You can really see how careful celebrities now have to be about what they say in interviews. The result is going to be a total lack of candour. In future, watching a talk show will be like a series of crafted statements approved by a legal staff. All because people can't deal with disagreement like adults.
When you watch the guy walk in but it seems like you missed the 1st part of the convo but then Doug Benson suddenly pops up and you question everything you know.

Honestly, a lot of people today are way too emotionally driven and not willing to stop and think about whether or not they know the whole thing. Running on emotion first over controversies like this never works out.
The Arrested Development cast were interviewed. At some point, during the interview, it was mentioned how Jeffrey Tambour lost his temper during the shoot of the series and screamed at fellow co-star Jessica Walter. Jessica Walter then broke down in tears, explaining how she hadn't experienced anything like that before in over 40 years of acting. Jason Bateman and David Cross however explained that they are a family and shooting can be difficult and how actors deal with things differently and that Tambour just lost his temper that day and he apologised for it. In essence, Bateman and Cross were explaining how this was a one-off thing and that they all got over it and are a close family unit and that arguments are bound to happen. People interpreted this as Bateman and Cross dismissing Jessica's Walter's pain, talking over her, and being an example of sexism in the media industry. They apologised soon afterwards.
It's interesting that they're talking about irrational internet anger and all the comments for this are people making shitty remarks. You can extrapolate the context from the conversation. I like to hear David Cross speak, he's an interesting and funny man. Thanks.
Eh. It's a big story if you follow comedy/comedians. To most people it was just white noise, or something you'd get from ET or TMZ. Which is why they probably should have taken 10 seconds to give the context to a twenty minute interview. Maybe they just assume only comedy fans listen and watch their podcast.
Yes, because pausing a video and reading the comment section or googling David Cross controversy, would be too much work. Better for him to put himself on a cross (pun intended) one more time for those few that couldn't be bothered to look it up.
just google it people....basically tambor got in shit for yelling at Jessica Walter on set in front of the rest of the cast while they did nothing to defend her...the reason they didn't defend her was because she apparently had done it to others, and they all knew it. a "she had it coming" attitude, you could say...which if true, then it was deserved. she then "put on the waterworks" and now people are kicking up a fuss about it, so it's apologies all around, before netflix gives them the roseanne treatment. now that you know that, you can understand why he is "apologizing" and being cryptic. no one actually thinks there was a problem with someone who was known for throwing their weight around getting a dose of their own meds. but the sjw's make alot of noise, so we get a cancelled press tour, and the parade of damage control apologies.
If David cross made fun of me like he did to the Asian woman I would instantly think "oh yeah it is fucking David Cross. If he actually wants to be mean I would be crying."

How do so many people in the comments not know about the controversy he's talking about? It was all over twitter just days before the new season came out.
Its so great people can express their own opinion with all their bias and self aggrandizing. Whats even better is that the person receiving it will move on and not give a shit because words are fucking wind.
I hate how this show always generalizes shit that is done on Twitter as if it's a large portion of the actual publics opinion or feelings. They constantly make twitter beefs as if the entire world is "saying" something or acting a certain way.
Man everyone cowers down these days. David Cross use to be an outspoken guy that didn't give a shit...and now this. So he's having to apologize for what someone else did...because someone got screamed at and it came out in an interview. I sorta feel right or wrong old David Cross wouldn't tip toe around a topic such as this. Man society has gotten super weak and sad these days. Can't wait till it all implodes on itself.
Its because everyone is scared of social media, especially since its now become the second arm of the MSM. Even if you do no harm, you'll get bad publicity if you're not PC or you don't say the "right" things. No one thinks anymore.... everyone just reacts. And that's the problem.
Comedians who are crying about "sjw " culture just missed the boat. There's never been more money in comedy , they're just not in touch with new funny. Happens every generation, suck it up, me-babies privileged celebs.
