Ray Davies is on an exalted level of song writer/performers. Man is just friggin' brilliant. Whole band (Brother Dave in particular) are special. My favorite band of all time!
One of the many things about the Kinks I’m trying to reconcile is the 1960’s Dave-the flashy, fashionable, gregarious “raver” that he was-with this very serious 80’s musician who just stands back playing such searing, beautiful solos in such an efficient, no-nonsense manner. Gorgeous both ways of course.
What are you talking about? This was recorded in April 1982. By that time Iron Maiden already three albums out, Scorpions and Judas Priest were at album eight, Metallica were cutting demos, Def Leppard had put out two records. Not to mention Ozzy had already left Sabbath after a decade plus and had gone solo and put out Blizzard of Ozz. What do the Kinks have to do with that evolution? If anything, this song and bunch of others from Give the People What They Want is inspired by punk and metal that was already out. Your comment is basically like saying Wish I Could Fly Like Superman is the evolution of disco.
Incredible how people can get hung up about a little comment - the OP most likely referred to the fact Dave’s playing style and tone did indeed inspire what would become heavy metal. Yes, this song was much later and yes, more punk and new wave influenced than HM but let’s not trainspot and totally distort it all. Anyway, this is one of my many fave Kinks tunes.

Fukn brilliant song
Best rock lyricist EVER!!!
This is as painfully relevant, today as it was thirty years ago!
Remembers me my 13 years old, Very nice
Love this song!
The only band of their era that should get back together.
Was watching to see if Chrissie Hynde was going to make a cameo to say “Gucci” and “Cartier” but no such luck. I guess Ray did an ok job of it.
You are welcome and thank you for watching.
one of the kinks best songs.

A hilarious song. Don’t know what happens after the second chorus. I think Dave skips ahead or something. Kinda rough…but kinda Kinks. ❤️
Thought it would be the Violent Femmes’ version. I like the Kinks but Gordon Gano dammit!
