From bitter enemies to one of our best allies. Hooray for Japan. I'm glad they got to tour one of our carriers.

Always found it fascinating how the guard rails retracted into the deck.

My carrier, CV-67, didn't have that, they were manual, stantions, placed in holes, I guess too many drunken sailors, fell from liberty.

I’m shocked they are letting civilians ride on the deck edge elevator. I was a MM on the USS NASSAU and my division ran all the Hydraulics on the ship. Aircraft elevators, cargo weapons elevators, all the deballasting ops, aft steering ect. When ever PMS was required to grease the guide rails on the aircraft elevators we were required to wear safety harnesses that locked into the pad eyes. This was required because the aircraft elevators are moved by hydraulics and air pressure, which if not properly monitored by the operator in the machine room can cause the elevator to bounce quite violently if the air pressure gets to be to high in the machine room and would throw people off the elevator is standing close to the edge or cause someone to be severely hurt. I have seen the elevators do this with CH-53s being lowered down into the hangar bay. Thank the lord that the aircraft is properly secured down to the elevator or else that multi-million dollar Bird could of went flying into the ocean. Stuff like this happened because certain individuals who were not properly qualified to operate the machinery room did not know the proper hydraulic and air pressures that needed to be maintained while lowering or raising the aircraft elevators. I remember one time it was the airmen’s fault because they did not properly verify all the locks were retracted on out aft aircraft elevator and when lowering it the 1 lock was still extended and got the elevator caught at a 45 degree angle with all the hydraulic pressure bearing down on that one lock!! And the elevator was loaded with a quarter million dollars worth of Airedale equipment they were bringing down from the hanger bay, and none of the equipment was properly secured or tied down to the pad eyes, because we were in port!! Holy hell this was a mess when we finally were able to take some pressure off of the lock to get it to retract it was to late, there was already way to much damage done to the whole wire ropes system and when it did retract the aircraft elevator shots up and down about 10 feet in each direction!! It shook the whole 840’ foot ship violently !! All in all there was multimillions of dollars of damage down to the elevator an equipment that was not secured. The Navy even had to bring in NCIS to investigate the matter. So basically those damn elevators are dangerous and i can’t believe they let civilians ride them like that!!

Probably cause they're in Japan where people aren't rewarded for stupidity and don't blame others for said stupidity.

Aircraft carrier design is radically different today than it was 40 years ago. Also, riding an aircraft elevator on a docked ship has much fewer safety issues than riding one on a ship as it's moving in the open sea. Though falling overboard is always unpleasant the risk of death is much lower for a ship that is tied to a dock. It seems to be a safer mode of moving a large group of people, especially those with disabilities, than having them attempting to scurry up and down ladders or stairs.
