Kate Bush explained the song in an 1985 interview like this: "It's about a relationship between a man and a woman. They love each other very much, and the power of the relationship is something that gets in the way. It creates insecurities. It's saying if the man could be the woman and the woman the man, if they could make a deal with God, to change places, that they'd understand what it's like to be the other person and perhaps it would clear up misunderstandings. You know, all the little problems; there would be no problem."
I feel like this could be expanded as a challenge to the traditional relationship of men as the breadwinners and women as the homemakers and the complications that arise with the unevenness of power in that dynamic. Regardless of whether that's applicable or not, I love this song and the meaning behind it. Thank you for sharing.
Consider the significance of a hill. The top of a hill had literally been important to people throughout pre-history and history, While seemingly symbolic - reaching the top - you know they used to ritually worship or even crown chieftains and kings up on top of hills, i.e. Cnoc na Teamhrach, Motte-and-bailey, etc ... a hill is more than an inspiring view. ... from a hill your sight is extended further outwards in all directions of your surrounding - it's clarity. Anyway, reminds me of "Climbing up on Solsbury Hill" ... Peter Gabriel understood.
It is a shame that Kate is not well known in America. But in the U.K, throughout Europe, Australia, and Japan, Kate is an icon. She is a true original, there's just no one like her - a musical genius. By the time Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour discovered her in 1973 at the age of 15, she had already written over 250 songs. A brilliant and innovative composer, lyricist, singer (with a 4-octave voice), pianist, dancer, mime, choreographer, record producer, video producer & director - she even helped develop the first cordless headset microphone that she used on tour. Hugely influential and highly respected by musicians worldwide, Kate was one of the first female musicians to take total production and artistic control over her work. She’s been a real pioneer for women in the music industry for the last 40 years. First woman to have a #1 self-written song in the UK charts. First woman to have an album debut at #1. First woman to have a Top 10 album in each of the last four decades. She has had 25 Top 40 singles, 10 albums on the Top 10 Albums Charts, nominated 13 times for British Phonographic Industry awards and 3 Grammy awards, an Ivor Novella Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music, and appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for her honored services to music. In September of 2020 Kate was honored as a fellow of the prestigious Ivors Academy for songwriters and composers. In 2014 she returned to the stage and sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minutes (a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). Her 22 performances were highly acclaimed (named as "the #1 live music event of the year" by many music publications) and she became the first woman to have 8 albums in the top 40 charts at the same time (third behind only Elvis and The Beatles).

She was asked by Fleetwood Mac to open for their 1979 American tour but she declined as she was exhausted from her own European tour. Kate is one of the great geniuses of the last four decades. Almost every female music artist in the last twenty years owes much to Kate, who was a true pioneer. Check out Breathing Night of the Swallow Babooshka The Sensual World But most of all, I highly recommend her 7-part epic masterpiece, The Ninth Wave. In the last
FYI for anyone confused with the reference to "The Ninth Wave" it's the 2nd half of "Hounds Of Love" starting with the song "And Dream Of Sheep", ia concept piece, a suite of linked songs. The quickest way to understand the concept is to watch Kate's music video of her singing live "And Dream Of Sheep" which Kate created for her 2014 concert residency performances, you will then have an idea of what the situation is, then you can listen to the entire "The Ninth Wave" as it features on the album. Alternatively you can just go directly to the album and watch the music video afterwards the choice is yours.
Since Kate has created such an outstanding body of work, I'm going to add.. 📌Cloudbusting and "Hounds Of Love" from the "Hounds Of Love" album 📌"This Woman's Work" and "Love And Anger" from "The Sensual World" 📌Army Dreamers from "Never For Ever" Then the following from her earliest albums 📌Wow and "Hammer Horror" from Lionheart 📌"Wuthering Heights" and "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" from "The Kick Inside" Then... 📌"Sat In Your Lap", "The Dreaming" and "Suspended In Gaffa" from "The Dreaming"
When this masterpiece was last in the UK charts, I was still at school, as a teenager in 80's Britain (one of Thatcher's Children....). I daily thank God that I grew up in that period, it was awesome !!!
