  • In this video we're comparing Kate Bush and Pat Benatar's renditions of Kate Bush's original 'Wuthering Heights. We honestly had no idea Pat Benatar had a version of this song until this request was made. We're quite interested in what Pat and her band did with this. Please tell us who you think did it better. Enjoy!

    This was the debut single of Kate Bush recorded in one take when she was 18. It was odd when Pat did it two years later. Both versions are admirable & Teenage Kate gets my vote 🗳 .

      @SPKdesign1 Most likely as Kate's early records were only available on import in the states. Pats label buried the track on Side 2 so 🤷 they realized it was not a potential hit for her. I had the original Kate 7" but had sold the album.

    I had pat benatars first LP with this song on it and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Later, I read she was wanting to be an opera singer and trained for that. Then it made sense, she had a wide vocal range and expressed that with this song.

    Well ... I didn't know this Pat Benatar version until now. It's good ... but nothing compares to Kate Bush ! She's got something so Special in her singing... the feeling ... and the original arrangement is just perfect ! That's it.

    For most Americans at the time, Benatar’s recording would’ve been their first exposure to this song. Kate Bush only had very niche exposure in the US while Pat Benatar’s Crimes of Passion was a massive hit album in America. I like that she gave it a rock edge and stayed true to her style while not changing the song all that much.

    Kate re-recorded her vocal for her greatest hits 'the whole story'. Her voice had matured and is even better than her amazing teenage version. Amusingly she has never read the novel and yet the song has its atmosphere. It was brave of Pat to tackle such an iconic song and her vocal is so good, although the instrumentals are n't as arresting as Kate's. I prefer Kate's just because it's so etheral.

    I'd never heard Pat Benetars cover before.....it was good to be fair,but for me Kate wins it....her quintessential English voice fits perfectly into a quintessential English novel,which is what the song is about. It conjurs up images of a cold night on the Yorkshire Moors.....believe me it can be a bleak place in winter......and that sums up Kate Bush ,more than just a songwriter ....theatrical,well read,intelligent......an amazing artiste.

    Why choose? With this song I never could,I just hear each version depending on my mood. Kate is unique,she was the first weirdo as far as I can remember. The weirdness in her vocals in this song is deliberate,she wants to sound like a ghost. We have to always remember that she was wholesome artist, theatricals are built-in in her music. Pat on the other hand,had a voice that could have skyrocketed her into the rock pantheon,she just chose different things for her life. Both amazing. Btw the way Pat says "Kathy" the last time,just blows my mind,every time. Same every time Kate says "Heathcliff".

  • @georgeharris6851

    Kate uses a head voice for her version, and Pat uses a chest voice for hers. That makes them different interpretations and much different sounds. I like both, but I could listen to Pat's version more, because too much head voice can sound irritating to me.

  • @Aviyaytor
    @Aviyaytor 3 месяца назад +4

    I think I may have to read the book Wuthering Heights, because I think Kate captured Cathy, the youthful, lost, ghost pleading for her soul to be revealed to Heathcliff? I may be off, but the music video shows much much more than the voice. Case in point, the first time I heard KBs version, I thought it shrill. After seeing the video, I see a youthful woman taken way before her time, and trying desperately to communicate with her lover. That’s what I felt anyway, and may be off base here. Again, I haven’t read the book yet.
    Now Pat Benatar’s version - this is just beautiful music to my ears, and I could hear Pat singing any time of day and know she will never disappoint. I understand KBs version is wonderful, but Pat’s seems to capture her love of the song in her vocals.Tears come to my eyes when Pat sings this song if I’m in a particularly reflective mood. My hat tip respectfully and gratefully goes to Pat.

    Kate every time! But if you find the vocals to be a bit shrill Cynthia, then you need to listen to the 1986 version which is on the album 'The Whole Story' (and the B side to Experiment IV) Kate re-recorded the vocals for a "more mature sound" and there is some great guitar work too, give it a listen when you get time I'm sure you'll like it.

      Yes, that 'New Vocal' version from '86 is great, too! Also because of the much improved drum sound. Thank you for this comparison, I would always go for Kate, since as soon as I saw the White Dress version of the music video, I was hooked. I feel that Kate's vocal rises above the music more and in addition to Kate's amazing "one take" vocal performance, also have to consider the usual song structure, key changes and timing changes it's so different to anything that came before it. I feel that the Pat Benatar version plays it safe. The harpsichord sounding instrument is actually a Celeste (also known as a bell-piano).
    I do have another suggestion involving a song by Kate and that would be "This Woman's Work" compared to Maxwell's cover version.

    Thanks for a really enjoyable reaction video especially from someone who by their own admission doesn't particularly like Kate's younger voice (deliberately made even higher by impersonating a ghost in the song). And for me there really is no comparison between these two versions... Kate's version wins hands down every day.
    While I like and respect Pat Benatar a lot anyone trying to cover a song like "Wuthering Heights" has real issue to contend with - because while the song is utterly utterly beautiful, its essential oddness can't be denied. It is 'odd' and sits in its own place in music and so try to cover it successful and still make it your own you really have to change some of the things that while 'odd. made it the song that it is. And for me, in Pat's case all of the changes she made to it were all changes that were just not on a part with the original and so the cumulative effect of those changes just gradually leaves a little bit farther and farther behind the original version.
    I love Kate's younger voice and stand with John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) who called it 'beauty beyond compare' but I do get it that she isn't for everyone. For me a far better comparison would be between Kate's original version and her own later version from her 1986 compilation album "The Whole Story" where she sings in a lower deeper voice. Comparing the younger Kate to the older Kate, that would be a really good "who did it better" reaction video.

