A line heater, also commonly referred to as an indirect fired heater, is a piece of equipment that is commonly found at or near the wellhead or Gas Transmit Line and of which the main purpose is to heat up the well-stream or the pipeline fluid.

Are these usually used before or after the initial separator?

They are normally the first piece of production equipment that the fluid stream goes through after it leaves the tree. That is unless there is sand. In that case there might be a sand separator before the line heater.
