You should consider playing Terra Invicta! Super fun if not a fair bit long, although playing the group that serves the aliens is super easy and can be faster lol
2 greatest things that ever happened to me in Shogun 2: 1. won a siege battle with only 2 men remaining, those being my Daimyo, and his eldest son. Everything else died, and the enemy was driven from the field by the strength Duty, Honor and Family. 2. Played a coop with a friend, and we were slowly eating our way through Japan, making sure to build alliances and make friends. But then, the Honma clan, a measly one-province clan, started war against us, and EVERYONE ELSE FOLLOWED! To this day its still remembered as the greatest betrayal and plot i've experienced in any game. Damn you Honma, and your conspiracy! From Sweden with Love - Kami
After watching, gonna throw out a tip. Yari Ashigaru are mobile walls. When defending in a siege and they reach your walls, pull back and have the Yari Ashigaru form yari wall directly behind the castle walls. As the enemy climb over they smack into your spears one at a time which makes their stamina deplete faster and thus morale drops fast too. The other part is when units are assigned to a wall spot in Shogun 2, the unit models prioritize being in position over fighting (idk why)
@TheArklyte personally, Shogun 2 is my favorite game in terms of field combat. If used correctly, yari ashigaru can kill samurai, but samurai used properly will eviscerate ashigaru. Unit position was still important, but the battles were also kind of fast, cheap units can beat expensive units (though don't rely on that), and the battles almost felt like going through stages (skirmish, cavalry move, infantry advance, etc.). The sieges really sucked though. I think there were 2-4 possible layouts per castle level and after awhile that gets repetitive
The total war franchise gave birth to my love of History I first discovered it when I was 9 years old watching the prince of Mastodon😅 watching his old Total War videos
PrinceofMacedon Jesus, that takes me back. Loved his Rome Total War videos and his adventure videos. 👍 Another thing that got me interested in history was the show Deadliest Warrior.
For me it expanded my love of history from just ww2 to all eras my first tw was rome and the crazy mods like eb gave me insight into what would become my favourite period of history classical europe
Deus Vult! Otomo are a hilarious clan with faith, steel, and lots of gunpowder! I love the Otomo so much, and it's great to see you play my favorite clan in the game and converting all of Japan to Christianity.
Something you can do, which is especially helpful as the Otomo and less helpful as the Shimazu, is park a ship in the strait to the northeast of Buzen (The golden line with 2 arrows). This will prevent enemy armies crossing until they take out your navy there, and let you fully take over the island without needing a spare garrison in Buzen.
Move the Nanban Trade Port to Buzen for upgraded Tercio's. If you upgrade the Fletcher to Master Bowmaker, you can have gold accuracy Tercios as your main ranged troops. Paired with your choice of mainline infantry trained with your armor/weapon upgrades from Satsuma. There are better places to train your cavalry, but light cav can hold their own in the meantime.
who needs mainline when you have tercios, their musket ripped everything apart and when in melee range they will always have the upper hand despite their small unit sized (except againts cavalry that why you have naginatas or lowly yari ashigaru in the back or in the flanks) and otomo can support 3-4 tercios army (or even more) when already have all the trade node and kyushu, trully the power of god, guns, -anime- in your side
Some history I learned from Nobunaga's ambition, Otomo Sorin's wife led an anti-christian coalition of monks through her role as a high priestess. Sorin (Yoshishige at the time), attempted to mend that bridge becoming a Buddhist monk (thus adopting "Sorin"). Eventually Sorin would divorce his wife, Nata, under the advice of the Jesuits. Nata pissed them off so much they would call her Jezebel.
To add on to the whole Christian being God teir 'See what i did there?' there are specific units and Ships that only Christian factions can get. the European cannon being one and the Nanban ship being another. such a powerhouse.
Nanban trade ships are op , I can destroy an entire fleet with only one nanban trade ship. Combine that with the black ship , I can basically rule the Japanese waves
Fun video but a history fact 大友(Otomo) was not the first to encounter the Portuguese it was the small island called 種子島(Tanegashima ) the first encounter of Christians was the 島津(Simazu) when Francisco Xavier met 島津貴久(Simazu Takahisa) although it didn’t last long because in Satusma ( the providence of the shimazu family) the buddhist monk complained so Xavier had to leave and then that’s where Otomo accepted Xavier and his faith . Btw if anyone is curious Nanban 南蛮 means the savages from the south ( meaning the Spanish and Portuguese) and they called the Dutch and the English were called 紅毛人 this means red head people
Fun Facts: St Francisco Xavier have travelled many Asian countries. Including Goa(India), Malacca(Malaysia). Btw, Nanban name come from Chinese Nanman( 南蛮/Southern Barbarians) because of Han Dynasty hatred of nam yuen people (Modern day Vietnam and Thais)
In last battle, actually in siege defenses in general, when they have the skirmish superiority (more missile units than you have) it would be wise to gather your troops at the opposite side of the castle and let them come closer and climb up. If the castle courtyard is large enough, even their bowman will climb up, that way you will have the opportunity to spearwall half the enemy army with all your infantry while also shooting arrows and bullets at them. Although, being a youtuber, maybe you know it but chose to do fair and square, anyway that is how i managed to defend all those starting battles back in my shogun 2 playing days when i chose the Gunpowder game.
