Great review. I bought a 2020 Si a few months ago and am very happy with it. It's my daily driver, and I wanted a stick car that was both fun and practical. This checks all the boxes. I did look at the Kia Forte GT and the Jetta GLI, but when Honda added adaptive cruise to the 2020 model, that clinched it for me. It's good to have for the boring highway trips. I own a 10gen Si and it's a lot of fun driving a stick again. No major complaints I don't bother using sport mode as it's very hard to tell any difference than normal mode. I get about 28 city and high 30's highway. However, I am very intrigued by the Civic Hatch Sport w/manual that will probably be my next car.
I heard somewhere that you could actually disable the piped in engine sound through the settings in the infotainment. And if you're not opposed to doing a quick tune with your car, that could also get rid of the rev hang as well.
I test drove a 2020 model. The reviews have been pretty good, so I had high hopes, but I was not too impressed. If the transmission is the high point of this car, the engine really is the low point. The rev hang is worse than your average turbo 4 banger.
For the 2020 model, I would have easily taken an MPG hit if they completely eliminated the rev hang, rather than simply revising the gearing a little. Acceleration in manual cars with rev hang is a pain in daily driving, with tuning being your only option. I have a 2018 WRX that has rev hang going into 2nd gear, and it’s really annoying in traffic but I don’t want to tune it yet due to my warranty.
@@kevinnorris6558 Had a 2017 Wrx Premium and I went the same route as you, I was so close to just buying a access port, Subaru killed the drivability with it.
Own one, can confirm the rev hang is ridiculous. Shift from first two second jerks unless you take 2-2.5 seconds to shift slowly. It’s like it hates being driven hard. Yes, it’s a tune away but at that point you’re spending another 500
ColeWorldNoSandwich It’s so cumbersome in traffic and to top it off, I’m the one holding back traffic behind me while Sentra’s and Camry’s zip past me. The first manual I’ve ever driven was a 5-speed manual Honda Accord and it was SO SMOOTH in traffic and daily driving, and didn’t have bs rev hang. Honda makes some really great stick shifts but they’ve chosen to ruin that in the past couple years.
@@doubledown8229 trust me if they bring back the s2000, a few things will happen. Either it will be really heavy, due to the features people nag manufacturers to add in and safety regulations. Nope this si is what makes honda ...well honda. This car is amazing on the track and is affordable. It beats the gti, miata, brz, ford focus st on the track. Performance and tuneability is what they were built for and this car improves that by a huge milestone.
2020 si coupe pearl white owner here - it is absolutely a super fun daily!! Of course there are tons of better cars, faster and sexier. But this was what my salary and credit was able to afford me 🤣 Great reviews man keep em coming!
It's actually the engine sound thats is picked up by a mic and amolified by a speaker. It is THE engine sound and not something fake. What is there to rant about. You got your insulation and your engine sound as well. The main thing ur forgetting....this a legend car....Honda.
I drove this and a GTI and while i would expect the Si to last longer, the GTI was so much better in every category for me. Including price.. I've had the GTI for almost 2 years now, and it has been 100% reliable.
JEdmund27 I don't drive mine in the winter, i did the first year, but bought a winter beater so I don't drive it in the salt and snow anymore.. not that it wasn't good in the snow, it was fine, actually did great.. but i love that car and don't want it to melt like everything metal in the rust belt.. that said it's been totally reliable.. if you want yours to last just make sure you change the oil every 5k miles.. the mile interval at 10k is way too long.. these high strung motors need clean oil that oil cooled turbo will be far more expensive to replace in the long run than the oil changes..
Eye Dunno i only drive stick in a newer car, it's probably my last new car, but yeah it's definitely a stick. The clutch in the GTI is actually pretty weak so i expect that I'll get 60-100k out of it before i have to replace it.. i got 200k out of one in a corolla and nearly 350k out of one in a Previa..
the civic needs the accord vtec 2.0 liter, the accord needs the civic's lsd. this is the first time the accord has no engines not borrowed from the civic, and slower ones too, exceot hybrid. the accord needs it's own engine again.
I'm at 8.5k miles right now in my 2019 and I've been thinking about solving the rev-hang with ktuner, but I don't want to void the 3yr/36k warranty. When did you get Ktuner? Did you wish you got it sooner?
