to time crunch and availability and PARKING - which is a whole other bundle of yarn.
A hint for Biggi: With pain from injury, try Arnica gel. Works wonders. Made in France by Boiron. Comes in a tube, easily applied. Good luck to her. She's an asset to her company. Old school truckers with good work ethics, are hard to come by.
Truck driving in Europe looks pretty cool. Beautiful scenery and the cabovers have more room on the inside than I thought. The truck stops look clean too. Definitely would be a nice change of pace to get to drive in Europe for a year or so
Totally agree. I also feel like that super cheap fleet spec interior we often see in the states isn’t as common with the cab overs in Europe. I’m sure it exists but I feel like a majority of the European trucks I see have the leather wrapped steering wheel, heated/cooled seats, buttons on the steering wheel, nicer seats, etc. that we usually only get on like owner/operator spec trucks. I’m curious how their trucks ride over there too because our trucks are a nightmare; even a brand new 2024 Freightliner Cascadia rides so violently. Even with the seat on the softest air setting, the smallest bump will send me flying through the roof. It’s unbearable. Volvo is the only truck I drove where I could go over a rough road without being thrown all over the place as the interior rattles itself to death. I wonder if the Cabovers are better built.
@@Ward413 I hope to answer your question well. I would say the base spec model trucks here in Europe are well equipped. They have things like heated seats, steering wheel controls, A/C etc. The higher spec models tend to add things like leather or infotainment or digital climate control etc. But overall I'd say all trucks are well specced. As for comfort, I would say I have driven MAN's, Iveco's and DAF's that I thought were a bit harsh, but again most trucks, especially Volvo and Scania are very comfortable, even if it's a base spec Volvo FM or Scania G-series. Obviously, the higher spec trucks ride even better and, for me, the best is the Volvo FH16 Globetrotter XL. The automatic gearbox (most cabovers are auto these days) is flawlessly smooth and the truck is very quiet and comfortable on distance. The Scania R-Series is also very good. I hope this answers your question, drive safe friend!