If i remember correctly, there was a way to put your spear ashigaru not on the wall but just before the walls in a spear wall formation and they would just decimate units as they get onto the walls.
Ah yes, I remember my first Christian campaign in Shogun 2 as the Shimazu. I started out thinking early gunpowder units will win me the game. I ended with 5 max level priests who turned the southern half of Japan up to Kyoto into a blasted hellscape of rebel provinces, destroying several major clans in the process, without declaring war once.
My goto strat atm is to always get 5 rice exchanges as fast as possible and 5 metsuke to manage the towns, increases your taxrate with no happiness penalty and it is a HUGE amount for the investment as well as metsuke ranks being even bigger increases. You can seriously support a 20 stack of samurai with 5 of these guys in place, and more as your growth snowballs.
I completely agree about the speeches, they were best in original Rome total war and medieval 2 total war where traits could change the speech your generals gave, which helped them feel more organic.
Fun fact, if you ever try this on your own, putting a single ship in the straight will prevent any army from crossing. Even a single bow ship. They'll have to build a navy an remove the ship before they can cross. Cheesy I know but I always did this so I didn't have to worry about the Ouchi until I conquered Kyushu
When I was about 11 years old and got a computer for the first time, my gaming was split between Minecraft and Total War (Shogun 2, Rome 2, and Atilla), which is an odd combination. I loved that time, and I especially loved playing the Otomo. Probably still my favorite faction in any total war game ever, I probably spent half of my time on Shogun 2 playing as the Otomo. I'm very happy that people love Shogun 2 and the Otomo both as much as I do. You probably just want to play vanilla, but if you are interested in trying out a modded campaign sometime there is a youtuber called Pilps who puts his mod list below his videos, and I have had a lot of fun with his suggested mods. They add a lot of content but it all still feels like Shogun 2, just feels like it got a few dlcs on top of it.
I love the total war content from you, my only critique would be the amount of cuts you do during the battles. You pulled off some rather impressive victories in this video but with all the cuts mid battle it is quite hard to keep track of what is going on. I understand from a creator perspective that this was already a long, well-edited video, but if like 2-5 minutes of more battle content is there it would make those big battles easier to follow. Maybe saving the battle replay and editing that could work for showing cinematic angles, but you are already doin great for us. Like I said earlier, love the total war content and I hope to see more epic battles from you in the future!!!
My favorite siege tactic is to, get a tier 2 or above stronghold. Only place yari in the lower level directly below the wall of the higher level, and man the walls above with guns back with archers. Minimizes any numbers or quality advantage the enemies have. Unfortunately though, the yari usually take heavy casualties.
More shogun two please. Maybe Ikko Ikki next? Or if you're up for a challenge try doing Uesugi on a high difficulty. Maybe western roman empire in Attila TW would be fun to watch too.
I understand almost nothing about these total war games but this is so fun to watch! Keep doing stuff like this (although could you cut less during battle sequences? it makes everything really anticlimactic and kinda gives me mental whiplash)
So Otomo Sorin did eventually convert to Christianity and took the Christian name of Francisco. I believe he also mandated that all his subjects also convert to Christianity. However his wife was notable for being anti-Christian and there is some doubts as to how pious he and his son were, since Sorin had had conflicts with the Buddhist temples in his realm even before his conversion, so it may have just been a political move to legitimize these conflicts.
I've done a Hattori Kiso Ninja only challenge, its amazing. the Ninja are so strong when they good veterancy as well as either armor or attack bonuses. an army of pure Ninja can take out an army of pure Katana samurai if played right. I'm all for a Ninja only challenge run Stak.
Getting any peace in this game is so hard to near impossible. One time I came across a new nation and made a peace treaty on the spot. The next turn, as the game was going through all the different people, the same nation contacted me again, cancelled the peace treaty, and declared war on me.
I find save replays from total war a very good tool to show good battles. During your battles you're too focused and you needed to cut the music which is one of the Best things from Shogun 2
This challenge reminds me of that one Christian revilt that was headed by a SAMURAI PRIEST. Amakusa Shirou's rebellion sounds fake when you first hear about it, but it's real.
Me, playing Shogun 2 for the first time: Matchlocks are good, but bows are better. Me after playing with the Otomo and discovering the Tercos: DEUS VULT!
Matchlocks are most powerful when you are the defender in a siege. You place your archers in the outer walls and withdraw them once the enemy starts climbing the walls, but have yari ashigaru or another unit ready and waiting. Once the enemy climbs up, they're met with a hail of gunfire to the face from the matchlocks stationed in the inner walls, while you have a yari wall right in front of the next wall they have to climb. This can lead to some insane kill counts.
technically, the latest total wars games still the speech before the battle just not as cinematic as rome, shogun 1 n 2, medieval 1 n 2. when the battle start, by that mean when you hit the start button, if you position your battle camera directly at you commander units or zoom in near your commander unit, he will start a speech like how you would in the past total war as if you were playing on arcade mode for the old series, or something like that where your commanding unit start to gave his speech.