@@mcJJP A tune may only void warranty on stuff that breaks directly related to the tune. Actually the powertrain warranty is 5yr/60k. My thought then was: If I don't fix the rev-hang, I may get rid of the car well before that warranty expires. It's that annoying to me. I did it at around 21k miles, and no problem so far. I always baby my car when I'm not pushing it.
11:20 I have no way to confirm this, but I'm pretty sure the collision braking system is set overly aggressive from the factory until it "learns" your driving style. When I bought my Civic new in 2017, the collision braking system, it had many false positives like you described. After a few months it really calmed down though, and I haven't had a false positive in years now.
You made the right choice. I had a 2020 Si Coupe and I regretted buying it because of the rev hang. Made me hate the car. I ended up getting rid of it a few weeks ago and the rev hang is half of the reason i got rid of it. Drove me nuts. Had I noticed it during the test drive, I wouldn't have bought it. I honestly have no idea how I didn't notice it during the test drive because it's very noticeable when you're driving the car.
Rev hang, fake cabin sound and turbo lag kill this as a buy. Rest of the car is a great value. Hope they fix those items from the factory and then it’ll be the car to buy at this price point. Thanks for the great review Topher
Yea its been 4 years since i bought mine and i still love it. I disconnected that noise thing too its behind the glove box. My car is plenty loud in the cabin but not obnoxiously loud. I have the tsp stage 1 plus tune with a full cobra cai and a type r clutch, love it
Wow this is so strange, I was thinking about trading in my car for a Civic SI last night, and knew that Topher always had great videos driving cars to their max in his reviews. So I looked up to see if you had any videos on the SI, and I didn't see any new ones. Then I logged into RUclips tonight, and boom, this was my top recommended video. Thanks for reading my mind, and thanks for the great review! And wow, the cars beeps at you at redline, or was I hearing things? That's really annoying, along with the HDMI port style fake exhaust tip. Buuuuut, other than that, damn this car looks fun. Love watching you peel out to test the 0-60 time. Reviews like these are awesome.
@@markymark535 Hi, no I think I'll actually hold onto my 19 STI for now after seeing this review. I love it to death, but it just gets such poor gas mileage. Other than that it's perfect, minus a bit of road noise and a bumpy ride which doesn't bother me. Maybe I'll wait for the 21 WRX if it gets redesigned. SI looks great, but that beeping at redline seems really annoying.
I have a 2017 Civic Si Coupe. It is fantastic, I love it. Happy my 2017 doesn’t have all the “nanny” features they added to the 2020. It makes it feel like you’re more in control of the car. I highly recommend the 10th gen Civic Si, even if you get the 2020, you will not be disappointed.
My wife and I have an 18 SI. We love the car. Two big dislikes though. The lack of analog control for HVAC and the lack of a spare tire. We live in Michigan and this year, for the first time in my life a pothole ate a tire. Take a guess as to what fix a flat and and a compressor were able to do? Absolutely nothing. A tire is on order. We will have to replace the rest of them soon so as to not upset wear but it would have been nice, to not be stranded.
It is hard to understand this from Honda. I know the Sport Touring hatchback has a spare and it has a center exhaust. I actually think the S/T exhaust looks better but why would they not give the spare tire to us on a SI and make the exhaust fit as needed? I am on the fence about which one I may want to buy. I want a manual no matter what else!
I had a 2017 and the rev hang is annoying at first but as you live with it you learn to shift/drive it so its not as bad. Regardless, I was always wanting for more power. I traded for a 2019 Accord 2.0T manual and honestly it is one of the best Honda's I have owned next to a new S2000 and CRX Si I owned back in the day.
Problem with Civics is the poor wind and road noise insulation. Gets tiring for long drives around 300+ miles. If that can be controlled, then it's a brilliant vehicle.
Rev hang should honestly be deleted when in a different driving mode. Unless it has a heavy flywheel, it should be tuned not to hang in a different mode
@@macdiddles7000 we shouldn't have to put a tune on it if these these can come tuned from the factory correctly... There's Eco, Normal, and Sport... Leave rev hang out for Sport.