80's synth-pop is EVERYTHING. The song is about 2 people having completely different experiences of the same thing. One having it easy, the other in pain.
Man, Lex is beyond. I’m 59. A journalist. I read, and writes, reviews every day and have for decades. Lex’s few words: “it’s like swimming laps in an Olympic pool. And there’s nothing like chlorine.” Are you kidding me???? That is an unbelievably accurate, colourful , description of this song that no one - not the NYTimes not the NME, could ever hope for. Lex is much greater than youtube. I’m watching this incredible talent that deserves a bigger platform.
Kate was one of the first musicians to use the Fairlight, a music synthesiser that can be programmed with any sound, and she uses it to good effect on this and other tracks and albums. You can't just listen to one Kate Bush song to get a feel of what she does as an artist, because she's so incredibly versatile. Maybe react to a whole album to get a more rounded idea of who she is and what she does-- I promise you won't be disappointed.

Ohhhhh KATE BUSH 👍👍👍👍👍👍 Me and my Sister & my Father we are a fan of KATE BUSH !!! Thank you Brad & Lex !!!!! Good night and Good Week-end GOD BLESS YOU
Fantastic to see Kate get more attention! TY! I get tired of espousing the greatness of Kate Bush...been doing it for so long but she's worth it. Some people will connect with the music's power, beauty, madness, mayhem and sheer Originality and others won't. I can say its definitely worth hearing another tune. Her discography is huge and varied. I'd recommend Sensual World, Cloudbusting or Hounds of Love or ... or.. frankly its hard to go wrong. Just drop the needle, as we used to say.
The incomparable Kate Bush. This song is about two people in love swapping places so they could experience the other person's point of view emotionally and physically. As in so many Kate Bush songs, there could also be hidden sexual references. I think she uses metaphors like running up buildings or running up hills to describe physical erections. In the climax to the album Aerial, after a day of wandering in the English countryside and swimming naked in the moonlit sea, the lovers return to their house and bed. where they go 'up on the roof' and watch the 'light climbing up the aerial'. In Running Up That Hill, she says 'See how deep the bullet lies', this could refer to emotional hurt done to the other person but it could also describe the sexual act; this would explain why she says 'It doesn't hurt me'. Hounds of Love is often considered her greatest album, but my personal favourite is Aerial; it's a masterpiece.
David Bowie once said, 'you have the work, you have the observer (audience) and Art is what happens in the grey space in between. Bowie himself was delighted in people showing him things in his works he had not seen. Whether or not Kate was making sexual references, the Art is in the grey space.
This song in a nutshell sums up the genius/brilliance of Kate Bush, she's a one off. Nobody else can probably compare. A true Legend and a National Treasure.
It's a lazy quote, but to me Kate Bush is basically the female David Bowie, equally talented and inspiring and a complete one-off creative genius. I was lucky enough to get tickets to see her in London a number of years ago, and it's still one of the best gigs of my life. Her Mother was Irish and she spent quite a lot of time in Ireland over the years too, and there is quite a lot of Irish influence in her music too! I'm sure this won't be the last video of hers you react to. Wuthering Heights, Cloudbursting, Hounds of Love etc... are all truly amazing songs!
Oh man, Kate Bush! Many of my guy friends had major crushes on her and Souxie Soux. Kate was gorgeous and an amazing talent. High school wouldn't have been the same without her music. Lots to explore down that rabbit hole!
Finally Kate Bush! She is so creative and revolutionary. The Kate Bush rabbit hole is deeeep! One slight caution though. It often takes people a few listens to "get" her songs. That happened to me when first listening to the album, "The Dreaming". At first I was like "this is...odd". Now I think its pure genius and its one of my favorites.
For me, this song is forever entangled with the book "Noughts and Crosses" as I read that as a child holidaying in France as my dad would play all his favourite songs, including Kate Bush and this song just resonated with me and the book. It's based in an alternate reality where historically white people were subjugated by black populations into slavery and it is a Romeo and Juliet between a white guy and a black lady
Kate Bush released her first single when I was about 18yo she's about the same age as me I had the first 3 albums and the ep . I still listen to them. Favourite song MOVING .
