  • We review the next evolution of the Honda Civic, the SI. With heavy competition from the likes of Ford, Subaru, VW, Mazda and Hyundai, Honda is no longer the king of the Sport Compact segment. The Si offers affordability and great economy, however, will that be enough to be the best in class?

    Finally someone who actually appreciates cloth seats! Leather isn't always the answer! I love a good set of cloth or sport cloth seats. They can feel better, last longer, and even look better.

      802 Garage ya i love cloth seats. Even better with heated seat option. Leather is a joke here in AZ yet anytime you want the high end engine they force you to buy leather seats. Annoying

    • @rudfil
      @rudfil 7 лет назад +23

      If opt for perforated leather seats you won't feel hot and sweaty as regular leather seats plus leather if you look after them can look good after many years and they won't smell or get soiled like cloth seats.

    • @kadie1414

      Rudy F most times only one version of a leather seat is offered by an automaker. Most times its not perforated. Leather burns, must be maintained like a baby. My cloth I dont do anything to maintain them and after 9 years besides fading from sun they look brand new. Comfortable immediately upon sitting on them in all weather.

Yes, the type R is very aggressive for sure but if the sport and si model wasn’t so close in performance that I would have regrets if I wonder if I’m missing out on so much fun!! Too bad the Si doesn’t have 240 horse power, I would totally buy it!

    After buying the 2018 Si in June and driving it almost 2 and half months, I have to say this is an amazing car. I have done several trips back and forth between Northern California and Los Angeles, and this thing flies, doesn't matter how steep the inclines or curvy the roads. After driving a 2006 Camry SE V6 for the last 13 years, it took some time to get used to the 6 speed manual, and other than the infotainment system which I hate, I love this car. One thing I have to say, this is a car that rewards you for pushing hard on it, but when you have to drive it normally the young speed demon in you starts screaming and wants to break out. On the freeway I am always hitting 80 mph plus without realizing it, I know one of these days I am going to get a ticket, and that is when I wish I had just bought another Camry....

    I bought a 2016 Civic Ex-T a year ago before they announced the SI. I obsessed over the SI for nearly a year, until my local dealership finally got one, and I said screw it and took the plunge. What an upgrade! I just turned 40, and only now have I become interested in cars thanks to something called a "mid life crisis". I was just cruising RUclips watching reviews of my new penis extension, when I came across your content. Not only did you righteously affirm my love of my new car, but I found your delivery and knowledge to be top notch compared to anything else I'd watched. I will definitely be recommending your channel to anyone who will listen. Keep up the good work.

    I've been lovingly driving my fully stock 08 Si since I was 16 from 4.7 miles on the odometer all the way to 147k (first and only car), and I've not felt the urge to buy another vehicle until I started to see how glowing the reviews are of this new generation. I don't need a hauler, I don't need 400 or 500 horsepower, and I certainly don't need reliability questions. All I can say is, I went last week to test drive a 2018 and it gave me a warm, bubbly feeling. The seating position, the position of the shifter and pedals, the sightlines, the throws, they all were wonderfully familiar. There are sure differences both mechanical and electronic, and I do strongly dislike the fake mesh work on the front and rear, but that emotional feeling is something that nothing's going to be able to match for me. I was incredibly pleased with how well the return to form panned out here, and despite my misgivings about Turbos, styling features and some other nit noity issues, it just felt good in a really intangible way. Honda has made it incredibly tempting to slide the 8th gen into the secondary role as a second car and enlist the 10th.

    I have had my 2018 Si coupe for 9 months now. I love it. For me the fuel economy + fun ratio was important because I drive a lot for business. I am averaging 37 mpg with about a 70/30 highway to city ratio. As an older buyer, one of the reasons it gets criticized was why I actually favored it... a quiet engine. If you are driving a lot you don't want to hear noise all the time. I personally love the styling from the side and front and the coupe is for better in the back. In terms of driving, it is super fun. Rhis car loves to turn at speed. I go out of my way to find the curves. Storage is great in the center console. Personally, I don't care about the volume knob, but I do wish I had waited for the the parking break fix in 2019. It is hard to know if it is on. Overall, this car has made me a Honda enthusiast. It is clear they listen to their customers and pack in value for dollar.