      @@hanierfamily Ha, if only older Kate and younger Kate could fight each other... younger Kate would win even though it was once reported that the older Kate kicked a paparazzo right up the jacksy ... meaner in the clinches I reckon.
      Her two versions sound more different than I would have thought even though it is called only a 'new vocal' (the vocal being a little bit lower and Kate interweaving more vocals into the outro). For me personally the original wins out, but even I have to admit that for about the last minute to 90 seconds the latter version probably edges it and it probably does showcase that gorgeous Ian Bairnson guitar solo better.

    I now know of three studio recordings of this 78 Kate Bush original song. First is the Kate Bush version from her debut album, second is her own re-recorded vocal from her compilation album from 1986, The Whole Story. Then there is this great cover by Pat Benatar.
    First place goes to the 1986 Kate version, she herself said that on the original she was just a bit too young and she still had some things to learn about putting the right emotion into it. That 86 version is perfect.
    Second is the 1978 original. Okay, she was still a 18-19 year old girl. But she invented it, it's the original forever. It was groundbreaking when it was released. Plus, even so young, she totally owned the song and the story feels a lot more real.
    Third is Pat Benatar. She definitely can sing. But when the full band sets in, she drops to a lower key. I understand that she wants to sing it in the key that suits her best. I am pretty sure they tried the original key first but discovering it was not her key. But a lot of the atmosphere gets lost, both by the key and the way the band performs it. The band and Pat are absolutely great but this is a cover. And I presume that the band needed to express themselves in their own way. It sounds generic and there are lots of singers that can match Pats version.

    Oh yes... Emily Brontë's 1847 Wuthering Heights. There've been numerous film adaptations over the years. My favorites are the most recent film in 2022 starring Jet Jandreau and Bryan Ferriter, which is pretty faithful at telling the entire story. Followed by the 1992 film with Juliet Binoche and Ralph Fiennes, it too brings the entire novel to life. Then the 1970 film with Anna Calder-Marshall and Timothy Dalton, wherein the connection between the characters feels genuine, and the 1939 film starring Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier, a bit over dramatic for today perhaps, but I like Olivier's old school hardline portrayal of Heathcliff. Then there is the 2008 Mini Series, while not truly faithful to the book, it is one of Tom Hardy's best roles playing as Heathcliff.
    As for Kate Bush's original version of Wuthering Heights, while I love her song Running Up That Hill, admittedly, and with all due respect to Kate as an artist, sadly, I've never been a fan of her original. Not because of the song, on the contrary, it is simply that I do not prefer Kate's high-pitched version. So naturally, being a huge fan of Pat Benatar, when she came along and made her cover version of Kate's song, well... that's when I was finally able to fall in love with it. I know, how biased of me. Cheers!

    You can understand the genius of Kate Bush and what she did with this song. In terms of range, this song is one of the most difficult to pull off solidly. Kate's version, back in the mid 70's...God I miss those days...was unique in the sense that when someone first heard it their eyebrows would raise in the sense of "this is interesting". As opposed to today, where I heard a few that heard Kate's version for the first time say that they thought the voice was "cartoon like" and talked as if it was synthesized on a higher level. A relative of mine put it in a way that I cannot argue with. When she first heard it (and keep in mind that Pat's version wasn't out yet) it almost sounded like Tiny Tim was singing it. With all due respect, Tim was quite a talent himself and did have great vocal range. Whether you liked him or not. Just as Kate Bush...whether you liked this vocal style or not, she was an artist on many levels. The actual melody and instrumental on Kate's version was excellent and full. Now, Pat. Yes, she is in a different league. There is rarely a "miss" on her vocal range. Pat's version utilizes her voice as the strength in the composition (where Kate needed the instrumental to stay away from completely falling into the Tiny Tim spiral on this one), and was made more to the style of the late 70's and early 80's. To the style of those that would buy and listen to Crimes of Passion...which is one of the greatest albums of all time. ONE of them, folks. Not THE greatest. Lol. There is no arguing the strength of Pat's vocal range, and the ease to which she nailed it. My ex-girlfriend used this song as a demo type of thing to try her pipes at doing the singing thing professionally. She was exhausted after she was done. She done good, not like Kate and definitely not like Pat. There is some subjectivity here. But again, yes...they are different women, And Kate and Pat are in different leagues. Both great. Pat, IMO, edges out Kate on this one. Remember, we are talking about Kate and Pat. Not the band behind them. Take the band away if need be and listen.

  • @SteelcityinNY
    @SteelcityinNY 2 месяца назад +1

    Now that the songs were played, and the comparisons come in to play...I hear you comparing the bands and not the artists. "It doesn't suit the song, for me". That's comparing what's around the voices and not the voices. I get it. It's subjective :) Just as many who hear Kate's version of this today...whether they heard the song before or not...kind of laugh at her voice thinking it's gotta be fake (or Tiny Tim. Betty Boop was also mentioned)...those that know Kate Bush react differently. Pound for pound, when you isolate the voice...which I did...you may tend to turn off Kate. You'll probably keep Pat playing. That's not subjective, actually, that's a musical ear. I guess I am very partial to Pat Benatar...but appreciative of any talent that can create an enjoying song like Withering Heights...as BOTH Kate and Pat did.
