  • Get underneath and check all the switches for proper operation if the tractor won’t start. This switch was good it’s just the pedal pad was worn.

2019 Yardworks This was absolutely the problem. Thank you very much for the tip. Bent switch back to correct position and got the job done. Cheers.

@Kens small engine repair. Would like some input on my problem. I have a older Yard Machine MTD. the style and set up is exactly like mower in vid down to engine and clutch switch. I will start with a history on mower to help. Always taken care of. Always 90 oct gas no eth. New gas lines, new carb straight from Briggs. Filters new etc. The mower looks new guts and all. Due to age I replaced carb etc. Well, last year I did all this. So last year the mower ran fine no issue. This year ran fine half summer. As I mowed I would hear it sputter here and there. That went on into every time I went into reverse engine would stall/kill. I could trick it by popping break clutch in and out again fast to keep it running with blades on. Took me months to narrow this down to- appears the issue is within break clutch. This issue happens both forward and reverse. Soon as I push the clutch IN ( NOT OUT ) even just a tad in the engine wants to stall and or shut right down like grounding out etc. That is with blades on. Now if I don't mess with clutch brake mower runs great. Mower also will back fire every so often when I hear engine kill and trick it to keep running. Switch appears to look fine. So does seat switch ( not button one it is the tabs/prong type ). Last year I did bypass the reverse blades on by pulling boot off ). That appeared fine as mower ran in reverse blades on. Does my issue even sound like a switch or where to look is what I am asking? The key here is most mowers issue is when clutch is pressed out engine kill. Mine is pressed in. I put the mower up till I can get some input or buy parts needed not wasted.

However, you didn't show your fix to the problem. You gave 2 possible solutions, but didn't show either one on how you repaired that mower. It would have been helpful.

If I remember correctly I didn’t have a welder so I put a hose clamp around the pad to add metal to it.

Usually the plastic switch will wear before the metal does, strange.

This parking brake is letting go on its own. How to you adjust it so it stays.

Fearless is it the same type of MTD tractor with parking brake at the bottom of the gear selector lever?

      @@KensSmallEngineRepair Its a White Outdoor LT542H
Its a hydro with the lever operated F and R on the side panel. The parking brake is up on the dash a d has that long rod that goes down to the bracket with the adjustment on the twist nut with a cotter pin holding it in place. But Down below the brake pedal has that round piece of metal with the slot on the end and when you push the parking brake lever down and push the brake pedal down it locks it into place. It keeps slipping out their. I already tried filing it a little now I'm getting ready to take a hammer and punch and try knocking that part down a little to see if it will stay. The adjustment rod itself doesn't look like it will help.

@@KensSmallEngineRepair I got it. The adjustment on the rod did fix it. I took the cotter pin out and twisted that twist lock up about 5 threads. It seems to be holding okay now. Sometimes the most obvious is the solution. Filing it definitely helped as well...
