Yes, I understand how all this will work but when you have severe panic disorder and you’re in the store and you are alone and there’s no safeguards in place like a family member with you it is debilitating. Truly, I have tried exposure. A few times I was successful twice and then the third time panic I was on the edge of having a panic attack and how do I deal with having debilitating panic attack where my body feels like I’m not in control of it. How do you manage to look past that?
Hello! Thank you very much! However, we cannot always stay there until the anxiety calms down a little bit. It's a good thing to do but sometimes, it's impossible. If I am very anxious each time I go down the stairs, I cannot stay there until I feel better. Because there are a lot of people and I might be late... I don't have time to stay there. However, I noticed it goes better and better because I use those stairs each day. I'm even more confident now than I was a few months ago.
Its likely that your phobia is abit more specific than holidays. It could be fear of being a long distance from your home? Fear of germs? Fear of your family being hurt? You need to identify exactly what is causing the anxiety.
Do people get more anxious when tired/exhausted? Because it's the complete opposite for me. Especially when I travel. I eventually get so exhausted that I no longer have the energy for anxiety.
1:00 "Exposure therapy isn't working!" 3:52 Do I need to feel 'better' in order for the exposure to be successful? 4:42 The goal of exposure therapy is to stay in situations until anxiety calms down. It's not necessary for it to progressively decrease each time. 9:39 Normalisation. Exposure doesn't need to be a complicated production. Just go and do the exposures as many times as possible. Get more involved in life. 28:55 I am trying, doing, struggling... notice these active/doing words. DARE teaches NON action. 29:38 Fatigue is more activity in the emotional brain 47:36 We don't need to be calm to be safe. Thoughts and fear and sensations are NOT dangerous. Act as if where you are IS safe. 49:40 Anxiety is 'just' sensitisation.