    I have an base 2006 A3 Hatch 6-speed I've owned for 11yrs. . Someone ordered it and backed out. I got it for the price of a golf when 2007 came around and no one would buy a manual car. I've test driven the 10 gen twice & am impressed w the total package, price is amazing. I'm jumping ship on the A3 for this new Si! Btw this is the best Si review I've seen yet. The only one Ive subscribed to. Total gearhead flavor. Thanks for your work Savagegeese you nailed the overall " best of all past Si's driverness" of this 10 gen Si. I felt same on my 2nd solo test run. Btw A3 2.0t was engine of the year for 5 years in Germany before imported into the states. It was put into the Gti in 2010. 0- 60 6.7. The new si 1.5 t is the A3 2.0t only bullet proof. It should the jewel of an engine mr. Honda would be proud of, as designing small engines with efficiency of motion, inherently built in, was his forte.

    Fantastic review. I'm 52 yrs old and probably don't fit the usual profile for this car. I was looking for an economical commuter car that has a "fun" factor. This car has exceeded my expectations. Reminds me of my 2005 RSX with a more useable torque curve. It's the perfect blend of modern tech, sport, and economy.

      If you want to amp things up, get a Ktuner from Two Step Performance and a cold air intake from 27WON. You will NOT be disappointed! How's 255 HP and 295 LB-FT sound? It hits the mpg's for an average decrease of 1-1.5 mpg. (for me) I am 47 and this may very well be my mid-life crisis, LMAO! I bought my 2018 for all the same reasons as you did, but did some research and discovered a true wolf in sheep's clothing. It IS effortless. syedlink27 If you’re planning on daily commutes and practicality, the Si is great. The WRX is nice but it definitely chugs fuel and overall reliability is suspect (I own one). If you live in a heavily congested area, you may find the Honda a lot more manageable to drive in traffic when compared to the WRX. I’ve never driven a VW, let alone a GTI so I can’t help you on that. I know your comment was 8 months ago but just wanted to chip in.

    After a ton of research and looking at lots of reviews (including this one), in June 2018 I bought a Civic Si. I completely do not regret it. Some of the annoyances of this car, such as not so smooth shifting, throttle response off the line and turbo lag etc. were easily fixed. Ktuner with Two Step Performances stage 1 tune fixed the performance issues, changing out the OEM Manual Transmission fluid with Amsoil Synchromesh made shifting and the transmission extremely smooth, and upgrading the shifter rocker with an Acuity Rocker upgrade reduced the gate spacing making shifting tighter and brought the gears closer together. I recently added a performance exhaust, so basically spending a little over $1000 completely revamped this car bringing it to a level that Honda probably should done as default

    • @kevinnorris6558

    Mr Goose: I own the 2017 Si Coupé. You're dead right about the parking brake, seat heater on shift, and volume knob. I'd add that the clutch action is a little funky. The seats ARE awesome. The LSD is killer. The vehicle dynamics are great. Mine doesn't surge in fourth gear--It seems I'm always in that gear around town. I can cruise the freeway all day long at 80 mph and 40 mpg. I own a 2017 GTI and with a roof rack at 80 mph I get 33mpg. I'm not sure what reviews or biased internet forums you've been reading, but GTI's are extremely efficient. Oh and its wayyyyyyyyyyy more reliable than my focus ST. That thing was at the dealer every two months. With a roof rack I could never get more than 27 mpg with it. Lay the rear seats down flat in the GTI and you've got almost a truck bed of storage space in the back. Open your eyes man, the GTI is phenomenal as is the new SI. I'm glad Honda finally discovered turbo chargers. If the SI was more of a true hatch, I would have considered it more. Love the blue paint.

    The sixth gen... Oh yes. That was my high school life in a nutshell. F bodies and Civics with mad subwoofers in the trunk... I'm in the nineties all over again. That said, I'm in the "dig it" camp when it comes to the Civic's overall styling (but I completely agree about the fake intakes/vents). Great review. Really digging the style you've carved out with your channel.

    I know everyone on the internet hates the styling of the new Civics, but I've owned a Civic hatch (Sport Touring) for a few months now and I've had a ton of people actually come up to me and compliment the looks of the car. Usually it's something like "That's a Civic? That's really sharp!"
    Granted, that is not at all why I bought the car (I thought everyone IRL would hate it as much as the Internet would). I think it just goes to show that maybe us car enthusiasts take things a little too seriously sometimes. Yes, the fake bumper vents are stupid, but to the average person, they make the car look cool and give it a lot of character that is missing in more humbly styled cars.
    I liken this car's styling to the Fast & Furious franchise. Yes it's over the top and stupid, but I like it anyways.

