Your tutorial is and has been most helpful. I love the franchise and never even knew there was a board game of it, so I've been trying to learn it. I'm not an experienced board game player by any stretch and this one feels quite involved to be honest, but I love the amount of detail and mechanical fidelity they managed to cram in. As for the question, Great Sword all the way, in both cases.
Great video. One thing SFG always do is they always split up all the rules for each aspect too much. My first play it took me so long to figure out the hunter token assignment becuases it wasnt in the glossary. Videos like this help with that issue. Also charge blade gang rise up
Wife and I just got this and this video helped a ton! She understood right away but I needed a visual component to help explain some of the finer details. Thanks a bunch! Love the minis by the way. I just started painting mine too! :D
I'm a huge fan of the video games, been a Greatsword main for a loooong time though I started out with the Lance and the Bow. Haven't had a chance to play the Board Game yet but I've got my all-in pledge and I'm hoping to get it to the table tomorrow! Thanks for the rules explanation!
Thank you, you did a really good job with this one! I definitely learned a lot of the basics :) Looking forward to seeing you play the campaign as well, to pick up even more rules - until I get my own copy!
I actually got into the DS as a result of watching your playthroughs. This time I already have the MHW and enjoy it immensly as shown on the channel:) Great video and very informative. Well done mate, thank you!
So we played our first game just recently, and I'm glad we didn't do any major errors during our game. Some of the rule-description are not as clear, and leave some room for interpretation. 24:55 I also appreciate the hand gesture for drawing from a empty deck 😁
I'm not sure if I happened to miss it in the instructions or what, but I cant tell what the second dial is for on the monster health tracker. The one with the single digit values
So I have question? About the Hunter tokens. So for example say there's 3 hunters playing. The previous hunter phase it says only 2 hunters can act, and after they do so they turn their tokens face down, and etc. On the next turn for the hunters, say the card says 2 Hunters can act again, does that mean only the 3rd hunter can act since he didn't go last turn, or can the previous 2 hunters attack again???
The third hunter takes their turn, and when they finish, all tokens flip back up. At that point, any of the three hunters can take their turn. Make sense? When all the tokens are face down, they all flip
What happens in the case of having 2 hunters activate, but only having 1 hunter token "active" does that one hunter take his action, then all flip back over to being active, then the team discusses who gets the other activation?
Correct. At the end of each time card resolution, the hunters check if all tokens are face down- if they are, they immediately all flip face up and any hunter may take the next turn including the hunter who just finished their turn.
what I am still hazy about on dodges and sprints is: You can play any number of cards face down for dodge (up to the necessary value to dodge the monster attack i guess?), but they will occupy only one place on the stamina board Is it the same for sprinting? so I can play 2 cards with 1 agility, occupy one slot on the stamina board, and move 2? or in the case of sprinting I need to play the two cards in 2 different stamina board spot?
@@zifnab It's not so bad. Check out my gameplay videos on Monster Hunter- On day 4 onward, I show what my stamina boards look like, so you get an idea of how I manage my stamina
@@CynicallyAwesome It can be very punishing especially in the opening when you maybe get charged, with a 3 dodge attack and you only have 1 agility cards in your hand, so your stamina board is pretty full from the get go, or you get mauled I am not saying it's an unmanageable situation. On the other hand makes the payoff of knowing the monster moveset all the better. so eeeeh, it's fine
Got a question about the rules, we broke 3 body parts of the barroth but ran out of time, do we still get the reward for the broken parts like in the videogame?
Tried playing this but found we always lose. Either we play too aggressive and lose to having little to no spaces for dodging, or we try to manage stamina and lose to time cards being horribly cruel. When we finally beat the first assigned quest we thought to fight a monster that would give good rewards for the weapons we were using. That monster was Rathalos, from playing actual MHW we assumed that 1 star quests would all be similar difficulty and that it'd just be a different moveset/resists but it's stats and armour are absurdly high. Assuming you still check comments, any tips on combat and the long metagame of campaign runs? I feel like I have to be doing something wrong
The difficulties are not created equal. A 1 star jagras is not the same as a 1 star rathalos. I couldn’t really give you advice unless I see what you’re doing, but the winning strategy comes from knowing which hits to take and which to dodge. That way you can heal/sharpen only when necessary to maximize your damage output. Try watching my play through from day 4 onward if you want to see how I manage stamina/damage
really cool paintwork, im planning on painitng my and was wondering what you used did you get a black primer first or just paint on the model directly?
Always prime your models. For these specifically, I tried a zenithal prime (spray prime black, then spray some white) then I used army painter speedpaints which worked wonders on the monsters because of their texture
Grass reduced threat by 4, water discards your top damage card and rocks give a free node of movement. These only affect hunters if they enter them- the monster ignores them completely
4 star is correct. Me saying 3 star is incorrect. I flipped to diablos because I know it’s the final monster of the book and saw its final quest was 3 star, but that’s incorrect
Probably not getting rid of it until I see what the new updated encounter cards look like. Even then, I’ll probably just use houserules to make it enjoyable. I like the IP and it’s a way to get friends who know the video game to play board games
Retail release later this year supposedly. The iceborne board game has been announced yesterday and will go live on Kickstarter may 14th with a projected delivery of Q4 2024
It’s not out yet, but it is expected to hit retail Q4 this year. They’re also going to do a Kickstarter campaign for Iceborne which is a standalone game with very similar mechanics and some components can be used back and forth. That Kickstarter starts the 16th and is expected to be fulfilled Q4 next year
Retail release later this year, exact date unknown and they’ve already announced Iceborne Kickstarter in may although that won’t get into people’s hands till Q4 2024
It’s rare for me to say the minis are good in a board game because of my wargame background, but I do like the monster models in this one. Been having a good time painting most of them

Thank you for the video, your explanation of everything is super clear and well, just excellent.

Great video we started playing so confused you helped out a ton
Also where did you get the token organizer at 0:46?
I made it myself out of foam core boards
This was real helpful, thanks bud
I'm so excited for your play through video
Super helpful video! Definitely will make learning this game easier. Thank you.
I'm not sure if I happened to miss it in the instructions or what, but I cant tell what the second dial is for on the monster health tracker. The one with the single digit values
It’s all to track health. 90 + 5 = 95 health

Did i miss something? I dont think it explain how many attack card are drawn or if we are suposed to draw them into your hand or anything?
You start with 5 cards and each time you draw a time card, it will tell you to draw back up to 5

There is no card stacking. Every card takes up one slot on the board

Great tutorial
Hi, you explain it very well. You wanna do a playthrough for the beginner quest?
Nice painting on baroth btw :)
I’m going to do a whole campaign in the wildspire waste at least. Maybe throw in some extra monsters
Great video, thanks!
Got a question about the rules, we broke 3 body parts of the barroth but ran out of time, do we still get the reward for the broken parts like in the videogame?
Unfortunately not
Where did you get the token carrier??? I need one lol I hate using plastic bags
Made it myself from foam boards and simple glue

You get one more dice for each Hunter to roll on the reward table
Sweet! Thank you kind sir! Your video and the books have helped immensely. I hope to play with friends today :].
So what exactly did the terrain tokens do? Awesome explanation as I am hoping to play the game soon. Thank you!
Grass reduced threat by 4, water discards your top damage card and rocks give a free node of movement. These only affect hunters if they enter them- the monster ignores them completely

The hunters are green and the monsters are grey. Obviously I painted them myself as soon as I could to look nice for the videos
What a super smart question 🙄

do you know what the 4 star monsters are?
Rathalos, azure rathalos, diablos, black diablos