The best thing I found is to not actually recruit any gunpowder units. Infantry until you have access to higher tier, and preferably an artisan building for accuracy bonus. That way you can min max, and get that recruitment bonus with all the other bonuses and with the higher term units. If you really need the gunpowder infantry, I guess go ahead and do it, but it's more worth it to wait. You only really need cannons and that doesn't complete the mission. So you can wait until you get those higher terror units with the artists and accuracy. Also make sure you get the Hatori fix. I think they're bugged.
in sieges a good tactic would be to send the yari ashigaru in front of the walls and have guns or arrows to cover for them, that way you can defend against many waves
8:49 its not even like they got rid of them entirly either. in some tw games the generals do give a speech but its in game dialouge not a cutscene so the audio quality is limited by the game.
Mori is one of my fav clans due "roleplay" I do in my head. They start turning Japan into a naval superpower early on so later it will be force to be noticed.
When I bought the game, my first campaign was Shimazu. "Starting situation: Easy" With Otomo as your only neighbor within 5 turns of starting the game, and being unable to convert to Christianity prior to turn 20+? Easy my ass.
I love these games and I love your content, but given you play these for so long and there is always something going on in a total war game I was wondering if you would be willing to release more unedited footage, full battles or more time on the campaign map, I could literally watch you play these my favourite games for hours, its not a waiting game like paradox feels like.
You probably already know this but you should always keep your Yari Ashigaru in Yari Wall, its so busted that you can have them fight Samurai and the peasants will win
Hi Stakuyi! If you think it'd be worth it, I think a playthrough of the Youjo Senki Redux mod in Hoi4 would be fun to see. Please? It would really make my day. =^x^=
39:54 Stak: or should I say *oyasumi* haha get it? Funny pun? Ah, no one probably gets it… Omori fans: *vietnam flashbacks* close your eyes and you’ll leave this dream…
"Christian Japan" is less ahistorical than you might think! This is far too early in Japanese history for the conversion of whole clans to Christianity, but by the end of the Sengoku Jidai there were several daimyo who had converted to Catholicism, as well as about three million ordinary Japanese, to the point that during the Imjin War, many Japanese samurai marched in Korea under the sign of the Cross. Despite the widespread appeal of Christianity within Japan, the Tokugawa Shogunate deeply distrusted them, seeing Christians as catspaws of hostile foreign nations, instigators of political and social instability in an era where Japan needed stability more than anything else, and potentially allied with the Toyotomi party which the Tokugawa had defeated at the Battle of Sekigahara.
I did not put it as a text but if this video gets 5000 likes I will do a ninja only run

For some reason that just sounds incredibly cute to me. I blame anime.
Just completed a Shimazu campaign a couple weeks ago where I converted the map to 100% Christianity on Legendary difficulty
My favourite Clan in shogun 2. Excited to see more
Oh the irony, I just completed an Otomo campaign. The Nanban Quarter is OP and if you can get the Black Ship you will rule the waves
God, Guns, Samurai, Crusades, you son of a b**** im in.
All I remember from the first 5 minutes "Shameful Display!!!"
Please more shogun 2 content I love it so much!
As a catholic who started playing shogun 2. i have found my next playthrough's clan
FX is coming out with a show about samurai meeting the Portuguese I want to say sometime next year it’s called Shōgun
"Kill them all. Let god sort them out."
Is that an Alucard Abridged reference, or just an actual real life quote.
Nobody expects the Japanese inquisition
"I am the way and the light, except occasionally the light is muzzle flash..." ~ Jesus probably
i need a continuation of this
The risk v reward is neat. Clans naturally agro because you’re Christian but you can roll up the advantages if you can weather the storm.
You probably already know this but you should always keep your Yari Ashigaru in Yari Wall, its so busted that you can have them fight Samurai and the peasants will win
God I lobe shogun 2, what a way to find your vids
Hi Stakuyi! If you think it'd be worth it, I think a playthrough of the Youjo Senki Redux mod in Hoi4 would be fun to see. Please? It would really make my day. =^x^=
My favorite game in the series and I can’t wait for the ninja challenge
The Chad Yari Ashigaru will slaughter Yari Samurai every time, because Yari wall makes them Yarimazing!

Stak: or should I say *oyasumi* haha get it? Funny pun? Ah, no one probably gets it…
Omori fans: *vietnam flashbacks* close your eyes and you’ll leave this dream…
i should mention japan always had guns just struggled with mass production of said guns
Faith, steel, and gunpowder!
I can’t wait for a part 2
We're getting the band back together......we're on a mission from God.
MORE SHOGUN 2 AND JAPANESS/ASIAN GAMEPLAY PLZZZ!!!!!
