  • With his 18th design, Michael Bluth of Open Sea Leather has pulled together all his learnings to produce the Open Sea Topsider Bifold LT. As the name suggests, it's a mouthful, it comes from marrying the best from several designs. It's more slim, minimalist and a great EDC wallet to meet needs. This review walks through how the Topsider, Houbei and the Topsider Bifold all contributed to Michael's masterpiece!

    Missed one important detail. You know if the cash is already folded in the Bifold LT. You can easily remove the cash and put it back in without having to open the wallet altogether.

    Another great review. As someone else pointed out, the internal structure is lifted directly from the 50-50, which is another great wallet. Much more a blending of the 50-50 and the Topsider than really the Houbei.

    Love that blue/natural/white thread color combo as well! Picked those for my Houbei 2.0, but I may need to pick this one up! Looks slightly more refined.

    I have lots of wallets from different makers...Trayvax, Lost Dutchman, and a couple of others. This is my first Open Seas wallet. It is without a doubt the best wallet I have ever owned. And the customer service is amazing. I messed up on my color selections and emailed them asking to change it, and less than a day later I got a response. It's a beautiful wallet and the stitching and leather are exceptional. I can't say enough good things about Open Seas.

    Michael's wallets are so good. This is just another awesome iteration including all the best features from experience and I love that 👍🏻😄 I have just found my "wallet peace" though for now as I finally got my natural shell cordovan Grain wallet in and I just think its brilliant for what it holds in a thin size. I even carry one of those micro pens in there as well. However the LT from Open Seas deserves high praise. Superb wallet design and function 👊🏻

    I have the regular Bifold in Natural. It's developed a BEAUTIFUL patina over 2.5 years. Best wallet i've ever had. I ordered a second one to just keep in storage for the time that mine needs replacing (hopefully a VERY long time from now).

      @@visionaryvapor8207 I really think it's the ultimate wallet. I'll buy a few of them at some point so I can have a lifetime supply. It strikes the perfect balance of staying super minimal while still carrying a lot, and it handles easily. I don't see myself using any other wallet in the future.

    Great review, thinking of purchasing one but using as cards only (no notes) with extra cards where the notes sit will is that good ideal having about 15 cards that be ok

    Thanks for the review Mark! Just subscribed to your channel. Awesome content! 😉
    I saw your cash insertion test with various bills but didn't see any 20, 50, 100 euro bills in there and I know those are wider than US dollars and similar to Yen. Have you tested those bills with the Topsider Bifold LT? How do they fit? Are they popping out on the side? (Asking for both cash wrap style and fold once).I use both US dollars and Euros since I split my time between the states and Europe so dual currency functionality is preferred.

    I have this wallet and love it. It is very functional and quick to use. This is my daily wallet. It's is my second Open Seas wallet. My first is the reverse waxed flesh Houbei wallet, which is also great, but I prefer the ease at which i can get cash into this wallet. I also prefer the Topsider Billfold LT to my JJ Leathersmith Lucais wallet for ease of use (that is a great wallet as well).

  • @GXDoubleX

    I got one when it launched and I would say it's a good functional design. I did find that after a couple of day of back pocket carry, the front internal card slit warped the card I placed there (plastic Mastercard) along the slit shape. The card I had in the back slit (also plastic) was OK, so that was kind of weird. It was slightly disappointing that the wallet warped a card and as a result I would probably only carry this wallet in the front pocket or a jacket pocket.

    ha, that's funny, because of I made almost the same wallet 'in style of open sea, but with inner pocket'. And now they made it. Really the same, even front slot pocket. Back slot pocket too. But my wallet has notch in the mid detail and now it's way easier to deal with 6-8 cards.

    These are always great but the only thing I’ve not been a fan of after owning several is how wide they are.
    Tauruscamp uses a somewhat similar concept but because the left front is a fold vs stitch on the Open Sea, it’s noticeably less square and wide even though it also holds US bills width-wise.

    • @danieladrianzen
      @danieladrianzen 6 месяцев назад

      I agree with this too, this is what has stopped me from getting an Open Sea wallet even though I love the look of them. To be fair, Tauruscamp trades width for height with the stitch on the bottom. I have a Tauruscamp and although I love it, even that one feels a little too large (in this case tall) for my taste.

