Great review! I love BASE MODELS of anything. This checks most of my desires. And the wheels are BEAUTIFUL. They look like real wheels. I rarely adjust my power mirrors. I was very enthusiastic when I first heard of this but the long wait for a built to order has cooled my appeal. Perhaps with more reviews and being actually seeing it in person may reignite my interest

Even if you don't like driving trucks and SUVs or towing (me). A truck like this is fantastic to have on the property when living outside the city. They're useful and this one makes economical sense. So you only use a truck a handful of times a year. Mulch amd plants in the spring. Occasional runs for wood. Towing a trailer here and there. For light and infrequent uses, this truck should last damn near an entire lifetime. It doesn't need to have much in creature comforts to perform the job of a truck well
I super appreciate Alex doing these reviews. I’ll likely never get this truck, although I love the practicality and efficiency. I like my Tacoma too much and need the added capability. I do think there needs to be a smaller segment (thanks Ford and Hyundai) for people who don’t tow or go off road. This also brings up an important point - how have we not had a serious jump in fuel efficiency in mid sized trucks? I would expect that every (or nearly every) mid sized truck should be getting 25-30mpg in the next 5 years. While I’m happy with my 20mpg on both highway and city, I think having trucks being capable of driving ~450 miles on a single standard tank is not a big ask.
The destination charge that isn’t fully about shipping cost but a way to advertise a lower price. With the lack of availability of new models all these vehicles being reviewed on RUclips might as well be concepts for the distance future.

@Kuessemir Indeed, I don't see why Ford insisted on forcing the hybrid nonsense on the buyer at this level. I think it is possible that after the first year they will allow people to buy a basic 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder with a manual transmission in it. Base model or basic trim buyers could care less about hybrid stuff since it is more expensive to maintain them as well and more prone to failures.
The fact that I have to wait till mid 2022 if I place a Maverick order now is ridiculous! Plus considering that it's the first year production and it's cheaply made in Mexico, best to avoid it.
I just did an XL build on the Costco Auto website and manual fold power-adjustable mirrors are available as part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 package that also includes BLIS, a full-size spare and lane-keeping system for $540 MSRP. Why is the 4x8 sheet of plywood the standard still? This is 2021 in America. The new standard should be can it haul Marge and Jan shoulder to shoulder in the back seat with a combined weight of 900lbs.

In a few years you're going to see a ton of small business's driving these. The money saved in gas alone will make the payment and then some.
Yes, and put the stick right on the floor (get rid of the pointless center console to extend knee room), and instead of crew cab, make it extended cab, and add one foot to the bed.
The rear window option for the XL and XLT is NOT powered. It is a manual slide only and no option to get power at all in those lower trims. Only the lariat gets the power rear slide window with the window slider button on the dash underneath the creature comfort settings by the USB ports up front. Also you are incorrect in stating no rear window defroster in any model. The lariat edition does include defroster, it is stated in the owner manual and has been touched on already.
Some people think the $1500 destination charge is a ripoff. It's not. Destination charges have been increasing for the last few years and even more during the pandemic. At $1500 Ford is not making any profit on it.
@@Gio-nl7eg , well usually automakers put on plastic wheel covers over steelies on base cars but that would look worse on a pickup. At least Ford painted these silver. I just ordered mine with the hybrid.. i could not resist the price honestly! this is crazy good value
Impressive for the price but I would wait a couple of years for them to work out the bugs
bingo let the pioneers take the arrows, Ford is putting out low quality product
Sure, but probably will be a lot more expensive then too.
@@timjohnson1199 I'm glad someone else realizes this. Yeah, you'll get some of the kinks ironed out, but with the unique market for vehicles right now, msrp will definitely go up.
@Alex on Autos
*Finally after decades of car makers forgetting "value for the money" as something of real importance to the masses somebody has remembered it! This does appear to be a good value for the money, I'm not as sure about the hybrid aspect of this, they should have just put a small V6 or large 4 in it with a manual transmission that would have probably brought the price down to 18k*
Best buy since the Dodge Grand Caravan ended productuon.
I just wish it had cruise control...
I can't believe they didn't offer it. Really surprising.
Are aftermarket cruise controls still a thing?