He has to speak more carefully now, because, as he said, he "doesn't want to go through this sh*t again." He learned the lesson that if you say a woman was being sh*tty, and used tears to emotionally manipulate sympathy, then you will get crucified by extreme feminists. Sure, I wish he had spoken more openly, and not been gentle about saying Walters was pushing buttons which lead Tambor to snap, which is why everyone defends him, but as he said, he "learned the lesson"- being open and honest about women's behavior will get you into trouble. He wants to work again, so he is choosing his words carefully. P.S. You can hear he and Bateman kind of defend Tambor, by saying "it didn't come out of nowhere". It reminded me of Bill Burr's bit about hitting a woman, in which he says that the focus is always about men's reaction, and not what led up to it, or to what he was reacting. I think it is on youtube as "no reason to hit a woman". I think it applies here, which is why everyone came to his defense- she is likely the "difficult" one, not him. Burr says "can we not act like the ass-whooping just fell out of the sky"; in this case, it would be a yelling/insulting fit instead of an ass-whooping. Cross and Bateman both said he is not the type to come in angry and yelling, and that it "didn't come out of nowhere", which is how you say she was being a passive-aggressive, condescending b*tch is PC culture. He said what he can get away with in this culture and still find work. In other words, don't hate the player, hate the game (PC culture).
Zer0FiveSeven agreed but it’s really not as much his fault as Jim and sams, they are the interviewers and should have said “just so everyone knows the backstory .....” and filled us in. They don’t have to be careful where David probably does.
I'm disappointed in David Cross here. Joking about "we were putting Nazi cookies in the oven" totally seeks to downplay and deflect legitimate criticism. He was wrong. Just say that and move on. Stop trying to justify it
For those of you who, like me, had no context or frame of reference for what David is talking about at the top of the segment, a summary & a link: A few days before the Roseanne story swallowed the news cycle, most of the Arrested Development principals had a round table discussion for the NYT in advance of Season 5 going up on Netflix. During the sitdown, Jessica Walter broke down as she recalled on-set verbal abuse from Jeffrey Tambor, which she described as worse than anything she'd experienced in 60 years of acting. That would have been enough on its own, but what followed was an apparent attempt by the rest of the cast in attendance, with the notable exception of Alia Shawkat, to contextualize the situation in an apparent attempt to mitigate Tambor's behaviour. Here's the NYT piece: www.nytimes.com/2018/05/23/arts/television/arrested-development-netflix-interview-jeffrey-tambor.html
Maybe actors are just nutjobs who'd like to be normal but just can't. So they run with the multiple personality syndrome. I dunno. The Arts and her artists are that way, and bring us some deep, meaningful ways of looking at our lives. But I think it comes at a personal cost to the artist.
Big David Cross fan here. I agree with most of his statements and rationalizations 60% of the time. EVERYONE goes through stress. I don't agree at 13:24, that just because something is stressful that you can write off berating a coworker. I agree, it's understandable, but don't be an ageist and equate Jessica's age or sex as a factor. I still love you David, but on this point, I disagree
Wow. Being an entertainer sure is hard work. But it seems like it is the most difficult when you have to cover for intolerant behavior of others. Tambor is likely in real life his character in 'Larry Sanders Show.' Hey Now, I may be wrong.
Mark Normand is great but too bad he gets ignored. I don't understand this show. Once in a while you get gold when guys like Ricky Gervais show up. Nobody gives a shit about political hot takes and PC outrage. You're comedians, you are supposed to be riffing and shitting on each other. DedHedJosh you sound like an idiot
It’s already begun to
"We live in a society..."
Its because everyone is scared of social media, especially since its now become the second arm of the MSM. Even if you do no harm, you'll get bad publicity if you're not PC or you don't say the "right" things. No one thinks anymore.... everyone just reacts. And that's the problem.
Don't you wish it was more like the good old days....????? Right???? What are you even saying, bro?
I saw that show at the Knitting Factory that's mentioned @17:14. Some funny, funny shit!
