    Another popular wing chun question this is. Due to the many different wing chun systems out there, it confuses people's belief if wing chun is any good or effective on the streets. Can't speak for other systems, but i can speak for my own. My wing chun system has been adjusted so it can be applied in the streets. Takes what works and run with it, basically thats what i have done. I can make it effective, can you?!

    Wing Chun is designed for street fight however it's useless if the person don't know how to apply it. Same goes to other martial arts.

      You have to find what works! Master Wong's first teqniques in the intro ? I did a similar method in the karate club and picked off 3 black belts when sparring! But I had to vary teqniques for each partner. Master Wong's wing chun is very effective because over 20 years ago I joined the style: Lin Waan Sarm Sao. I picked what worked for me but eventually left because instructor was showing and teaching us teqniques that I personally can't use!

    I used to hate wing chun. About 6 months ago I was on the bus and I saw this guy demonstrating some kung fu to his friend and in my mind i was like "pfft I could beat him up easy, he's just a wannabe." two months later I bumped into him and we talked about martial arts, where he introduced me to wing chun. I started to like it more at the time and later I decided to try it out. o Dr the summer the same guy offered to teach me some for free. when I tried to attack him full power, I got my ass handed to me. one powerful centerline punch and trapping techniques were all it took. before I knew it I was on the pavement in a matter of 3 seconds. the scariest part is, he was not even close to trying and I went 200%. to this day, he still teaches me wing chun and I love it. so to those people who say wing chun is ineffective, do some more research before looking down upon it, which was a fatal mistake I made.

    The man is 100% right, not all wing chun or it’s masters are created equal. I trained in the uk for 2 years and never once did we do any live sparring. When I finally questioned the “Sifu” he said it was too dangerous. “How then do we students know it works, for it is for self defence is it not?” He suggested I find another club if I wanted to learn to fight... I since went to Kyokushin karate, which I love, but my fondness and admiration for wing chun has never gone away 🙏

    is Wing Chun effective in a Street Fight?
    if taught AND trained properly, then the answer is YES, absolutely! the art's techniques are ideal for high-pressure situations (like real street fights) in that they feature simple, biomechanically efficient defenses, counters and attacks. the training is designed to foster an aggressive approach to dealing with physical violence and the instinctual and effective use of timing, angles, distance, flow, and improvisation.
    add to this that as a principle-based art, wing chun is inherently customizable for each practitioner; longer-limber or taller guys can play the distance game with the art; athletic guys can smash through with the art, smaller guys can use the art to outmaneuver, slip away and counter, etc. etc. (i use "guys" in a non-gender-specific way, incidentally.)

      wingchun is incredibly effective you just need the same amount of training and fighting experience as an mma boxer to be good. wingchun vs mma you see online are usually not an accurate measure of how strong wingchung is because the person using wing chun only has like a year of experience when compared to someone who hhad many real fighting experiences in the ring. If wingchun allow real fights as training, it could be used competitively

    I love Master Wong's explanations why typical training won't work in the real world and the student needs to evolve what they learn. First and foremost, any trained martial artist will have an advantage in the street if they take the training seriously and doesn't matter which style it is as long as it's realistic (no flying kicks to the head lol), but keep in mind so many variables and unpredictable elements when in the streets. I, unfortunately don't have time to learn a whole new style which Wing Chun would most likely be the next if I did...but videos like this teach the mind to be more open and I appreciate them. It's the videos that try to prove there's no need to adapt because they have all the answers and beat on their students to prove their system works that annoy me.

    Any martial art can work if you train hard enough. He's correct, you do have to adapt your fighting style to street fighting. Like I do Muay Thai, but in a street fight, I'm only going to be using my boxing and elbows. Using knees, kicks and clinching in a street fight is very risky.

    • @parardhyadionandiwardhana286

      how about low kicks?

    • @kato_yang
      @kato_yang 8 лет назад

      Low kicks can be very efficient in street fighting. In Wing Chun, high kicks are very rarely used because they expose the kicker way too much, as mentioned by PoweredByTheHaters. You will seldom see a kick even at the groin, most kicks target either the ankles or knees, so that the kicker stays in contact with the ground as much as possible, allowing him to quickly react to anything.

  • @Darklight689
    @Darklight689 9 лет назад +3

    Very well put. I've been doing martial arts for a long time and have tried a wide variety of styles and it always seems to come down to how you train and on the individual rather than which style he practices. Never got to try wing chun though. I am curious, if I understand the idea behind wing chun is that most of the power comes from speed and successive strikes against an opponent because unlike karate or boxing you don't put your weight behind a strike allowing for quick recovery. Does this ever become a problem against certain opponents? Or am I just wrong on that notion.

    Hello, Master Wong. I have been following your videos for a while and liked them very much. They are treat to watch and observe.
    Now, I wish to know:
    1. In case someone does not have naturally strong hands how should he prepare to make them fight-worthy?
    2. Also how to increase physical endurance?
    3. How to build mental strength required to sustain injuries and still continue to fight? (I have read that the Samurai believed that if one went to fight thinking one would come back alive one inevitable died and vice-versa. But in an apparently civilized world you are not always prepared with such a mindset - for instance a sudden unexpected street attack that I faced recently. It took me completely off-guard. Therefore, how to maintain a steady mind to stay alert and respond with firmness to attacks.)
    Does Wing Chun have specific body-mind training and/or philosophy available for the above?