    • @tr0llbuster292
      @tr0llbuster292 5 лет назад +5

      Also very subjective. Si may be faster and is more so for the track than the sport, but it has an HDMI exhaust, but I do like the wing. though. Lol. Besides, most Si owners from what I've seen are salty mainly because the sport hatch and Si look so similar interior and exterior and there isn't as much "exclusives".
      But the Si has power, suspension and shifting. Not only that, the color tonic yellow pearl can also be found on the regular Civic coupe minus the power. On the Sport and Sport touring hatch, they both literally have the same tires 235/40R18 while most of the civic line is at 215/50R17 or 215/50R16. And on the Civic couple, the rear is the same while the hatches are different in terms of the "fake" vents.
      I have the sport hatch, but of course the Si is better, not because of the looks, but because what it delivers in terms of performance. (And because of the infotainment system). With the Si, you're getting the best of everything. On the sport especially, you're actually limited on the infotainment system, but that depends on the driver.

    • @tr0llbuster292
      @tr0llbuster292 5 лет назад

      @LastRaven So... you nit picked out one point out many points I made? Lol. I got you.
      1. That was an observation [I personally have seen which is subjective] from people who also own Si's.
      2. But does that mean ALL Si owners are salty because the sport hatch and the Si are the same even though it says "most"? Obviously not because it doesn't state "all".
      3. You many not care but that doesn't mean other Si owners don't care and vice versa.
      4. This.. is.. all.. subjective.. mate.

      I very much agree. Honda really fucked up by not making a Si version of the Hatchback. I mean with a few mods the Hatchback isn't any different than the Si in my opinion. If they slapped a Si symbol on the Hatchback Sport I bet you everyone would be buying that hatchback instead of the lame sedan. Thats why they didn't make a "Sport Injected" version of the hatchback.

    So after owning the 2018 Civic Si for a month now, I have to say that this is an amazing car. Here are the pros:
    sporty look
    Comfortable and spacious seating
    Lots of storage space, spacious trunk
    Thought out interior design
    Super responsive 1.5L engine
    6 speed MT
    amazing handling and cornering
    very quiet engine (for being so small)
    Now the cons:
    removal of buttons for simple tasks put into the Infotainment system
    annoying notch sound when shifting into second and sometimes 4th
    ECU interferes when accelerating hard off the line
    My biggest complaint is basically the same complaint I have for all new cars. Why the hell do you take away the buttons and knobs for the AC and radio? If I want to adjust the fan or the AC settings, I have to go into the climate screen and make those adjustments, which can be distracting while driving. I just want a fricken button or knob, like in my 2006 Camry. I don't mind the screens for other functions such as adjusting certain functions or for my backup camera, but for stuff we do everyday, there should be buttons and knobs, or just knobs and buttons! Other than that, this is a pretty awesome car that is fast, responsive in the lower RPM range, and rewards you for going hard without sacrificing to much gas mileage. I took it on a trip between the Northern California bay area and LA, and it was comfortable to drive, did not slow down a bit on hwy 152 and the Grapevine (those of you who live in California know about the Grapevine!) and easily kept up with the big boys like the Charger and Mustangs, and surpassed them on the curvy roads of hwy 152 and the Grapevine!

      Hecker pass is where I test my 2018 civic Hatch. Gotta say it loves the turns. HWY 17 is even better. I couldn't believe how fast I could go on those turns to the point I was keeping up with BMWs and Porches going at least 80MPH
      My next attack is on HWY9 and HWY35 and HWY84
      I'm sure the Si handles a little better than my hatch but I'm having tons of fun and getting amazing MPG all around.

I can’t wait to get one myself except I hate all this Honda sensing crap that’s being put on the new 2020 models. When I get one, the first thing I’m going to do is get a Hondata and disable the infamous “Rev-hang” issue. Next mods will be a PRL intake then a nice MAP Catback or MagnaFlow Exhaust.

  • @doctorferdinand1003

    The 10th gen chassis is definitely the best handling civic platform we've seen, but the motor is just so bland. The soul of these cars was always the ultra responsive, high revving motors. I really can't imagine these chassis improvements are really worth sacrificing the thing that made sporty Hondas so enjoyable.

    • @crispinsugita9398
      @crispinsugita9398 7 лет назад +13

      If you look at the old Integra Type R or Prelude SH's, the chassis was equally (if not more) important. There's a reason why those cars were heralded as "the best handling FWD cars ever." They had great chassis with independent suspensions. The 10th gen has a great chassis with an independent rear suspension like those old cars. You can't add an independent suspension in the after market. What you can add is power.