In addition to her being a one-of-a-kind brilliant musician and artist, the other thing that endears me to Kate Bush is her personality. As a long time fan (I first saw her on Saturday Night Live in December of 1978 and was mesmerized), I have watched, listened to, or read nearly every interview, documentary, and article done on her. She is a fearless performer, but off the stage she is a shy, intelligent, down-to-earth, normal person (who loves to do the housework and gardening), shuns the spotlight, and is still amazed at all the accolades she receives. It is a universal consensus from people who have met her and talked to her that she is an incredibly humble, gracious, sweet, kind, witty, generous, caring, and all around wonderful human being. There is an often repeated phrase that people say about her (fans, critics, fellow musicians, etc.): "everybody loves Kate."
Brings me so much happy that you're reacting to Kate. Running Up That Hill was the first song I heard of hers when I was a senior in high school. I had to special order her album, Hounds of Love at the record store in my hometown. From that record on I was hooked, I ordered all the rest and have loved her ever since.
Funny how a lot of artists from all genres love Kate Bush. Also rappers (2Pac, Outkast, etc). She's highly talented , very influential. Great voice, dancer, performer. Big influence on artists like Bjork, Tori Amos, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Karen O), Santigold, etc.
JenErik I've been a hardrock/bluesrock fan since 1968, but there's just something about Kate. I had to have all of her albums. I was amazed to find some of my old heroes contributing. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and of course David Gilmour. She knows when a particular song needs a great guitar sound. Terrific producer.
Listening to artists as diverse as Big Boi from Outkast, Tricky and Johnny Rotten absolutely gush about her is a guilty pleasure of mine. There's a great short form documentary on her here in RUclips that's worth watching.
Since most people viewing this now are relating this to "Stranger Things", I just want to add that this song was perfect for *that* scene. It may have more impact if you connect the two. Very powerful and moving in the scenario.

I begged for "Running Up That Hill" to be played at her funeral because when I was like 3 or 4, she'd often sing me to sleep with that song.

Kate Bush is one of those artists that you have to watch the video. She is a composer, choreographer, dancer, musician, singer, and producer. Her product is all of it. just another great 80's song, still sounding good in 2022! I am a rock/metal fan myself, but the thing with the 80's at the time was that every single day a Tsunami of good song was coming out, either, pop or disco or metal/rock, it was a musical era that will never be achieved again in the future! Trust me I was so happy to be a teenager in those days..

Kate is an amazing creative artist. He videos are amazing. This womans work is a must to listen to
You hit gold discovering Kate Bush...enjoy your journey.
WATCH THE VIDEO! Not only a truly talented musician, she’s a beautiful dancer.
Kate is one of the great geniuses of the last four decades. Almost every female music artist in the last twenty years owes much to Kate, who was a true pioneer. Check out
Breathing
Night of the Swallow
Babooshka
The Sensual World
But most of all, I highly recommend her 7-part epic masterpiece,
The Ninth Wave.
In the last
FYI for anyone confused with the reference to "The Ninth Wave" it's the 2nd half of "Hounds Of Love" starting with the song "And Dream Of Sheep", ia concept piece, a suite of linked songs.
📌Cloudbusting and "Hounds Of Love" from the "Hounds Of Love" album
📌"This Woman's Work" and "Love And Anger" from "The Sensual World"
📌Army Dreamers from "Never For Ever"
Then the following from her earliest albums
📌Wow and "Hammer Horror" from Lionheart
📌"Wuthering Heights" and "The Man With The Child In His Eyes" from "The Kick Inside"
Then...
Kate the most unique, Kate the angel, Kate the diviner, the rainbow after the storm
Ohhhhh KATE BUSH 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Me and my Sister & my Father we are a fan of KATE BUSH !!!
Thank you Brad & Lex !!!!!
Good night and Good Week-end
GOD BLESS YOU
Genius. She is amazing. I could not love an artist more. I cry when I hear her voice.
I think you are getting way way too deep into a Freud-esque explanation here.
David Bowie once said, 'you have the work, you have the observer (audience) and Art is what happens in the grey space in between. Bowie himself was delighted in people showing him things in his works he had not seen. Whether or not Kate was making sexual references, the Art is in the grey space.