I will avoid the first year new vehicle especially by FORD just to be safe to see feedback first
I'd avoid any first year model from anyone outside Toyota, especially American companies (assembled in Mexico)
@@James-il3tq the country of assembly hardly matters the tooling is pretty much all developed in the states. Plus lets not forget all those 80s- early 2000s cars built in the usa which are no longer around.
cruise control Is a must have In my book. So I'll go up a trim. Great review
I like it, but would prefer the XLT due to the interior colors and cruise control. Would actually prefer the steel wheels on the XLT.
Exactly, I like that base look while having the luxuries hidden within
View the interiors of both the XL and XLT closely and you'll note the only difference is colors of fabrics and hard plastics, and the XLT has drop in orange pieces. Overall costs Ford the same to build the interiors of either model. If we want cruise control and power mirrors it costs additional $2285, not a deal.
@@meathead585 Here is what you get for XLT:
The XLT trim will give a lot more luxury features, technology and style; adding ambient interior lighting, power front seats, faux-leather seats, heated steering wheel, heated seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. It includes 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, a power-tailgate lock, power mirrors, and the SecuriCode keyless entry keypad with a perimeter alarm.
Some may not need all those in the XLT, then the price of the trim may not be great for you. But if you do like them, the additional price maybe justifiable...
I really like the XL trim level on this truck. It's what so many people have been asking for for a long time. I think if Ford had a larger availability of the XL's they'd sell like crazy!
Great review! I love BASE MODELS of anything. This checks most of my desires. And the wheels are BEAUTIFUL. They look like real wheels. I rarely adjust my power mirrors. I'm the only driver in my family, so they are a "set them and forget them" item. No rear window defroster is an odd omission. I'd like cruise, but (as with my base 2020 Kia Rio) it isn't a game changer. If it were me, I'd want cruise and rear window defroster and skip the power windows. I despise power windows. See no need for them. Most Fords don't appeal to me, but this one has potential.
All of my Hondas have been base LX models. Less crap to break in the long run. I'm ordering the hybrid XL Maverick for the same reason.
If you're married you're gonna need power mirrors! Trust me!
Why would anyone buy an economy sedan (Civic, Corolla, so on) over this? From practical sense, this is better in every way, and less money.
I see 2 defects in the sidewall of right front tire, very obvious. Will need to check carefully when my XLT is ready.
@Frugal Family Living Thanks for the info, checked and you're correct. Rather not have it my tires tho.
It's cheaply made in Mexico. At such a low price point, you know Ford is cutting a lot of corners.
@@braetonwilson4296 They don't make the tires!
This truck is going to dominate the fleet sales, specifically for cities, utility companies, etc that is only needed for light duty.
Yes, they'll love its simple efficiency. It should be a fairly durable drivetrain.
I was very enthusiastic when I first heard of this but the long wait for a built to order has cooled my appeal. Perhaps with more reviews and being actually seeing it in person may reignite my interest
Saw it today, really great for what it is. But absolutely had the escape quality vibe. Not necessarily bad, but could absolutely see 2500-3500 rebates within 6 months and resale not being great. I’ll keep my 2011 F150 for another year and reassess.
@@ocman11 That's too bad. The Escape's interior feels super cheap, except it isn't. This looks like a must better value, and with that hybrid drivetrain it will be cheap to operate, too.
Thinking of getting the XL, AWD equipped at $27,700- hell of a value and then paint the steelies, maybe even do a 1" lift and larger tires or FX4 at like $33k- this little truck is a good value
Pickups are like blue jeans: even with scratches & patina over time, they are still presentable in American culture.
cvts are like car killers at 80k miles who wants to replace a entire transmission
i dont even look at this car as a american pickup nearly 80% of it is sourced from china like the transmission or hybrid engine.
@@tonymante8759 the hybrid has an eCVT, much different than CVT, very simple design all gears, no pulleys. Similar to what’s in the hybrid Prius that has reliability into the 2-300k miles.
Yeah except this isn’t a truck. 😬
It doesn't need to have much in creature comforts to perform the job of a truck well
Wish Ford had AWD hybrid option. It would have been a perfect utilitarian vehicle.
@@dancheb That would've been great. They probably didn't want an AWD vehicle to be cheaper than the Escape
Don't say the steel wheels 'look pretty good' then they'll charge extra for them lol.
The Maverick is one of the best attempts at manufacturers making an "Honest Vehicle." The steelies are awesome, they should offer body matched steelies.
It seems odd that Ford didn't resurrect the 'Ranchero' name badge for this ute.
And a Mustang is now an SUV.
Racherita
@@TruthFLA Cool Ranch Fordito
Also could have called it a Courier or Durango which were other small Ford trucks.
