  • This is a reaction/review of Pat Benatar singing "Wuthering Heights". This is a cover of Kate Bush's first hit single. The song is taken from Pat's second album "Crimes Of Passion". Both the instrumentation and vocals are reimagined by Pat and her band. This cover is more of a rock take on the song while Pat does some remarkable vocals. Enjoy ...

I love Pat Benatar's version. I love her voice. This song inspired me to read "Wuthering Heights" way back in 1982.

I bought this album Crimes of Passion when it came out all those years ago. I was 15 and I absolutely fell in love with this version. I played over and over. Pat's just amazing.

Pat is a trained operatic singer. It shows vs Kate. I vote Pat.

Not just trained, she actually performed for a bit.

You have no idea how cool this is to hear you react to this song. I was ten when this came out and I was so in love with this song and never had heard of Kate Bush, in fact only found out about her in the last few years. I think as far as sheer talent Kate Bush doesn’t hold a candle to Pat Benatar.

    Hmmmm..Not sure Todd.
Brave of Pat to take on this song BUT Kate Bush version is a work of genius.

Hi Jon ... I agree with you totally. I was so surprised to hear Pat cover the song on her 2nd album that I had to do a reaction. No one can be Kate! Rock on ...

As far as that note, I assume you mean the last one in Pat’s cover and it givesme chills.

I like and admire Pat very much. And kudos to her for having the moxy to cover Wuthering Heights. But for me it just doesn't match the original. Yes, it's fine, and as you said Pat did a good cover; but missing KB's vocal, missing Ian Bairnson's solo, and missing the celeste and arrangement, only leaves me thinking that it all means that the magic dust is missing. For me, a better comparison would be Kate's own re-working of WH from her 1986 album 'The Whole Story.'
Kate Bush is very hard to cover - because she has written her own songs, in her own style, for her to sing herself with her own voice. Another great singer who covered her was Julie Covington who took on the title track on Kate's first Album 'The Kick Inside' and again she is a great singer and she sings it wonderfully - but there is just something absent. For me, probably Anneke van Giersbergen is best at trying to capture KB songs - although even there I think her Wuthering Heights is well short of the original.
But thanks for this. I really enjoyed it.

Hi Tommy ... Love your thoughts on Pat's version. I too agree that this was a stretch for her, but thought she did a nice job. I did notice several RUclips videos of Pat performing the song live in the late 90's and early 2000's. It must be her homage to Kate. Thank you for your comment. Enjoy and keep rockin' ...

@@drivingwithtodd1781 Hi Todd and thank you so much for replying to my comment. Two final points I would make on this cover is that first in all fairness to Pat, had she tackled something like "Reaching Out" from Kate's "The Sensual World Album" it would have been a much closer call as to who did it better, although I think Kate's vocal on that will take some beating. And second, one of the real problems Pat or anyone faces when covering WH is that while it is a great and beautiful song, it is at heart, a distinctly 'odd' song and a song that was always out of time and place - even when it was released. You could release it 50 years earlier or 50 years later and still find that there is nothing really like it. And that very out of time and place element to it is one of the things that make it actually 'timeless.' To me Pat's version stripped away some of those elements, to make it differ from the original and also to make it more 'current' (and maybe to better suit her voice). But, of course, (to my mind anyway), that was where so much of the magic was lost.

I like a lot of Kate Bush's music, but in this particular case, I think Pat Benatar's rendition way, way better than the original. I may be biased because I heard the Benatar version first, and the Bush version later, but I don't think it would have made any difference. Pat Benatar's version is sweeping and operatic, while Kate Bush's version is… well, *not*.

Sorry, I'm in the minority but I love the Pat Benatar's version. I'm not into Kate Bush's version. I know she wrote it but it doesn't necessarily mean she sings it better, nor does it mean the arrangement is the only way to go.

You’re not in as big a minority as you think. This is similar to Hendrix version of All Along the Watchtower. The cover is much better than the original.

Fair analysis. But I have to disagree with you. I guess it all comes down to what you like. Pat’s version is miles above the Kate Bush version. I thought Kates version was weird at best. Pat’s husband Neil Giraldo really makes her version with his guitar work. This is actually one of the most underrated songs Pat ever did, right up there with Don’t Let it Show off of In the Heat of the Night. And why the surprise with Pat’s voice? She has an 8 octave range and used to sing opera before she became a rocker. I thought most people knew that!

They aren’t even in the same league. No way could Kate hit that note…

I know you're a Kate Bush fan, but I can't tolerate her voice -- or Pat Benetar mimicking Kate Bush's voice!
