      @@CurtisSnapshot :) I did make a huge mistake that I fixed now. I didn't subscribe! I'm going to check out your other vids, I don't have a full frame but rather the a6400, and I'm saving up hard for the 200 to 600 lens as its just a work of art, and I can't wait. There will be a 1.5x crop on my pics which... will help haha

    very nice video!
    but why on earth are you using 1/2000 shutter speed for a static heron? i know the a7iv doesn't have as much stabilization as the a7rv (that i am using), but i would never go higher than 1/500 for stationary birds, even at 600mm and at a distance. do you really feel you need the 1/2000?

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot  5 месяцев назад

      You’re definitely right, a lower shutter speed would have been a much better choice. I think I had the shutter speed so high because I was hoping to capture the heron catching some fish. But like you mentioned, I now often use much lower shutter speeds for stationary subjects. Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

    I have a question, I have a Sony a7 IV and a Sony 100-400 and 200-600 lens. When watching flying birds, my autofocus is slow. I can't focus. What could be the reason for this?

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot  4 месяца назад +1

      Great question! It sounds like your AF Speed might be set too low. Adjusting this setting changes how quickly the camera focuses when switching between subjects. Also, double-check that you’re using Continuous Autofocus (AF-C) to keep the camera focused on moving subjects.
      I do have a video covering how my a7iv is setup for wildlife photography: ruclips.net/video/KzbFIPYbakE/видео.htmlsi=ICi2heNry-DiRNe1
      I hope this helps-birds in flight can be really challenging! I definitely miss more photos than I capture.

    I have A6400 with 100-400. Recently I discovered the "Recall custom hold" function. For "Recall custom hold 1" I've set exposure compensation of -1 and for ""Recall custom hold 2" I've set exposure compensation to +1. I've assigned "Recall custom hold 1" to lens function button and "Recall custom hold 2" to the thumb button (AF lock or whatever). It is great when you have white or black birds with sky or trees in the background. You can change exposure compensation quickly without turning the wheel. Only problem is that when shutter is half pressed those buttons do nothing. I'm wondering if on A7IV it works the same way and if you can use programmed function when shutter half pressed.

      I have not tried setting up any recall settings yet, definitely something I need to look into. Thank you for sharing!

    The last time or two using my A7iv and the 200-600mm lens I'm getting some strangely fuzzy and slightly out of focus images. I'm going to re initialize the A7iv. Not sure what's going on. Other images are fully sharp and correct. It worked perfectly with the A7iii and in the beginning with the A7iv.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot  2 года назад +1

      I haven’t had any major issues with this setup, huge improvement from the a7ii I was using before this.

    @5:07 my camera has the same focusing issues at times. I thought it was the lens (Tamron 150-500) Apparently not 🤔 A7IV as well as my A7iii.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot  2 года назад +1

      Tbh it was user error on my part, the lens was basically focus breathing way past the bird. So I corrected this issue by setting the lens itself to only focus from 2.4m - 10m, then I was nailing the focus after that.

  • @shortypictures

    which autofocus field are you actually using? 🤔

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot  2 года назад

      I was using Tracking Spot Large, which is usually my go to focus setting.

  • @johndc7446
    @johndc7446 2 года назад +1

    The thin branch covering the red cardinal's face is whats probably causing the autofocus to not get the eye. I experience these things sometimes, where I am wondering why it is not focusing but when I look out of the viewfinder, I saw some thin bush getting on the way of the subject's face but I just didnt notice it because it was out of focus in the viewfinder.

    • @CurtisSnapshot
      @CurtisSnapshot  2 года назад +1

      I was using a medium focus point and the rest was user error on my part. The lens was basically focus breathing way past the bird. So I corrected the issue by setting the lens itself to only focus from 2.4m - 10m, then I was nailing the focus after that.