Damn straight. Was roommate with a guy who did a lot of trucking up north and even once walked along the North American coast looking for mining jobs, lol. Then recently heard some interesting stories when I was dating a fine young woman who is doing Trucking, and unfortunately it was just too rare for our schedules to actually match up. But she'd frequently talk philosophy with me just talk on the phone while she was on Long hauls, too bad I didn't want to stay up through the night to give her company
Truckers and all other people, who are part of the logistics have my full respect. Without their hard work - we won't have anything at the stores, cafes and restaurants, that we take for granted. The civilization relies on good logistics, running smoothly all the time, day and night. And when it comes to Biggi and other women like her, who work this hard job - my respects doubles! It was really a very nice short documentary, and with a lot of human touch and emotion. I really liked it and I hope Biggi and all other, who work in logistics stay well, healthy and strong! Thank you.
As an American Trucker of 34+ years of long haul service. This documentary was 100% spot on copy of trucking in the USA. I myself is a lot like Biggi. I have Type 2 Diabetes. Large BMI etc. She is me and I am her. I was surprised to see the "Lifestyle" was very similar. Stay safe Biggi. May GOD protect your health and your relationship with your daughters.
Sugar is the worst and Biggi isn't helping her diabetes by drinking 4 mugs per day and eating unhealthy. She can help her toe by wearing Asics extra widefoot specifically.
I hope the announcer doesn't feel weird or embarrassed about talking about an average person's life compared to the scale of genocide or climate problems they usually do, but I think this video is a great place for truckers to share their stories of life in the comments. Might be one of the most vital yet underappreciated careers in today's world, and yet I've repeatedly been completely unfamiliar with what life looks like for my Trucking friends, and whatever they tell me usually sounds surprising
It’s the same here in America, you would go into the truck stop in the evening and sit in the professional driver area and all the drivers would be eating and talking about whatever came to mind and having a good time. Now with all the foreigners no one talks and the old drivers got out of it or retired.
This is a hectic job! Oh my word...looks hard-core. I respect all the people that do this job, because the facilities for food and personal hygiene is terrible. I heard a lot of trukkers sometimes pee accidentally on the truck seats, because they are in a rush or the toilet facilities are terrible.
@Dw Documentary is the best ❤ love 98% of ur documentaries. Keep it coming. Love from West Africa The Gambia. I wish I can be a truck driver like her in Germany.
I USE to drive a semi in USA for 10 years ❤ We work 11 hours driving 3 hours on duty, not driving . I come from a Trucking family. Love this lady . Safe Driving Award
150M in revenue and a shortage in employees. Have they tried paying a good wage for the people destroying their bodies and family life? No, probably not.
She blames her job for her weight which yes it definitely makes her weight worse but if she eats the right things and does the necessary things to stay fit then she wouldn't need all that stuff. People are bed bound and they don't have diabetes and atleast she can get out and actually get exercise. Her job isn't the leading factor in her health. Just eat the right things.
Driving long distances in a truck is a lonely miserable existence. If you don’t have a family and you’re young, it’s not bad. You can travel and make money. But for someone with a family it’s tough leaving your wife to deal with everything while you’re away. It’s not very healthy either. Lots of fast food, eating in the seat. It’s a sedentary lifestyle.
I run country runs doing trailer work in the graveyard hours in 🇦🇺... We are often overlooked and treated poorly by motorists here... I love the industry but the ease of gaining your car licence here makes our lives hell at times. It was interesting to hear they are regulated as they are at 10 hours driving. With my company I have advanced fatigue management certification and can do 11 full shits a fortnight. as long as I have 2 successive nights off with a single I am good to do a 13 hour shift with a 1 hour break so I total 12 hours paid work times 11 for a fortnight. It equals very good pay, but as with anything you do that is legit work you work for it.
Aussie sparky over in UK ten years. ..mate the roads over here are insane...hard enough in a normal car...the roundabouts and general set up on the network compared to oz is insane
I've been truck driving ever since 2020. Did over the road for my first year and never touched it again. I'm making the same amount hauling local oil tankers, and I'm home everyday.
Good report, DW. I hope Biggi takes care of herself and especially her diabetes. I'm type 2 diabetic and trying to eat healthy is not always easy. I wish her the best in the future.
I love this kind of documentary. There's a channel in Japan (Paolo in Tokyo) that cover daily lives of a worker. I love if you can make similar series.
Respect for this woman and all women truck drivers and drivers 💐❤ As a local tour guide and driver since 10 years, i can realise all of matters realted this job. She is more than a regular male !!!
I used to be a trucker in Germany from 2010 through 2015 driving all over Europe. Now since 2017 I drive in the US doing over the road as well. I have to say I really miss Germany and Europe and I'd go back in a heartbeat if the pay was great.
in documentaries I see that American truck are very noisy and old style inside. The gear stick also I don't understand why it is so long. Which differences you see?
@travelerexperience84 Yes they all have long nose some more some less so the turning radious is bigger but roads are wider too here. Also, when you go for oil change or repairs you don't really have to move stuff away from the dash like in Europe, that part I don't miss lol. I don't remember the noise level difference because im too used to it but maybe US trucks are louder than European.
I was stationed with US Air Force in Hof/Saale married my wife who is German finished my tour got a job driving a truck in Germany Max Rubig KG Swarzenbach/Saale 1978 till 1986 there are rules for hours of driving in Germany, they were not used drive till you drop what ever was needed up to 20 hours a day, if you were stopped by police a small fine was given that was it. May be it has changed now?

