I've been welding more than fifty years, but feel like I've learned as much in the last few weeks, as in any period in my life. You've got a good eye, great technique, and fine hand skills. I sort of wish I could spend a couple months working with you in your shop. Thanks for showing this power hammer build, I've got to look in my shop and see what I don't have. Thanks!
I'm an 84 year old. I read any articles that were published in Hot Rod (bought first addition in '48 and every one after for many years), Car Craft, Honk, Rod & Custom concerning body work. Painted my first car when I was about 12 using a "bug-a-boo" sprayer. I decromed my bro's car, filling in the holes with "liquid soldier" I have learned more from any one of your videos than I learned from reading all those magazines. You inspire me, but I'm too old to get into what I am learning from you. I would like to see you do a project using a 55 gal. barrel for material. From my measurements, they are about 18 to 20 gauge. Like you said when building the door on the Zepher, material gets expensive when you make a mistake. I'm interested in how you would flatten the barrel out to get it useful for a body project.
I'm 100% sold! Thanks for building the hammer and getting us a discount! Car Karl, your welds are fantastic. I only have MIG, do you think that is fine or should I wait to upgrade to TIG. I'd love to see a video where you talk TIG and give a demonstratiion. maybe even talk about machine set up, functions and the process. Thanks for another epic video!
I've been looking to add a power hammer to my arsenal and have been looking at the Shape-O-Matic. I watched this video and greatly appreciate seeing it go together. It gives me confidence in the Shape-O-Matic kit (not really a question, actually), but also gives me confidence in my being able to put it together and have a worthy machine.
I don't know about the rest of the peeps on here, but sometimes I get in a sh!tty mood on Sunday nights, dreading work the following Monday. Then I saw your tool build video, instant Happy! Great video Karl, thanks for all that you share with us!
Hey😁, I’m more of a woodworker than a metal guy but it’s always awesome watching a good craftsman in any trade and learning about available tooling. Thanks from Nova Scotia 😁
Karl, I cannot thank you enough for this tutorial on how to build your own trip hammer/power hammer!! Some pillow blocks, old compressor for belt pulley and motor and some misc steel and boom! I hope somebody sends you a little machinist's square, they are so much more accurate and easier to use than that carpenter's "speed square". You can even get a little cheap one that's better for less than 5 bucks at harbor freight so I assume princess auto as well. Thanks again!
Halfway through watching you put this together I wondered about what colour you were/are going to paint it. I think it would look really good in a matt clear coat, not rubbed back, just wiped clean and cleared, so the TIG weld colours are still visible. Watching you create magic with metal is so relaxing and inspiring.
Well done man! Great to see the new and improved one setup! Looks like you put it in the wall when you installed it, definitely wasn’t me… haha. Really looking forward to seeing the new attachment going on!
Like your videos! Clear instructions on how to's,, good music but not when you're talking. Thank you!! I'm looking forward to building these metal working tools and starting a 20's racer project.
That’s a really neat kit that he offers, everything u really need to make it work and leave out some of the big bulky items that can be bought from any local metal distributor. I love the shipping crate too, that’s a nice coffee table if I ever seen one!! Very cool video, I think this will definitely sell him a few kits having you give an in depth how-to. Tell Brenda I miss her and am eagerly awaiting her comeback video!! 😍🤣
I love seeing the prep work you do before you weld. Makes for really pretty welds. It might be helpful to fill the main body with sand or something else heavy, the extra mass will make the hammer more stable.
This is an awesome video man. I haven't been watching lately I've been doing projects but when i saw this i had to stop and watch. I so happy that such a good person is starting to pick up. Keep the video's coming man i try to make time to at least play them when I'm doing stuff.
Finally managed to watch the whole video.. sorry Karl. Driving trucks through the night and then trying to watch my favourite fab channel sometimes means I doze off. Anyhoo, another Make It Custom vid perused stuff learnt and thoughts of how to utilise these things at home logged and recorded. Keep Making it Kustom…
Found your channel last night and already watched a bunch of your videos... you're awesome man. I have no use for this hammer but I wanna build one just from watching this lol
Great video. Your machine is just crying out for a custom plate in the area bellow the gusseted arm. We need to see a video on your CNBC plasma cutter and how you use it