    Im just going to say this to get people out of judging if Wing Chun is really effective or not..
    First of all lets remember that there are so many different martial arts in the world and each one has one specific focus.
    What do i mean by that? I mean that all of them have an advantage and disadvantage..
    For example:
    Taekwondo: the focus is most likely knowing how to defend and attacking with kicks. So if anybody comes and attacks you with fists, thats your disadvantage. Or if someone grabs you, thats another disadvantage..
    Judo: the focus is most likely on grabbing and throwing the person on the ground, a bit like wrestling but alot more professional. But if someone with quick recovery tries to strike you with punches and kicks quickly.. thats your disadvantage
    Wing chun: its mostly knowing how to defend and attacking the uperbody with the arms, which can dodge fists easily and any kind.. but its useless against kicks or grabbing.
    Anyways i can go on but you get the point..

    • @justabeanmate5302
      @justabeanmate5302 5 лет назад

      actually as a wing chun practitioner, there are ways to defend against kicks and, but you have do it right, for grabs, if they grab your shoulders, use your wrists to go upward to their arms, and then push or kick them and try to run. For kicks we can dodge, or maybe try and smack it down, if its a low kick, then we use our shins or we kick their shin or foot then follow up, yes we have weaknesses, but there are always ways to fill in those weaknesses.

    Yea your advice is good though. the traditional stuff isnt good for street fights as they are for sparring or matches but you have to filter out the "sportsman" stuff and take what is effective and incorporate it into what you can use in a street fight. Same for MMA, jujitsu etc.

    I train in Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu jitsu, boxing, and kick boxing. However I seek to expand my "arsenal" of martial arts and wing chun Kung fu is a form I have been wanting to practice for a long time. Is there any way I could learn from you?

    I knock down 3 people using wing chun one of them had a gun and they were attacking me to harm me and rob me but i used wing chun i learned from RUclips and internet i used everything i knew and by mistake one of them was death on the spot for my attack but just because it was in self defense i didn’t have to go to jail but one thing i can say is practice makes a man perfect. Practice everyday something you know.

    In my opinion one has to separate practicing martial arts, from competition in combat sports, to being in fight for your life.
    For example. My martial arts of choice is boxing. I practice it to maintain physical fitness, and have a healthier lifestyle. I do not really compete or even spar. I am too old for it. But if I would consider sparring, I would have to be clear about what rules we will follow. However, in a life or death situation? I am neither going to care about rules or style of fighting. If that bat is available to defend myself, Id use it. Sure my boxing training gave me good punching power, evasiveness, reflexes, which I can use to gain an upper hand, but what is the point when my life is at stake?
    The same can be said for any martial arts.

    I believe Wing Chun can make you superior to boxing and kickboxing technique. I believe in it that much. Good Wing Chun would change things in MMA. No one studies it seriously.

    man this dude is defenetly right . some techniques of wing chun are usefull . but the many are bullshit on a real fight. the most findamental thing in a streetfight is grappling. after that boxing . so wing chun can just be an add to the fundamentals but never ever the essence.

      Train hard. Live clean; don't let anyone bully you! Master Wong. Ah, my friend, you possess great enthusiasm, but allow me to shed some light on my philosophy and my system. WuDe, the virtues of martial arts, are crucial in personal growth and self-awareness. Let's discuss two of them today. First, patience. Patience teaches us to control our impulses and make wise decisions. It's cultivated through techniques like holding a stance for hours to build strength and mental resilience. Second, perseverance. It instills the mindset of never giving up, teaching us that the way you do anything is the way you do everything.
      It's nurtured by practicing the same technique repeatedly until mastery is achieved. Now, my friend, remember the importance of situational awareness and quick evaluation in martial arts training. Always be mindful of your surroundings and adapt accordingly. If you wish to dive deeper into my system, Wing Chun Mastery: The Ultimate Solo Training, is the solution you seek. Summer is the perfect time for self-improvement, and I'm offering a 60% discount to help you on your journey.

    I mean the best thing you can do to defend yourself is to let go of your ego. DON'T EVER TRY TO FIGHT. Whatever style you do, how good you are don't matter if there are 4 of em and they pull out a gun. Then you're dead bruh. I be doing stupid things and tryna act tough, could've been killed. But training martial art is real good for you, just pick one that you like. Train hard, perfect it and adapt to different senerios. It's not bout what you do, it's bout how you do it

    The guard in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Bjj in general is found in early Judo. I think Robert Drysdale is doing a documentary on it called "Closed Guard" describing the early origins of ground-play. It all stems from antiquity!

    Why do some people have this obsession to try to discredit some martial arts? if you have people in this video comments telling you they have tried an it worked why do you have to doubt them? these people down even know you,,why would they lie? why would they choose a martial art that is not effective? I don't get this. maybe its just a matter of ego to demonstrate how smart some people think they are

      Watch the Steve Martin film Roxanne. :)
      Be bigger than them, don't succumb to hatred, some of them think they're being funny and are ignorant of the hurt they're causing, some are going through worse at home and some are just dicks. Fill your life outside of school/work with things you love: science, martial arts, painting, whatever and people with similar interests will eventually find you.
      There will always be annoying dickheads around though so don't hold your breath.
      Also, it's fine to grass them up and talk to a teacher/HR and come up with a list of possible answers you can choose from.
      Also don't just take my advice. I'm an idiot.

      Yojabeta123 Verbal attacks, are easier to deal with, just simply ignore them, words can't kill you physically. Have the will power to be the grown up one and just walk away. Only if they attack you have a good reason to fight back.

    It all depends. Are you going to be prepared to be aggressive? I always wanted to gather friends, spar with them, but use Wing Chun in a more aggressive realistic way. Like to where they intend to actually fight.
    I feel that any practice is pointless without that real element.

    Wing Chun is very effective, but you must regard real fight as your routing exercise instead of always only practicing movements alone. the real fight can let u understand what u are, what the enemies are, what movements you fit and how to use them as well as enhance your fighting power and reaction speed. Now, many traditional martial arts lack real fights because today there isn't any formal match or legal condition to let people use Chinese martial arts, which is so bad.
