They actually ruined their own chances in American in ‘66 and were banned so they are only underrated by self promotion. They were out doing the Beatles but couldn’t control themselves. Lol. Wildly successful later but they are legends in the industry.
Only just heard of it... but I must say, it's immediately been added to my 'must buy' list... especially if there's a version which has the live performance videos too! 😄
This song is an interesting moment in rock history. You can really hear classic rock merging with disco, punk, and setting the groundwork for new wave all-in-one 6 minutes song.
Exactly , a lot of Top bands wrote Superman songs following Kinks lead . I got a tic for Concord ca , pavilion, prayed they would play it w / all their other hits . And yep , they did .
When it came out we kind of hated it for pandering to disco like the Stones , Rod Stewart and a couple of others . This song is much better than any of the other disco cop- outs . This one has Ray's traditional sense of humour .
I didn't remember this song. I think the live version is much better than the studio. It is more up tempo. I think it would have been a much bigger hit if it had been recorded like the live version. I love this one.
they are not underrated - everyone knows how good they are and they made millions. They just weren't as successful as the others because they weren't as commercial. This does NOT mean they're underrated.
I went to a Kinks concert in Atlanta, Ga. - at the Fox Theatre with an ex-US Army Airborne Ranger battle buddy, we were tripping on acid and found a half-buried Japanese Zero a block or two away from the Fox. Trippiest night of my life!
Holy COW you found a half-buried WHAT??? I really need to know lol. I never got to see them live but had their live album on cassette and wore it out it may still be near the center divider on the San Diego Freeway!
Thank you Mom for buying me tickets for Christmas to see these guys back in the day. The Kinks were my 1st concert ever. She's not here anymore but she knows that it meant a lot to me. They rock!!!! Take care and stay safe everyone 😷💚🦅🏈
Great mom! I was the same, bought my daughter tickets to go together to ACDC. She still remembered the weed smell 😂 My first concert was Village People and I paid myself. Saw Kinks twice in 80s. My favorite band. 😍
Wow!! That is so similar to my story. My mother gave me and my brother tickets to see The Kinks as a Christmas gift. The concert was in January and it was during the “Give the people what they want” tour. Can’t remember the year. Bryan Adams was the opening act. My second concert. One of the great memories of my mom. She just recently passed away.
@@getmeouttatennessee4473 that's so cool! I took my daughter to her 1st & 2nd concert. Her first was Selena Gomez & The Scene back in 2010. Her 2nd was Idina Menzel in Atlantic City. I got to see The Kinks twice when Think Visual was released. Once at Canada's Wonderland and once at Massey Hall. I hope they come back to Toronto when they go out on tour again.
My brother in law was a Schenectady, NY cop who earned extra money by doing “security details”. One was to provide security for The Kinks at a downtown theater they were playing. He said the band invited him into the dressing room area and he spent the next two hours drinking beers and hanging with The Kinks. How do you beat that ?? He had a blast.
Low Budget tour yielded One for the Road, one of the best Live albums ever. It belongs alonside classic's like Deep Purple Made in Japan, Who Live at Leeds, first 2 Rush live LPs, Frampton Comes Alive, (insert your favorites here)!
I saw the Kinks life at the Orpheum in Memphis, TN in about 1979. Then a couple years later after I moved to Atlanta. My young Son was with me he was maybe 6 or 7 the first time. The second time he was 8 years old. It was the Atlanta Civic Center. A great show. This song I remember so well. I still have the One for tge Road LP. My Son died with my 1st wife in a car accident in March of 84' the week before his 9th birthday
I am listening to this song now and will be listening to the Kinks until further notice. You can not listen to only one song by them, that would be ludicrous!
I am almost done with Dave Davies' excellent autobiography "Kink" right now and it has given me a new appreciation for this band. They can't be under rated when they were one of the early Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees but in my opinion they were more consistant than The Stones or The Who or Pink Floyd. They put out some seriously great music in the late 70s and early 80s
@@luvittodeath7031 Ray Davies, back in the 60s, actually said The Kinks were "pop music" - as in popular music - and called their music "expression." Funny as I just started singing it out loud yesterday! I'm a real music aficionado and although my memory sucks on many things, I REALLY remember good songs and bands that came out when I was a kid. Was 12 when this came out. This and Destroyer were instant hits in my mind!
Ray the front man, he knows how to put on a show. I agree with a lot you. The kinks where under rated. Then 4 years could not play in ca .I think other bands feared the kinks.
Fun fact: Dave and Ray have been known to get into fights on stage on occasion. I don't know if there's any RUclips footage to back this up but as someone who's followed them since 1980 I know I've heard a few reports here and there. “Underrated” to those who have no clue. 😎

They're only underrated because everybody knows the Kinks for "Lola" but not the 20+ other hits they came out with, like this song.
Ray and Kinks forever!!
One For The Road is easily one of the very best live albums in all of Rock & Roll
Definitely. They sound so good, Low Budget was a great comeback album, and it was great to hear the classics with stuff like Superman.

This song is archetypal medicine for the doldrums. It has the beat, the guitar licks, the self-reflective social commentary lyrics, everything.