Well I'd say you were not disappointed with your latest acquisition. It's a cross between heavy industry and steampunk but it just looks soo right . I'm sure its gonna be a great asset to the shop and I'm certain we will see some amazing metalwork panels getting flattened into an amazing shape . As always Karl an amazing video and worth the wait . Many thanks for sharing
Yes I’m very happy to have this machine again! I used one for a few years and recently sold it to a friend when I ordered this one. For me it’s a must have in the shop
Love the video, always great to see you fired up about something. I have never done metal shaping with one of those but it looks useful as all get out. Thank you
Great video, I still have to obtain two important to me: TIG and Plasma Cutter. My metal fab will be equipped to tackle what my age can no longer do with manual tools.
Hell yeah. Sweet ass machine right there Karl. An the personalized gussets, perfect signature...sweet! As usual, another great video Karl. Keep the them coming, keeps me coming back for more! Always look forward to seeing your next video!!! Keep On Keeping On Brother!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I enjoyed the video. You’re a very talented craftsman. Just a comment on the design of the base. A simpler design would have the 2x2 that holds the dies run straight to the ground. This would direct the forces straight down to the base and not through all the bracing. It could then be attached to the 4x4 with 2x2s for rigidity. This eliminates all the angle cuts and and reduces a lot of the welding.
do you think it could be lowered 6-8" for knifemaking? the dies sit little high for hammers knives but the unit is amazing and I think it would make shaping a knife billet super easy.
Such a professional presenter, streets ahead of the rest, luv ya work mate! I’ve started collecting some tools to give my ute a spruce up. Keep those vids coming buddy.
Dude I just scored two new open box evolution chop saws for $150 bucks each. Ones the 14” blue steel chop saw and other is 10” multi material dual bevel slide miter! They are amazing saws!
Karl, once you receive, assemble, & install the already-ordered accessory for your Sosa Metalworks Shape-O-Matic hammer, you should take all of it to your local power-coating business for finishing. Now I want one of these hammers too! ;)
Mommy, will just love peeking into your little craft corner, an seeing her new tool look really pretty. Or would you build to do real work with, like a Man 👨
Neat trick to get more angle out of the evolution saw. Take a look at the bed of the saw and you will see that there is another set of holes for the stationary fence closer to the clamping fence. This is to get the work out where the blade can cut it on high angle cuts. The extra piece of stock worked ok though. I think there is a practical limit to how much of an angle you want to try to cut on if the steep angle allows the blade to kick the piece it could jam the saw. If you have not had the saw fling something across the shop yet when you do you will need new shorts.
@@MakeItKustomMine has only sent steel into low earth orbit when the blade was extremely dull or shaving a sliver off of something that gets jammed in the blade. I have a healthy respect for the inertia in circular saws.
No it's I who thanks you...you do such an awesome job putting together your channel...the filming ,the editing, presentation... Let alone the workmanship.. And you do all of this not for yourself ,but for us the public... Thank you Karl...I truly look forward to the next episode MAKE IT CUSTOM...LOVE LIFE LIVE LONG
You are one heck of a fabricator and very humble. Love your work and your videos.
Thanks a lot Michael!

Fantastic build very informative. Wonderfull music, background, NOT LOUD. old people w hearing aids, appreciate that. THANK YOY
Damn good job. You always go beyond what's required! That's why you're a young master.

same question - I have mig and stick.
Mig and stick are totally fine for heavy stuff you definitely don’t need to tig welds for this machine www.sosametalworks.com/machines
That handy little burn table comes to the rescue YET AGAIN... Great job, excellent video! Thanks Karl.
Mike I can’t tell you how much that little tables changed my life and saved me time
Love that box too. Glad you said right off the bat that you were keeping it. Drive me nuts if you hadn't said. Thanks😜😜😍

I truly enjoy watching your builds as inspiration to future skills. Amazing! Thanks, JD
Awesome JD glad to hear it!
Karl, just my way of thinking, but that build is a beauty, I would clear coat it…… that way it is raw art. Great job. John
I did have that thought. They make a clear powder coat now

Thanks for explaining the reason behind clamping the miter stop. Rate this saw out of 10, I am thinking of getting one.

Are the dies universal? or do I have to get them from sosa?