Tbh I own a 2019 and was super salty about how the 2020 had led headlights and updated interior and nicer looking wheels. Now that I see how it has that fake sound and all that Honda sensing stuff no one in an si or type r would want, I’m actually happy my car is free of that. I just switched the halogen bulbs on my headlights to LED and they are much brighter. Only thing these cars need is to eliminate rev hang without having to tune them
"without boost, no power and no torque". That pretty much sums up my Honda Civic coupe experience. I enjoyed driving my used 97 Ford Probe GT waaaay more than my brand new Honda Civic, if you can believe that. I find the Honda Civic materials really cheap too...not my thing anymore..
Seems like fun daily commuter with stick. Sound complaint can be ignored. Rev hang is for the longevity. Let's be real. 🙂You get what you pay for. 😜 I might buy one once my lease with Corolla CVT bullcrap ends this year.
That car doesn't need to play engine noises through the speakers. That's really dumb. It's still a quick little car though. I own the non si turbo and it's pretty quick. I was giving a Tesla a rough time the other day.
Couple odd electronics things that Honda should have allowed to be disabled in the software (fake engine sounds, rev limiter beeps), but glad Honda's doing its part keeping the old school goodies alive. Like a 6MT and the LSD. Very few cars still offer those in a neatly wrapped package and still make it a good daily car.
My wife had a black 2018 that we absolutely adored! Someone smacked her head on while she was waiting to turn left at an intersection, totaling the car before its first oil change. We were so sad! The bright side however, is we were able to find a new 2019 Type R to replace it. I’ll yell you though, that little sedan was impressive! It’s remarkable how good it was given how inexpensive it is. Wonderful cars! We recommend them to everyone who solicits our opinion on a sporty new car. I also found the rev hang disconcerting and was slightly disappointed that Honda allowed it to be in the production car.
JAA my wife and two youngest boys were in the car at the time, air bags did their job👍. My wife had a sore wrist and some friction burns on her arm from the airbags and my youngest son (11at the time) was shaken up pretty badly but everyone was fine.
T.K. Morris yep. My wife is a high school teacher, she uses it as her daily driver. We also have gone on the occasional road trip. She loves the car, absolutely adores it. She suffered through the mini-van/SUV years when our kids were younger. When it came time to replace her Honda Pilot she wanted something fun, she really wanted a Type R, but they were hard to find and at a premium over MSRP when we first started looking. Her short list was a Golf R, GTI, and the Type R. I got her to look at an Audi RS3 but she wasn’t convinced it was worth the $65k vs other options. When she test drove the Si, she loved it, particularly how cheap it was👍. So we bought it and loved it, but when it was totaled by the insurance company, We found a new Type R at a dealer not too far away. The car is really very amazing, it really is. The only changes we have made are 18” Enkei wheels and PS4’s and a Delrin shift knob (the OEM knob gets super hot in the sun!).
For a car that doesn’t have a loud engine or exhaust, it makes sense to have a little sound put in to give you a better sense of awareness. Helps when you’re driving ‘sporty’ lol
I love your videos man but saying you didn't like how the suspension stiffened in sport mode seemed so unappreciative. You can turn it on when you want to turn up the wick. It's a lot nice to drive in corners. You made it sound like it's unbearably stiff which it isn't. And obviously you can turn it off. Just my thoughts. Keep up the awesome reviews though.
The exterior is more grown-up than TYPE R, please make it 2.0 TURBO with 6MT or 10 AT with LSD, probably gonna be a bit more expensive, definitely more people will buy.
I have a an EX-L with an automatic, I’d love to go for an Si next time with a stick and some more pep, I’m just not a fan of the spoiler and the racing seats.

I agree. It's half of the reason I got rid of my 2020 Si Coupe. I wanted to love the car, I truly did but I couldn't because of the rev hang. It drove me nuts.
You missed sharing the experience of driving the Si in sport mode. I have it in sport mode almost all the time. I love my 2017. Other than the volume knob and different gear ratio, its still the same awesome car without the pumped fake engine sounds.
Not really sure why Honda thought adding fake engine noise was a good idea, when the 1.5T doesn’t particularly sound that great as it is. Do people actually want fake engine noises? I can’t tell if I’m out of touch here or not. In any case, sounds pretty bad/artificial at higher revs.