Comedians who are crying about "sjw " culture just missed the boat. There's never been more money in comedy , they're just not in touch with new funny. Happens every generation, suck it up, me-babies privileged celebs.
I just watched a Getting Doug with High from 2014 with David Cross. I wonder if they got together a toked it up.
The Analrapist of the show should be the one to says hey everybody calm down.
Great radio. Talk for twenty minutes and don't explain wtf you're talking about. David Cross is a useless interview at this point.
*progressive movement =/= liberalism
He is always incredibly bitter, non interested, and in a horrible mood every. single. time. i see him in any sort of interview.
Boondock I was about to say he notorious for "bad interviews" he has a old funny bit on it, Answer your telephone. One of my favorites.
Zer0FiveSeven agreed but it’s really not as much his fault as Jim and sams, they are the interviewers and should have said “just so everyone knows the backstory .....” and filled us in. They don’t have to be careful where David probably does.
I wonder where they keep all the nuts that have been sheared off comics
Sam looks like Alia Shawkat
Confusing as fuck to be vague about some shit no one knows happened
I have no idea what is going on
Who else wants more Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret?...That shit WAS FUNNY.
10:58 whoa, that was really well said
David Cross was totally snorting or shooting some meth in the bathroom hahahah and I just drove by his High School as I was listening to this
If it were a man crying or upset and women talking over him nobody would have said a thing.
I can’t believe Doug said nothing while they shat on Guardians!
I'm disappointed in David Cross here. Joking about "we were putting Nazi cookies in the oven" totally seeks to downplay and deflect legitimate criticism. He was wrong. Just say that and move on. Stop trying to justify it
16:23 - Colin would say: "Sam, shut ya face. Jesus Christ."
Why are they playing Steve C? Are his family getting royalties
This interview is great but anybody who does not work in stand-up comedy clubs would not understand anything that they’re saying literally
Gimme a call Dave. Would mean alot to us.
artie lange hates david cross
lol what's little boy Mark Normand doing there in the corner not punning?
He's From The AATC Fame.
When did David Cross get such a persecution complex?
I guess after what ever he is talking about happened, but I don't know what he is even talking about
This whole interview feels like the character Fred Armisen does where he talks forever without ever making a point.
11:45 EXACTLY
be nice to know what the hell they are talking about
i know it doesn't matter and he shouldn't care about my opinion but...doug benson is not funny.
20:39 there's Jim with the 40 year old reference
Cross is terrific in "Arrested Development"..and a few voice overs...other than he is not worth mentioning!
You clearly know nothing and should never type again.
Anyone have any idea or a link to what the fuck they're talking about?
For those of you who, like me, had no context or frame of reference for what David is talking about at the top of the segment, a summary & a link:
A few days before the Roseanne story swallowed the news cycle, most of the Arrested Development principals had a round table discussion for the NYT in advance of Season 5 going up on Netflix.
Here's the NYT piece:

Mark taking everything literal in the beginning.
Love Jimmy. Love Sammy. Love David Cross. This stunk.
Why is the guy from the chipmunk movie there?
That guy Jim hired does not belong on camera
Wow. Being an entertainer sure is hard work. But it seems like it is the most difficult when you have to cover for intolerant behavior of others. Tambor is likely in real life his character in 'Larry Sanders Show.' Hey Now, I may be wrong.

HEADLINE: DAVID CROSS HATES HEROES
What the fuck even happened?
Mark Normand is great but too bad he gets ignored. I don't understand this show. Once in a while you get gold when guys like Ricky Gervais show up. Nobody gives a shit about political hot takes and PC outrage. You're comedians, you are supposed to be riffing and shitting on each other. Watch the last couple of 'You Know What Dude' podcasts (Robert Kelly's podcast) to see what a comedy podcast should be. The latest with Stavros Halkias & Nick Mullen (Cumtown) is hilarious, but not on RUclips yet.
