I am posting here as I am a little disappointed to finally realise that some geraniums (including Rozanne) are sterile and the reason they keep flowering is because the plants keep trying to find a way to reproduce, but ultimately are unable to reproduce and keep flowering in hope. I am planning to look for fertile geraniums from now on. I have just found and planted Mavis Simpson and Mrs Kendall Clark which I believe are fertile but am on the search for new non-sterile cultivars or species geraniums. if you know of any good ones I'd love to hear about them. Thanks.

Geranium Rozanne is a derivate of the non-sterile Geranium 'Buxton's Blue'. If you're looking for a non-sterile Geranium similar to Rozanne I'd recommend that one.

Why is it disappointing? Just because the plant is sterile it doesn’t mean bees and other pollinators won’t like them. They love geraniums. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get seeds, these geraniums are easily propagated by division or by basal cuttings.

    • @neverlostforwords

@@Knappa22 Thank you for this info. Geranium Rozanne is still flowering here in my garden. I know the bees love the flowers. I read somewhere a few months ago that a UK research study found that Ger. Rozanne is bees'favourite plant. :) I haven't tried propagating them yet. Is autumn a good time for either division or basal cuttings?

I have geranium rozeanne and wargrave pink in my garden. I propagate them by division and fill my garden with both varieties. They flower so profusely and for so long, and bees love them. A first class garden perennial.

I do love your videos. They remind me that you should have confidence in your own opinions, make your own garden with help from experts but not ruled by them, and that gardening is not an exact science but relies, as well, on trial and error.

John makes me fall in love with gardening again and again and again and again..... that’s for the hardy geraniums tutorial. I thought cranesbill was the only hardy variety and can’t find it in any of the near by nursery. One of them have rozzane and I’ll get it tomorrow!!! Thank you 🙏🏼

Geranium Rozanne: Be careful! I have cut this plant back at least five times this summer (Melbourne Australia) and it is still going nuts! It won't stop flowering and the bees love it. It dies back in winter but comes back reliably and goes crazy all summer. it is clambering over all the nearby shrubs and perennials. (sigh) The bees love it by the way! :)

    • @neverlostforwords
      @neverlostforwords 6 лет назад +1

Just a note to say it is still flowering in mid-winter! Ok, just one or two flowers and mostly foliage. I cut it back at the start of winter to a few inches and even just the crown on a few plants, but it definitely senses spring and is slowly moving away. What a clever little plant it is. :)

I’ve loved watching this and mainly I think because you are so relatable and the sense of humour. I smiled watching because you come across like any of us gardeners .... do we prune or don’t we🤔oh I’ll just leave it as it looks too good to cut back. That’s me all the time. It’s hard to be ruthless even if it’s for the best. Thank you

I could talk all day about plants with John. He's the gardener friend we all wish we had! I wish in some new plant varieties they tell you how they differ from the other ones -like same color but bigger flower. Or interesting flower color but the flower size is smaller etc. I was a person not really into geraniums. But now I'm turning and I want some, a strong selection. Not many.

I love the smoke bush and geranium combo. I haven't had any luck with hardy geraniums in my zone 7b garden (near Atlanta, GA). There are several pecan trees nearby, so maybe that is the problem...

Good info!! I like that you say to just leave them and let the plants do their own thing. I've never trimmed any of my Geraniums.. But I think I might try to just nip them here and there to keep a few looking more mounded.. Maybe??

I am so amazed at how well your geraniums grow and branch out - I buy them from the local nursery here in the states- they bloom wonderfully but dont grow much more than a foot tall and foot wide. Zone 6 b - Is it because I planted them in part shade?

    • @johnlordssecretgarden

It depends on the variety, for instance, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and Geranium ‘Anne Folkard’ are very strong growers

What would be a good geranium for west facing garden where the garden bed is shaded by the fencing panel or/and house? The bed is open to the sky though so there's always light and it is exposed to the elements.

Want a ground-cover that grows well in dry, hot, partly shady areas underneath pines and eucalyptus. Preferably that is rugged, evergreen, easy to manage (not too rampant) and flowers through-out the year.

my dad planted 5 geranium plants probably 25 years ago. we inherited them and they are doing fine. they are 4 orange and 1 lavender. BUT this year, in one of the orange plants, a single white flower appeared! we have been tending them for about 5 years and we have never seen this before all these years. I know there are white geraniums, but can this also be a genetic fluke or variation on an orange flowered plant?

Would you happen to know the name of a hardy geranium that grows about 30 inches tall and wide. Has a loose airy form. Raspberry red flower with black eye. Can't seem to get any info on this plant.