I ended up purchasing a 9th gen that was really well taken care of!
Rather get a accord 2.0T ,type R killer with a few mods, people are running 12.6 -12.7 1/4 with type r turbo swapp etc
report that dealer..
Rarity? Lol there’s so many unsold si’s in Texas. A type r maybe but even then adding on a “rarity” fee is stupid
Honestly at this point I wouldn't even bother with an SI when the new BRZ/86 is around the corner.
1 Year later... these cars are still hard to find in Ontario.. I just scooped same one as this video.. $30,900 with 5000km on it... there was only 1 other option.. 1 hour away... a 2018 black with 30,000km and was 26,999... I think i got the better deal. Pick it up tomorrow.. CANT WAIT
I have a question how much you gotta be paying at the month
If I had the choice between removing the rev hang or the piped in engine sound, I’d get rid of the rev hang.
I heard somewhere that you could actually disable the piped in engine sound through the settings in the infotainment. And if you're not opposed to doing a quick tune with your car, that could also get rid of the rev hang as well.
Fan-freaking-tastic job, TheTopher!
Love your videos!
I test drove a 2020 model. The reviews have been pretty good, so I had high hopes, but I was not too impressed. If the transmission is the high point of this car, the engine really is the low point. The rev hang is worse than your average turbo 4 banger.
It's one plug and play tune away from no hang . It is annoying though .
Also I’m not going to lie, Honda needs a return to form, the 8th Generation was the last true Si Generation, with that 2.0L N/A VTEC engine!
nah all they need to do is offer this set up with no rev hang from the factory.
They need to bring back the S2000.
@@doubledown8229 trust me if they bring back the s2000, a few things will happen.
Either it will be really heavy, due to the features people nag manufacturers to add in and safety regulations. The engine will never have the character of the older engine, the price tag will be in the high 50k bracket .
Nope this si is what makes honda ...well honda. This car is amazing on the track and is affordable. It beats the gti, miata, brz, ford focus st on the track. Performance and tuneability is what they were built for and this car improves that by a huge milestone.
Finally!!!! Have been waiting for this for so long.

My experience too. Though not the longevity; I've only had mine a month.
The GTIs are fairly reliable when they have a manual, auto not so much
JEdmund27 I don't drive mine in the winter, i did the first year, but bought a winter beater so I don't drive it in the salt and snow anymore.. not that it wasn't good in the snow, it was fine, actually did great.. but i love that car and don't want it to melt like everything metal in the rust belt.. that said it's been totally reliable.. if you want yours to last just make sure you change the oil every 5k miles.. the mile interval at 10k is way too long.. these high strung motors need clean oil that oil cooled turbo will be far more expensive to replace in the long run than the oil changes..
@@shartingfish5761 Good to know, thanks!

holy crap, that shift noise at the top of the rev limiter sounds pretty bad in my opinion haha

I love that the SI has a limited slip diff but I really want a 2.0T manual Accord. Honda should offer the LSD as an option at least on the Accord.
the civic needs the accord vtec 2.0 liter, the accord needs the civic's lsd.
this is the first time the accord has no engines not borrowed from the civic, and slower ones too, exceot hybrid.
the accord needs it's own engine again.
Had my Civic si for 36k miles. The rev-hang is a pain in the ass and I solved it with Ktuner. Other than that the car is a blast to drive.
Gonna have to “zonk” the fake vents - Joe Raiti...lol
He's one of the few car dealership dudes I'll watch.
Joe Raiti is hilarious. Love the zonks lol. Plus where do we keep the twinkies and paydays in this Si???
But what about the extra cabin space for your twinkies
11:20 I have no way to confirm this, but I'm pretty sure the collision braking system is set overly aggressive from the factory until it "learns" your driving style. When I bought my Civic new in 2017, the collision braking system, it had many false positives like you described. After a few months it really calmed down though, and I haven't had a false positive in years now.
Even in mid 2024, the 2020 Si is still the best Si on the market. most features and best looking
Notorious Honda rev hang. I drive an 8th gen. A lightweight flywheel and tune is essential. Same in this 10th gen
I was really thinking about getting the 2020 Si Sedan but the Rev Hang was painful. So I decided on the 2020 Accord Touring 2.0. It’s amazing!!!!!!!!
