Nice reaction. The Jig of Life can stand on its own musically but lyrically won’t make much sense out of context. It is part of ‘The Ninth Wave’ concept suite on the second half of the Hounds of Love album, forming part of a 7-part song cycle of closely related songs. The concept is of a woman in the water with just a life jacket at risk of drowning, and the stream of consciousness she experiences while waiting to be rescued. As she slowly loses her battle to stay awake she begins to dream/hallucinate and have out of body experiences. The Jig of Life is the third of three songs in which the past, present and future feature in her hallucinations. In The Jig of Life she is visited by her future self who is begging her to stay alive so that she too, along with her future children, can live.
Glad you enjoyed it, just to give you a little bit more context WRT this particular song, this track is from the "Hounds Of Love" album which actually consists of two parts. The "A side" has all the commercial songs like "Running Up That Hill", Cloudbusting, "Hounds Of Love", etc. However the "B side" is entitled "The Ninth Wave" which is a concept piece a suite of linked songs starting with "And Dream Of Sheep" which finds the character that Kate is portraying in a deadly situation and "Jig Of Life" is one of the songs in suite. If you want to know precisely what this situation is then for her 2014 concert residency "Before The Dawn" Kate recorded a live version of "And Dream Of Sheep" for which there's an official music video. If you get the chance the entire "The Ninth Wave" is well worth a listen. The "Hounds Of Love" does strike the perfect balance between commercial and experimental. BTW it won't be any sort of surprise that parts of "The Jig Of Life" was recorded in Ireland using local musicians.
Kate was always one to involve her family in her music as much as possible. Her oldest brother, John Carder, is the guy narrating the poem in the latter part of this song, and her other brother, Paddy, is playing the Dijeridu. Paddy provides backing vocals and plays various instruments on many of her other songs. Her mum appears in the ‘Suspended in Gaffa’ music video. Her dad speaks on ‘The Fog’.
Hey Haniers have another sugesstion for Brian Eno,s 2nd album when he was still experimentaiy rocking but in a very interesting aaaand rocking way .It,s frrommhis albume Taking Tiger Mountain (by strategy) THe song is MOTHER WHALE EYELESS very Listenable
I haven't seen the both of you so animated. It made me wonder what was going on with your feet. Cynthia, you don't like ,Kate Bush!!!! One of the things about, Kate Bush is that just about all of her songs have a meaning.
Hounds Of Love is Kate's best album for me. This is a great track and it's not even in my top five. Regarding your Canadian content, have you listened to any Broken Social Scene yet?
@@hanierfamily My personal favourite is 7/4 (A Shoreline) with lead vocals by Feist (who is a recognised solo artist in her own right). I'd also recommend Forced To Love, Hotel, Cause = Time and a solo track from guitarist Brendan Canning, Churches Under The Stairs. Other Canadian bands I would recommend are The Besnard Lakes (try the track Necronomicon) and Spiral Beach (try Teddy Black).
I didn't think anyone ever reacted to this song. It's one of her absolute best in my opinion. I just love it.

That solo violin at the end is as hypnotic to me like a dervish dance

Honestly, I (Chris) was trying not to tap. The camera stand seems to feel every wiggle some days.

No, we haven't. Which song would you recommend?