@@Shakerhood69 they planned to use the courier name, but I don't know why they changed their minds. Plus, FCA already has the Durango name. If Ford used it, they'll be sued. And with the new merger with PSA automotive group, they're bigger than ford now, so any lawsuit like that might run Ford bankrupt.
Great to have a real base model review. But, no standard/ basic cruise control!! Really?!! That's a big negative for me; might have just lost a sale.
No cruise control? Its just software and a couple of buttons! I consider cruise control essential.
I totally agree with you. That really caught my attention as a downside.
It's because they don't really want you to buy the base truck.
Base model is focused toward work-fleets. For consumers, it’s not included so that you move up in trim level. The XL is great as a marketing tool of “under $20k” ..it is not what they want to sell the most of
@@jimthumerzs6981 So true! They just want to fleece everybody with immensely over priced extras, that's where the high percentage profits come from.
I ordered a base XL Hybrid yesterday. No added features. 6 month wait for Hybrid. Exactly what I’ve been looking for. While I love my Frontier, I can’t wait to drive a Ford pickup again since my old Ranger.
those steel rims would look as beautiful as alloy rims if only they will make them a bit wider and painted with color like gun metal ish
Well the beauty of steel wheels is they can be widened. That and a powder coat of your choice would really make it unique.
I'd just add some meatier tires and plastidip the wheels that way if I don't like the color anymore I can go back to the original silver
PlastiDip is your DIY answer.
@@meathead585 painted rims can be cheaply and easily repainted to any color.... i use plasti dip on polished or powder coated alloy rims
@@ALMX5DP Steel wheels are great for a truck they handle pothole better without breaking they are unlikely to crack or get ruined by curbs and the lug nuts tend to stay tight without needing a periodic re-torque. There is a reason police cars and ambulances use steel wheels.
It is missing some things that I would expect to be standard, but I could deal with it. Those steel wheels are the star of the show.
The base is pretty awesome...better mpg than a civic
Not sure about it since my 2016 civic EXT gets 41.6 mpg in mixed driving
@@rafaljankowski2807 40 mpg vs your 41.6 mpg not close enough for you?
I have a Fusion Hybrid and I have no trouble at all beating the window sticker number of 47 mpg. They're always conservative with those numbers. I'm sure this Maverick will be the same way.
@@bermuge1 Well you said it beats civic. Not mine.
@@rafaljankowski2807 good grief
Was gonna buy that Santa Cruz but I might hold out for the XL. I just love that steelie wheel look.
A base model. And only 20K with almost 40mpg. Hurray for that! It would be nice if automakers still offered trucks as 2 seaters or with a "king cab" so the bed was a little longer, but this little truck looks really nice. Monster trucks for > 50K? No thanks.
""king cab" so the bed was a little longer" -- 👍🏻
They could make it even cheaper if they took all the hybrid stuff out and just put a naturally aspirated larger engine in the base model.
@Kuessemir
Indeed, I don't see why Ford insisted on forcing the hybrid nonsense on the buyer at this level.
I think it is possible that after the first year they will allow people to buy a basic 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder with a manual transmission in it. Base model or basic trim buyers could care less about hybrid stuff since it is more expensive to maintain them as well and more prone to failures.
Thank you, great preview, Alex. And thank you Ford for making an affordable truck!
I'm really looking forward to hearing what people say after 3 years of ownership. I really want to love this but I remain skeptical.
The fact that I have to wait till mid 2022 if I place a Maverick order now is ridiculous! Plus considering that it's the first year production and it's cheaply made in Mexico, best to avoid it.
Fleet company managers will love these.
I just did an XL build on the Costco Auto website and manual fold power-adjustable mirrors are available as part of the Ford Co-Pilot360 package that also includes BLIS, a full-size spare and lane-keeping system for $540 MSRP. A manual rear sliding window is available at $155. And as noted in the review, cruise control is not available at any price.
The full-size spare is an attractive extra, as are the safety features. That's good value in a package.
Cruise is standard on the XLT and Lariat trims fyi...
@@markmiller3279 wouldn't that affect MPG by few? It's add weight. Hybrid is designed to be efficient by light weight and regenerative energy
Never had a truck because I like a back seat, years ago virtually all trucks didn't and I like economy vehicles for mpg and initial cost.
I've always had economy hatchbacks but would like something that can say transport a large appliance. So for me this might be the perfect fit for my first truck purchase!