    • @carlmanu
      @carlmanu 7 лет назад +4

      +Crispin Sugita adding power does not necessarily add character. I wish they would've kept exhaust vtec on this engine. The same way they did with the new type r engine

      The key to the DC2 Chassis is far more complicated than simply being IRS (every si for the past 2 decades has also been IRS), but I see your point. Chassis dynamics are important, especially if you're talking about something like a type R. But the soul of a performance Honda is in it's motor, particularly when we're talking about Si's which historically have been much more about their motor than their chassis.
      The issue with this car isn't power, it's character. The car is only slightly slower than the previous two generations, but it's missing ALL of the character. There has been no shortage of good handling FWD cars for the past 20 years, and that's especially true today. Honda's offerings have often been slower than these competitors but Honda has always delivered an extremely special feeling, frenetic power train. With this advantage ceded, Honda is competing in a field of other DI-T cars that handle well with no defining attributes to elevate this Si.
      Sure, the car handles better, but with it's distinguishing feature removed, why buy an Si over it's competitors that also handle very well?

Gone are the days where I am going to mod the crap out of a car, but just want something fun, something with a lot of power down low, and something i can tote kids in. I don't want to have to rev the hell out of it to get power like the old Si of yore. The adjustable dampers, the LSD make this the perfect FWD car in my opinion. 1. The purpose of the small opening on the front passenger vent isn't to let air IN - it's to let the sound of the horns OUT.
    2. Pulling UP on the electric parking brake switch and activates the parking brake just like pulling UP on the handle of a mechanical parking brake.

      +zroger73 Except you have to have your foot on the brake and there is delay in actuation and release if you dont hold brake long enough. If I want to pull brake I cant, have to get in car and put foot on brake. Fine for auto trans not so much for manual.

      you shouldn't use the parking brake anyway unless it's parked on a steep hill. leave it in 1st or 2nd gear. or reverse if the car is pointed down hill. using the brake can warp the rotors or make the brake pads stick to the rotors, especially if you are using a more aggressive compound.

I actually like the styling of the new Civic sedan. Those big vent things on the Si look good on the hatchback, but not so much on the sedan. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. For some reason the styling makes me feel the same way I felt back when the 1982 Toyota Supra came out, which was Japanese styling at it's finest. The tacked on fender flairs were ridiculous, but it worked. It was awkward, different & challenged your thinking - same with this Si. I saw a pristine 84 Supra just the other day & it looks better now than it did back then...

    I think the Si should've been released closer to the release of the standard cars. It's hard to be excited about this car with the Type-R coming at nearly the same time. Everyone needs to take notes from Porsche on these release schedules.

      +Jan-Michael Franklin I agree, all Civics should be setup this way. I dont see it as an Si.

      savagegeese 90's Honda (You know, the company that had big balls?) would've done it that way!

    I’ve owned a 3rd gen Integra then an RSX and a 2008 Civic Si which I loved the most. I now drive a sporty V6 AWD family car because I have a family but miss the the Civic Si. I still like to see videos like this to see what the Civic Si is like now. Great review.

    Wow, honestly I didn't expect you to like this as much as you did. I honestly thought that owning a 6th gen civic and an S2000, you'd really not be a fan. Most people talk about how uninspiring and dull the motor is. I didn't like the way this thing felt so "unwilling" to rev out. The sound was uninspiring and the power felt like an on/off switch. Either you made decent power in the midrange going full bore or you made nothing below ~3000. It didn't feel sharp to me like previous N/A motors. Shifting with the rev hang became not so fun because of the rev hang and the boost cutting out between shifts. I think you made a good point about this being one of the best Civics ever made (arguably), but I don't think it's one of the best Si's ever made. It's a good Civic for sure. It's a good Civic Si-lite, so to speak. This is what the Sport should have been, but as an Si, with that badge comes along a series of expectations and heritage for engaging driving experience that Honda used to do so well. I think it hasn't achieved that in this car, but they made a damn fine Civic in it's own right. So bottom line, I think it's a great Civic but not a great Si

      +maximus9401 I 100% agree, its the best Civic. On paper and for real it bests the previous gen in terms of refinement, fit and finish, quality, safety, efficiency, speed, performance. But the new Si is not as fun as the previous gens. Old Honda is dead, gone. Its sad but true and with modern cars its becoming all the same, eco turbos.
      Now, this car feels more sterile than it should and I think thats what people hate. But I think Honda is trying to give it personality, its not a snoozer. About the only cars with more zest are the fords. I find the 6th gen Si more fun and Id rather own that but if someone was looking for a new car this Si is good for what it is, modern Honda Eco fun car.

    I think this car holds a special place in my heart. My dad has one and I learned to drive a manual in it and it’s the first sports car I have ever drove. I look forward to when my dad lets me drive it somewhere once a week because I destroy backroads it’s awesome. The lsd makes it so easy to handle because you don’t have to handle as much underwater and oversteer.
