    On the point of madarame not feeling sufficiently established and how we never see his abuse, we do, it's just in a way that might be easy to miss if you don't have the right experience with it. I have gone through a lot of psychological abuse from my own father, gaslighting, devaluation, guilt tripping and plenty more, so believe me when I say that almost all of the dialogue between yusuke and madarame (especially shadow madarame) are expert recreations of how some abusers will manipulate their children and could very easily teach a victim that they're being abused and need to escape. It's an excellent portrayal of parental abuse.

    • @Macca
      @Macca  Год назад +4

      The way the scenes are written are accurate, I agree, my problem is that we never see Madarame do these things. I don't believe we sufficiently see Madarame manipulate and psychologically abuse Yusuke, we only see the result of it. It feels like we don't get the full picture until its too late for it to work for me.

    • @kirbinato5201
      @kirbinato5201 Год назад +17

      @@Macca fair enough but you can't really show something like the kind of abuse the writers are clearly pulling from. It's a very long, drawn out process that spans years of very subtle conditioning that can only be understood from within, it's invisibility to outsiders being why it persists for so long, so making it understandable to a general audience would be inauthentic and take away from how it could teach abuse victims to escape.
      Also, it would likely change the players motivation from exposing madarame to saving yusuke, which would teach the very harmful lesson that someone is coming to save the victims which is only true for the luckiest of the lucky. This would change yusukes story from realising he's being abused, escaping by his own will to do so and continuing on in life, to being rescued and losing his agency in his emancipation.

      It comes from Japan's history with the Portuguese. The Portuguese and French variation of the name Jose does pronounce the J. If you're American it is understandable the you wouldn't understand, because we generally only have experience with the name through Spanish origins. As someone whose family originates from Luxembourg with a similar name, I can confirm that the game pronunciation isn't wrong.

    I feel like that scene has caused both an over-reaction and an under-reaction from the fanbase.
    Ann is never actually in danger in that situation, nor does she strip, yet it is treated as she has been SAed.
    However, the actual issue is how Ann was pressured into doing it and part of the joke is her being uncomfortable with it.
    This scene would not generate that much controversy if Atlus had Ann took the intiative to participate in the painting and come up with a plan, instead of being pressured into it.

    • @Vlayer
      @Vlayer Год назад +1

      Thing is, that's part of her character arc. She does in the end come up with a similar plan of using her looks and the way others objectify her as a "strength", rather than as a "weakness", when you try to get the letters of invitation in Shido's Palace.
      This is a recurring motif with her character, from the allusions and direct mentions of femme fatales, her "a beautiful rose has thorns" line, even something as small as how Ryuji tends to tease her about her looks, purposefully riling her up, only for her to turn it around on him in the beach scene and making him feel embarrased instead.

  • @mitsuruhype

    The thing about Jose and his name is it is an Abrahamic/Hebrew name, not Spanish. It isn't José. Effectively, it is an older translation of a name bestowed to one of Christ's four brothers that are the legitimate children of Joseph where as christ being born of God not being technically Joseph's legitimate son but still loved and cared for by him all the same. So yes, they pronounce his name right, but modern translation of the text says they get the name wrong as it now states that brother's name to be Joses, which is pronounced the same but you add a ZANEY S TO THE END OOO!

  • @holydezmondgamez1728
    @holydezmondgamez1728 Год назад +8

    Yeah I agree that since Yusuke wasn't doing the painting as a way to exploit Ann it wasn't bad but since she was pressured and that it was right after a week's from Kamoshida does make it in poor taste. I mostly saw it as a bad attempt to humor or comic relief

  • @ajmoment8091

    While may was definitely a step down from April in a lot of ways one thing I do have to give it props to is its visual symbolism. April was a bit too straightforward with it, and even if it wasn't it literally told you everything. But May had a lot of, still not exactly subtle symbolism, but symbolism that felt good to pick up on. You already mentioned how the second half of the palace was entirely based upon famous artworks, showing how Madarame's only talent as an artist is in replication, but I also want to give props to the first half of the palace. The entire thing is just full of hallway after hallway filled with paintings of his pupils. I think what this one meant to represent, since it was the portion of the museum meant to be publicly viewed, is that Madarame didn't view himself as an artist because of the copies he made, he viewed himself as an artist because he thinks he "made" his pupils what they are, and his masterpieces for the world to see are those pupils. I think had we actually seen firsthand how Madarame would be bad enough to push one of his pupils to suicide, seeing hallway after hallway of his pupils staring blankly forward, knowing the abuse they went through, and being able to piece together that Madarame thinks he deserves praise for how he treated them that that symbolism could've hit really hard. It's just a shame that that's not what we got.

    In regards of that scene, Ann is basically learning on the fly how to become a femme fatale, much like her persona Carmen. While clumsy and aided by Yusuke's naivete/nervousness she's empowering herself by using what she usually considered a hinderence and a source of social problems, her exotic beauty. Sure, the guys had to bring out the idea, but that's the tipping point of Ann learning how to use her sex appeal to her favor (something that's also revisited in her confidant), and in the end she realized its something necessary for their plan, it would've been totally different if Joker as the leader ORDERED her to do it AND done for their boys gratification, where in reality they guys treats it as mild teasin at worst

    Yeah….as much I like the story for next month (especially how Makoto’s arc was handled) I can’t really deny Kaneshiro is kind of lame. I think he ties into the overall theme of Makoto’s arc fine enough but other than that, he doesn’t have a stand out personality, his motives are basic, and he doesn’t really come off as threatening. Plus he’s even MORE underutilized than Madarame when it comes to showing off his misdeeds in reality, the only time that is kind of even remotely “shown” is when he catches Makoto…and thats it….his boss fight was pretty good though at least.
    I think it would’ve been better if the villain for June was like a student on his payroll thats close to him and also has some ties to Makoto, like being a council prez candidate she beat in elections or something.

    Hate to be that guy, but Jose is actually being pronounced mostly correctly. Jose is only pronounced the way you're thinking of it in Spanish and Spanish speaking places. The pronunciation they're using is rooted in the Portuguese pronunciation, which along with French and Luxembourgish uses the hard J sound.
    I would know, considering it's my name.

    I do think that scene is a little tastless but I disagree that ann's agency is being removed. Its not like she was being seriously manipulated to agree to the plan by the boys, if that happened I can see how her agency can be removed.
    She agreed to it from her own sense of justice and did it on her own terms; which I think maintains her agency and autonomy.
    I also agree it would have been better if she came up with the plan but I think it adds to her character development as she does actually become more confidant as the story goes on. It culminates in that one scene on Shido's ship where she pulls of the plan to get the invitation.