Manie, I never bought a truck before either! Most are too expensive and too big. I like the Maverick so much I bought 2 that I show on my channel.
Love that color...
If I needed a truck this would be pretty awesome.
Why is the 4x8 sheet of plywood the standard still? This is 2021 in America. The new standard should be can it haul Marge and Jan shoulder to shoulder in the back seat with a combined weight of 900lbs.
That's what the bed is for.
Ah! But you can order a moonroof on the XL. I ordered mine early September. Moonroof, spray in liner, and tow hitch, after shipping, taxes, and dealer fees = all in less than $25k. Trying to wait patiently for sometime in 2022… haha
I haven't liked Fords until the 2021 F150. The Maverick is going to be a huge hit. The Santa Cruz is great and better looking but very expensive compared to the Maverick.
Well done Ford with both the Maverick and F150!! And just to get some whining, the Maverick, Santa Cruz, and Ridgeline are trucks!
Base Maverick great price but XL and Lariat models quickly go up Ranger prices especially with addons.
This base model is the best option....definitely

The people who call this "not a real truck" wouldn't have been buyers even if it was body on frame and could tow more. Can we take a second to appreciate ford made a freaking PICKUP that will get 40MPG CITY! This is a game changer for small and medium size business that need a bed (Handymen, Plumbers,Electricians, auto part delivery, heck even myself, my motorcycles only weigh 400lbs) but need to drive a lot and don't want to spend a ton on gas. In a few years you're going to see a ton of small business's driving these. The money saved in gas alone will make the payment and then some.
This specific Maverick is an incredible value!
Its like a truck that actually makes sense to buy.
Perfect towing cap for home shenanigan's
I know it's probably counter-intuitive at this point but I sure would love a manual at that base price
LIKE, times one million!!!!
Yes, and put the stick right on the floor (get rid of the pointless center console to extend knee room), and instead of crew cab, make it extended cab, and add one foot to the bed.
Manual not compatible on hybrid powertrain
@@James-il3tq My assumption would be the OP was talking about the 2.0T engine.
@@James-il3tq Honda insight
The rear window option for the XL and XLT is NOT powered. It is a manual slide only and no option to get power at all in those lower trims. Only the lariat gets the power rear slide window with the window slider button on the dash underneath the creature comfort settings by the USB ports up front. Also you are incorrect in stating no rear window defroster in any model. The lariat edition does include defroster, it is stated in the owner manual and has been touched on already.
No rear window defogger is a strange decision
This is awesome. More truck than most people need. I’d take one for projects around the ranch such as hauling hay, tools etc.
❤️ the base model💯
That first optioned Maverick that you just showed is the way I would go. Those MPGs and a decent amount of standard equipment has my attention.
No cruise control is insulting
Some people think the $1500 destination charge is a ripoff. It's not. Destination charges have been increasing for the last few years and even more during the pandemic. At $1500 Ford is not making any profit on it.
I think the steel wheel looks cheap but you can just use the money you've saved to get different rims!
The $20K appeal of the truck is aimed at people who don't care about having alloy wheels.
I like the steel wheels. They're so much less likely to get damaged, and they look OK
@@Josh-179 I mostly agree but they could’ve made somethinngggg better than those old looking rims lol
@@Gio-nl7eg , well usually automakers put on plastic wheel covers over steelies on base cars but that would look worse on a pickup. At least Ford painted these silver. Alex is about the only reviewer I trust
$20K for such utility? Ford is killing it.

It’s entirely possible that this will be the Scion Xb of the future. The Plymouth Duster of the future. Young people will flock to this, and dress it up, and it will become iconic.
I would drive this before a Ridgeline. Nothing wrong with the Ridgeline, but the Maverick has that cool utilitarian look specially with steelies, plus is a hybrid. This truck is going to dominate the fleet sales, specifically for cities, utility companies, etc that is only needed for light duty.
Agreed. They already sell a lot of Transit Connects to fleets, and the low price and efficiency of this will be very attractive.

Well, maybe not tomorrow, but I would give it a good look.
All vehicles that have drive by wire throttles, which it does, can add CC for pretty much no cost. Please do it.
This truck will look a lot bigger when Redline Reviews reviews it. 😂
Omgsh Sofyan? I swear that guy is a car snob. He can't stand base model cars and is very picky on features even when it make no sense as far as cost goes ie no manual transmission option on upper trim level, no dual climate control, no sunroof, no power seat and such.