That hdmi port comment had me dying yow 😂😂😂 Honda got that plug and play system in the back 😂😂
These reviews are actually really good. Keep up the work
Rev hang, fake cabin sound and turbo lag kill this as a buy. Rest of the car is a great value. Hope they fix those items from the factory and then it’ll be the car to buy at this price point. Thanks for the great review Topher
Take the car to the track and you'll see why many of us really love it
Yea its been 4 years since i bought mine and i still love it. I disconnected that noise thing too its behind the glove box. My car is plenty loud in the cabin but not obnoxiously loud. I have the tsp stage 1 plus tune with a full cobra cai and a type r clutch, love it
Because of your review, I'm picking my 2020 SI coupe up at the dealership tomorrow. As far as I'm concerned, you sold me the car...not them!
I love this car, I love Honda
Did you get one
Recommend a GTI SE instead. Dont pay MSRP.
Mike beep can be turned off. It’s super annoying lol.
@@affinity3281 Do you own a GTI? Have you driven an SI?
I have a 2017 Civic Si Coupe. It is fantastic, I love it. Happy my 2017 doesn’t have all the “nanny” features they added to the 2020. It makes it feel like you’re more in control of the car. I highly recommend the 10th gen Civic Si, even if you get the 2020, you will not be disappointed.
I had no clue these civics were as sick on the inside as they are on the outside, awesome.
J Fazzuoli, how’s your mileage on that. Watched his video on that Accord and loved the sound.
never knew the 2.0T accord came in manual
I loved your review. I liked the fact that you did so much driving.
1.5l in a Si is sad, same motor of the touring. A test done here in Brazil showed that CVT accelerates faster than Si.
Great video by the way!
in a straight line. the manual is way more fun.
Tigerex966 That’s truth, but if you want a good manual buy the Type R, its
way better than the Si
Problem with Civics is the poor wind and road noise insulation. Gets tiring for long drives around 300+ miles. If that can be controlled, then it's a brilliant vehicle.
Rev hang should honestly be deleted when in a different driving mode. Unless it has a heavy flywheel, it should be tuned not to hang in a different mode
Yo-yo K tuner
@@macdiddles7000 we shouldn't have to put a tune on it if these these can come tuned from the factory correctly... There's Eco, Normal, and Sport... Leave rev hang out for Sport.
Yo-yo you wouldn’t be able too the EPA emissions test uses every mode for testing
Honda really needs to update the infotainment system in the Civic line to what they're using in the current Accord.
I really want one of these... from 2019, without Honda Sensing and the terrible fake sounds.
Gabriel Song, I feel the 2019 is the sweet spot. Also really don’t care for the black wheels.
Only thing these cars need is to eliminate rev hang without having to tune them
@@ValkenDnB Does the 2019 have rev hang too?
@@t.k.morris unfortunately it does. you have to flash it with a tune to remove it.

Best performance car in its class.
8th gen civic natural exhaust note is perfect.
JAA yes it is! It all worked out very well, she is driving her Type R now and VERY happy with it👍 as am I whenever I manage to pry it away from her😂
So do you use the type R as a family sedan?
Thats the best place for an HDMI port. 👍 Easily accessible, yet not enough to access it while driving. Smart 👌
I love it, but I really wish it had the 2.0 K instead of the 1.5. Not for more power but for reliability issues namely oil dilution.
I liked the older wheels this car came with than the new black wheels it comes with now.
The Fett Man Exactly!!!!!
Totally agree. Hate these black wheels.
For a car that doesn’t have a loud engine or exhaust, it makes sense to have a little sound put in to give you a better sense of awareness. Helps when you’re driving ‘sporty’ lol
That's a good point, but it sounds awfully artificial. I think a quiet natural engine would sound better than fake engine noise.
Aznbooy i think the best fix is just make the exhaust variable and simple. Open and closed. No need to pump in sound
Mike H I didn’t think of that. That sounds like the best way to do it.
Hondata is a must with these just to get rid of the rev hang.
Cam J but then you lose factory warranty 😔👎
MugenK20 I’m a Honda tech and have done plenty of warranty work on cars that have been tuned

I’m sure a simple tune can fix that rev hang issue. Looking at buying one for my daily!