Thank you.
Very nice documentary. Thank you for that and thanks to all the truck drivers!
Thanks for watching!
Trucking is not for everyone. Great report, respect to her and all truckers cause they sacrifice so much.
Truck driver life is not easy
Being unemployed is more difficult
One of my favorite channel DW. Good stories and very well prepared!
Respect for this woman👍
Please share your dietetics / nutritionist / podiatrist qualifications with us all in the comments, thank you Dr!
@@joebloggs6131 you don't need a degree. It's not rocket science. No need to get all emotional..
@@joebloggs6131wat😮.
Excellent reporting and the end of story is heart-warming.
It’s the same here in America, you would go into the truck stop in the evening and sit in the professional driver area and all the drivers would be eating and talking about whatever came to mind and having a good time. Now with all the foreigners no one talks and the old drivers got out of it or retired.
Same with all social settings in the West. Very depressing future ahead of us.
@@danielwells774 maybe things will swing back the other way .
In Bangladesh,Drivers are driving relentlessly all day long.Eating, sleeping, washing etc. all other activities are performed in the roadside area.
This is a hectic job! Oh my word...looks hard-core. I respect all the people that do this job, because the facilities for food and personal hygiene is terrible. I heard a lot of trukkers sometimes pee accidentally on the truck seats, because they are in a rush or the toilet facilities are terrible.
Respect and Salute to the Lady
Love from India
Biggi is brave! I respect her commitment to her job. Much love from here!!!
@Dw Documentary is the best ❤ love 98% of ur documentaries. Keep it coming. Love from West Africa The Gambia. I wish I can be a truck driver like her in Germany.
I did not doubt for 1 second that this woman meet her delivery on time. Steel!
I USE to drive a semi in USA for 10 years ❤ We work 11 hours driving 3 hours on duty, not driving . I come from a Trucking family. Love this lady . Safe Driving Award
How is trucking in the States??
Thanks dw for this ,can we please have more documetatiries like this😊
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Excellent way of teaching logistics 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤Trucking a revealing experience in itself.
One of the Best documentary i have seen.. will appreciate if you guys make more of this kind.
Recent days , DWD seem to be really hard-working 😂 i watched new videos every day
150M in revenue and a shortage in employees.
Salute to her indomitable spirit
Very interesting. Good Luck to Biggi. A good inspiration for all.
😊
☘️ . Thanks
Good documentary . Long distance trucking is a way of living , not only a job.
I've been truck driving ever since 2020. Did over the road for my first year and never touched it again. I'm making the same amount hauling local oil tankers, and I'm home everyday.
@@NotUp2Much Long haul seams easier, but one cannot sleep well in the truck no matter what, and it is detrimental toy your health.
Amazing lady and tough job. Hats off to you Ms. Biggi🎉🎊👏💐💐💐💐
Biggi smile made me proud of her man... kudos biggi👏👏👏

We still need truckers and drivers so we should treat them well, with respect and dignity (and good wages!).
Blames her job but keeps doing it? Doesn't make sense
Welcome to America

Great , this lady adds so much , thank you.

Hats off to you, Biggi. Keep up the great work. Love from India.
Grt piece of documentary.
Good report, DW. I hope Biggi takes care of herself and especially her diabetes. I'm type 2 diabetic and trying to eat healthy is not always easy. I wish her the best in the future.
Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences!
Salute to all the truck drivers this is not easy keep up the good work God bless❤
I love this kind of documentary. There's a channel in Japan (Paolo in Tokyo) that cover daily lives of a worker.
I love if you can make similar series.
Respect to all women who truck long hauls ❤
Highly appreciated her❤❤
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
But it's not and hence you and the millions go to USA every year from everywhere around the world
Welcome to USA 🇺🇸
@guilleport Thanks but I am from New York and have trucking experience in both continents.
in documentaries I see that American truck are very noisy and old style inside.
I love her attitude
I was stationed with US Air Force in Hof/Saale married my wife who is German finished my tour got a job driving a truck in Germany Max Rubig KG Swarzenbach/Saale 1978 till 1986 there are rules for hours of driving in Germany, they were not used drive till you drop what ever was needed up to 20 hours a day, if you were stopped by police a small fine was given that was it. May be it has changed now?
Im Learning a lot about this Career, Thnks from Canada..