You are right and the Official Video really endorses that.
I LOVE Kate Bush... She's so talented, great voice. Her last album which had a huge gap from the previous, was thankfully not a let down
50 Words For Snow is an awesome album
Love it. Kate Bush is a legend.
I had such a crush on Kate back in the 80's
From what I know about Brad’s musical tastes (Alanis, Bjork), I’m predicting Kate Bush is going to be right up his alley!
Frankly, I can't think of a song with lyrics that don't fit Brad and Lex better than this song.
that voice the crafting of the song ..the lyrical drama...amazing artist ..kate bush
This song in a nutshell sums up the genius/brilliance of Kate Bush, she's a one off. Nobody else can probably compare. A true Legend and a National Treasure.
Everyone: LOVE!
Lex: SWIMMING POOL!
lol
There are so many extraordinary songs by Kate Bush. She's a one off. Unique. A genius.
This song just went to No1 because it features in Stranger Things 4 released at the wkend ;)
I highly recommend her song Cloudbusting.
Totally unique, totally brilliant Kate is a genius.
Kate Bush released her first single when I was about 18yo she's about the same age as me I had the first 3 albums and the ep . I still listen to them. Favourite song MOVING .
Kate Bush is worth the deep dive. She’s brilliant.
Absolutely, Kate Bush, always
Finally you’ve got to Kate Bush
It's funny how many metal artists love Kate Bush. I first heard of her through Cronos, the vocalist/bassist of black metal pioneers Venom.
@@warrenbridges1891 I'm only vaguely familiar with her, but she seems to be damn special. I should dig into her a bit more.
@@jeffreekoch9298 I can automatically see how she would have influenced Amos and Bjork for sure.
When this song started playing in THAT scene, I almost instantly started bawling and screaming "RUN!!!!" at the TV
@@LilRocker2005 Ive known Kate Bush for years because of my parents but this song to me I cant help disconnect now because of the deeper meanings it was used with. I honestly love Kate Bush so much
@@xaoc6084 I always got looked at kind of weird for enjoying her music when I was in school, especially "Lionheart", "Hounds of Love" and "The Sensual World" which are still to this day three of my all time favorite albums as well.
After my grandmother passed, I had a very dark period in my life and the only thing that really kept my heart lifted was the "Hounds of Love" album. I begged for "Running Up That Hill" to be played at her funeral because when I was like 3 or 4, she'd often sing me to sleep with that song.
@@LilRocker2005 Aww that is truly beautiful to have such a close connection with a song. I am sorry for your loss. Music really does have an indescribable way of connecting to our souls. Kate Bush I kind of see as an oddity just because she is so unique but I do find her voice angelic.
Kate Bush is one of those artists that you have to watch the video. She is a composer, choreographer, dancer, musician, singer, and producer. Her product is all of it.
I always thought of this song meaning as a struggle, to keep going, to communicate, to love and feel a relationship. Anyway, love the song! She does one called Ribberband Girl that kind of has the same message, but more fun and updeat.
Kate Bush is the next level of human evolution.
And to think how young she was when she wrote and performed 'Wuthering Heights'. Crazy good.
@@rk41gator She's amazing.
@@rk41gator That was the last song she wrote before the first album was recorded. When she wrote "Man With The Child In His Eyes" off the same album, she was only 13 years old.... and it won her a recording contract at 16. Now THAT'S crazy
David Gilmour from Pink Floyd executive produced and played guitar on a couple of tracks from this Kate Bush album.
Kate Bush was/is a global success, although in America she failed to break. She is considered very highly on the music scene and is the first woman to have eight albums in the Official Albums Chart at the same time. If you're new to her music it can be a slow burn experience. IMO she is one of the greatest artists that we have today. This Womans Work also covered by Maxwell is a great place to start.
Well now she is successful in America
I can't believe it... Brad was moving at a song! 😄
Such a classic eighties song with beautiful covers by Placebo or Within Temptation.
Any future Kate Bush song reactions - please WATCH THE VIDEO. She was a very interesting video artist as well as a genius musician and singer.
Kate Bush is amazing. She was massively underrated for a long time. Try 'Wuthering Heights', the hit that launched her.
