I was also taught not to blow air on a fresh weld. And never use a coat hanger to fill holes..we used to build race cars years ago. Putting roll cages together and we used an arc welder. Sometimes you’d get a hole from the joints coming together so we just used another rod and filled the space.. always worked well and had good penetration..
Doing great on what was a mess most people would walk away from and say can't be done well done for using your skills to bring this car back to life again
You are correct on the welding information. Ive always said the coat hanger made for some poor weak welds and i got alot of grief for it. Lol im glad you explained that subject to everyone. Congratulations on the success your having with your channel. I enjoy watching
That might be true but in sheet metal application such as body panels the welds are probably 5x stronger than they need to be at the start so having a slightly weaker weld wont really matter theres no flexing anywhere really , now if youre building a bridge or skyscraper then it probably matters .
Yes I would rock on of those stickers on my hard body or toolbox awesome job on the floor pans Dirty Doug keep it up ❤thank u so much for sharing time with us aia the viewers i really do appreciate I hope everyone thinks the same way big dog can't wait for your next adventure

Dough, this is the second time I have viewed your channel. Love it! you, my man are the salt of the earth and should be respected. I look forward to be following you. Hang in there. Some people are butchers and you like to do quality work. Keep the faith brother. Nathan is another man that I feel was somewhat abused on the job. Looking forward to see you two together.
As I said before hammer and dolly the welds while they are hot..it stretches the weld and helps stop panel warpage..35 years as a body repair guy I've learned just a little bit 😉
Get er done ! I enjoy watching you you’re doing good don’t give up I hope you do well! I still watch bad Chad , but I truly enjoy your videos and love your humor keep it up! I’ll be 👀watching !!
Hey Doug, I think in theory you are right; air cooling is probably not the best thing... But since most body work isn't that much about structure, I think guys can get away with it most of the times... But working on a frame is another story; you need a sound weld with good penetration. As far as coat hanger, I guess it depends on the type of coat hanger... Worst case scenario, you would get porosity. Anyway, I agree you'd be better off with stick rods (without the flux) or even better: tig rods. Nice to see you flying on your own!
Hey Doug, I just thought I’d watching your episode on not cooling down your welds with air. I’ve been welding for over 40 years and you’re 1000% correct, also your idea of using a fluxcore rod instead of a hanger is good but the best way to do that would be to buy some ER70S2 welding rod and use that it’s not very expensive at all and that’s the right way to do it. I’ve been saying that for for a long time on channel which I really do not watch anymore since you opened up your channel. If I do watch bad Chad channel, I watch it just for laughs. Whatever happened with you and him I think is for the best for you. You’re a smart guy. Don’t let anybody push you around. Keep them great videos. Have a great day looking forward to seeing you again.
Happy to report I just got through watching ALL your videos! Like what I’ve seen so far. Wishing all the best for the future and look forward to being subscribed all along.
Good advice Doug there is another reason NOT to use coat hangers for filler, the metal used in the coat hanger is "junk" metal plus the wire is also coated with a "varnish" which adds a contaminant into the weld. The welds will not only fail over time but will also "show" through the paint. You live close to the ocean with the Bay of Fundy on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other so the salt content will be very high in the atmosphere contributing to rust. This is why your former employer's vehicles and metal are all prematurely rusting! I would never buy anything that business fabricates as it will not be structurally sound.
>I would never buy anything that business fabricates as it will not be structurally sound. As someone with a background in civil engineering I know a few things about structural steel design - much of what Chad does is a death trap. When he chops cars up he's degrading the integrity of the vehicle. Plus he rarely clean the weld area of paint or rust leading to poor welds. And I agree on the coat hanger. Besides being a poor quality steel, if you have to fill gaps you're a lousy metal worker. I dont think Chad has the skill or patience to cut panels to actually fit before welding. If they don't fit tight, you're only asking for the metal to warp. He also doesn't care about hiding rust or using weldable primer to prevent rust from developing inside areas you can no longer access.
I went to welding school in 1976 and have been welding/fabricating ever since. I've never blown air on a weld and I've never had to use a coat hanger or any filler other than the mig wire.
Dirty Doug Brown this is cool. You put a lot of metal in that floor of the car In a 15min video. Doug you are right a hangar rod isn’t filler rod. A welder can use stick rod and use as filler or bare tig wire. Anyway nice to see you started your own channel. I wish you well. I will be looking for more videos. Doug post videos are good
Your a good man Doug ! Tell the truth , people do and use many things ,but there is a right way and wrong way ! And if your on utube showing people how to do things then do,it right !
If you cool off a weld with air, it will generally cool down slower than if you used water, which can potentially lead to increased stress within the weld and potentially reduce its strength, especially in certain metals, as rapid cooling can cause internal stresses and distortions due to uneven contraction; however, for most applications, air cooling is considered acceptable and is often the preferred method due to its simplicity and lower risk of warping the material.
I like your channel. It entertaining.i meet you at the car show in sydney mines. We talked about working on school buses.I was up that way to thunder in the valley a few weeks back. First time around that area. I really nice place.
I have never cooled my welds down, I use to use a torch like Jim Patterson but never coat hangers, mostly used flux brazing rods they were brass and would hold anything together