    • @Bob-yn2iz
      @Bob-yn2iz 6 месяцев назад

      I couldn’t agree more. The only Open Sea Leather wallet that I like is the Gun Deck Quickdraw 2.0 and I use that one in a rotation for something a little different. That one isn’t as wide although it’s a little long/tall, just like the Tauruscamp Grain Wallet. My absolute favorite wallet so far is the Sin City Leather Nomad with a tuck closure. It functions just like the Tauruscamp Grain Wallet but its footprint is absolutely perfect at 3” wide by 4” tall. I can get a ton of folded bills in it if I need to as the tuck closure can adjust to them better than the snap closure. The Tauruscamp Grain Wallet is my second favorite wallet after that because I also find it just a bit too long/tall.
      Another really great wallet that functions just like the Tauruscamp Grain Wallet but has perfect 3”x4” dimensions is made by Hoslygoods. He’s a leather crafter in Indonesia and the wallet is called the Gili Slim. He was on Etsy for a little bit and that’s where I bought mine but he’s not on there at the moment as he said he’s trying to switch over to his own website for international orders. Check out his instagram page to see the wallet. I can highly recommend it and I have that one as my third favorite wallet.

      @@Bob-yn2izI've been looking at the Nomad for awhile. The only thing that gives me pause is the snap flap. I think it would bug me because of how I use both of my Tauruscamp Grains. the way I use them is 3 cards outside the flap quick draw style. The other 7 are inside, cash out back obviously. I very rarely have to open it, and I carry in my front pocket and those cards in the front don't go anywhere. I do on occasion put them under the flap if Im somewhere that I don't want my cards visible, having the option is nice. There's no way to access cards without opening the Nomad is there? I'm drooling over some of his Shell offerings. Gorgeous work and craftsmanship, but when I bought my first Grain it kind of ended my search, 20 or so wallets later 😆. The Houbei is my second favorite, I have two of them as well😅. I'm not a fan of this one though for me personally, I don't think I could fit everything I need to carry. It's like 6 cards and 4 thin insurance type cards so it's not as bulky as it sounds, but it'd be a bit much for this one

    • @Bob-yn2iz
      @Bob-yn2iz 6 месяцев назад

      @@dubester1982I use my Grain Wallet just like you with the tuck flap behind my most used card. It really is a great design! On my Nomad wallets from Jose at Sin City Leather, I also asked him to put a quick access slit on the very back of the wallet and it works great! If you ask him, he has pictures of it that he can show you. The only thing I’m unsure of is if it could handle more than one card or not. I only keep a single card back there. I agree with you about the snaps on the wallets. I tried a few with snaps but I just don’t like them. The tuck closure works so slick on the Nomad and Jose will customize it if you want it on the right side or left side. I really like that he’s so willing to customize a wallet to suit your needs! I bet if you asked him, he’d probably add a quick access pocket on the back of a Nomad (similar to his Highlander design) if you want it to hold a few cards instead of just one.

  • @yelyl136
    @yelyl136 6 месяцев назад +1

    Nice wallet. It's actually closer to the 50/50 than the Topsider Bifold. Personally, I still think that the OG Topsider and OG Gundeck are still the best Open Sea Leather Wallet models. Cause it's the simplest, most minimalist design. 2 slots is really all you need. 1 for cash and 1 for cards. Or use it all for cards.

    Late to the review. Just one question: Has Michael Bluth discovered a thing called 'edge dye' and edge burnishing? Raw untreated leather edges and interiors absorb humidity, sweat, and moisture like a sponge. When leather gets soft,..it gets more vulnerable to cuts, abrasion and color loss. A lifetime warranty on these? I don't think they'll last six months in the humid Alabama summers.
    I'm not being critical. I like the designs. It's just certain attentions need addressing. Mike, if you read this: Buy some dye, dye markers and a jar of Tokonole. Lift the standards. You're fellow crafters will stop cringing.
    Have a blessed Day!