The official Kate Bush videos are worth watching. Most involve dance (Kate is very passionate about dance, and feature her on the dances) and add another artistic aspect to the songs, including this one.
This song is Big Boi’s favorite track of all time! He loves Kate Bush and I think it’s for good reason she is a musical genius, check out Wuthering Heights it’s a real trip and she wrote it when she was 15! David Gilmour from Pink Floyd discovered her and knew she was a phenom from a young age
Dude, just stated this as well. It's incredible how far he influences reach. And rightfully so..
That's how I found out about this song
An all-time classic. Some great covers of this out there, too.
Kate Bush and Bjork are my favorite two female artists - no question. Elizabeth Fraser and FKA Twigs a close second. Bush is a genius.
This Woman's Work from her is amazing.
LOVE AND ANGER is a BANGER of a song she released int the 90's that is BEYOND Underrated and Definitely worth a Reaction!
Finally! This woman is a flat out genius and her catalogue is diverse and extensive. Was discovered by Dave Gilmour of Pink Floyd.and has influenced so many artists. Just brilliant.
The video is brilliant too.
David Gilmore was her partner.
Thanks for reviewing this! Kate Bush is an awesome talent. If you want to hear more showcasing of her voice, you've got to do "This Woman's Work".
interesting you reviewed this just prior to it being used in Stranger things. Its now #1 on US itunes & every itunes worldwide. Its such an 80s classic thats so unique. In the UK its almost an anthem & was even played at the 2012 London Olympic opening ceremony as a British classic.
Actually Closing Ceremony - there were some rumours that Kate would make a personal appearance, instead she created a 2012 mix of the song that was played
just another great 80's song, still sounding good in 2022! I am a rock/metal fan myself, but the thing with the 80's at the time was that every single day a Tsunami of good song was coming out, either, pop or disco or metal/rock, it was a musical era that will never be achieved again in the future! Trust me I was so happy to be a teenager in those days..
Finally you've discovered our Best Female Singer Songwriter of all time IMO Kates totally unique, you've got some great music of Kates to indulge in
I remember this song coming out as a child, and it STILL gives me chills. Timeless and nostalgic ❤
kate, another amazing woman who lit up my childhood with her amazing music, keep on with these great selections fam ;)
For some reason this song used to scare the hell out of me as a kid. Just so eerie!
Kate Bush was a ballet dancer and both her music and her physical expression are so closely linked. Please check more of her music but you must watch her videos. They are part of the fairy world of Kate Bush.
Brad, Kate Bush singing the track called "Wow". That'll blow your socks off.
Love Kate she wrote some amazing songs, man with a child in his eyes.
Hounds of Love is one of the few truly perfect albums. Beautiful and evocative from beginning to end.
Been watching you guys for a while and you (Brad) smiling at the start like when you heard Delores and Alanis made me chuckle. Her voice (Kate’s) will give those smiles for sure. Try This Woman’s Work (Maxwell covered it). You won’t be disappointed
Literally the favorite song of Big Boi from Outkast. There's a video on RUclips of him gushing over it and Kate Bush... pretty cool how far her influences spread.
This whole album, The Hounds Of Love, is fantastic! 👍🔥🔥🔥
This reaction means so much more because it was recorded and released weeks before this songs recent uptick in popularity!! This is dope
Neo-soul R&B singer, Maxwell covered one of her songs in the 2000s. She's a highly respected singer. Very original, like Bjork. Both have amazing voices and unique music and videos.
I've heard this song a few times, but never really paid attention. Her voice is amazing. I laughed when Brad said, "I don't know" and then the outro started. :D
Before Bjork there was Kate Bush, a completely unique artist with a great back catalogue. Woman’s work, Don’t give up, Army Dreaming, and Cloudbusting are musts
Dear LORD! They are NOTHING alike...Kate wishes.
@@Digital_Ghost_ I truly don't care. Doesn't change my opinion. And opinions are something we are all still entitled to, at least until the Supreme Court decides to shoot that down too.
Crazy that y’all listened to this so recently and then Stranger Things season 4 comes and makes it a chart topper once again ! We love to see it