Blowing air over the panel will absolutely bring back a warp. You dont blow directly on the weld you blow over it. The coat hangers and crap is 100 percent accurate
Hi Doug after hearing your comment on air I had to read the comments I have been welding 40 years but mainly on bigger stuff building trailers tow bars and even attaching high abs to wagons so not worrying about panels warping although a weld can still pull a structure out of shape but experience goes a long way 👍
Doug i saw you make sils for a van on your earlier video here with nothing but sheet metal and a board.. you sir are special to the point that your 7 sports ive no doubt its going to be perfect and safe...i agree never use air on new glowing welds..
I've always let my welds cool naturally but if I've had to I use a wet sponge . Chad using low grade coat hangers is a recipe for disaster.Keep up the good work Doug.
Well said, Doug, on using cold air on the welds. If the welds are spread apart, you shouldn't need it. And using a coat hanger is just shite. Fair play to you for starting your own channel , keep up the good work 👍
You are quite correct about not force cooling welds with air. They must cool naturally or you are asking for problems in the future. All professional welders know that. Just takes more time to do it right.
Hey Doug, the welding looks good and you are making some good progress! Keep up the good work and you should end up being successful. I miss seeing Nate myself, you could always have him on as a guest and if he does not want to start his own channel you could always see if he wants to go in partners with you. You are correct about cooling welds to quick. I was told that years ago!👍
Hey Doug, glad to see you on your own!
You are one of funniest people I have ever worked with you made it bearable. Fu*king funny.
Exactly right! Don't cool your welds down and yes again, if you want to fill a welding rod is the best option.

Thanks for the advice about air cooling your welds. Never done it cause I dont have a compressor, but it makes sense.
Thank you Doug cooling down welds premature will make them brittle and also get some welding rod hangers are for hanging 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
You are correct on the welding information. Ive always said the coat hanger made for some poor weak welds and i got alot of grief for it. Lol im glad you explained that subject to everyone. Congratulations on the success your having with your channel. I enjoy watching
Correct, coat hangers are higher carbon content to remain stiff, which makes a brittle weld
They make a mild steel filler wire you. Can buy. But you are correct. Same as some of the steel used is not correct also.

Great work Doug , nice to hear true facts about welding. Air and coat hangers so misleading for people wanting to learn.
Mig welding is a brittle weld whether you cool with air or not. You can use coat hangers. They are steel.
Doug, keep it up. Really e joy your videos

Actually a quick trip to Princess auto and a tube of steel tig rods works great for filler. Been using that for years and works great!!
I have used damp towels on large scale welding projects to avoid warping
That's the way I've been taught by experienced, old school welders when I started welding. It's the right way👍
There's also Heat Sinking Compound you can buy at the welding supply or online , But Why Spend the Money when you can just use Wet Towlels
@@Lucky-ou4vz Yup. I've tried that stuff many years ago. I stick with a damp towel.
