Man it's SO cool that Dan would set up some kind of medium to get kids passionate about something and get them out exploring the world around them. I've only just discovered this channel, and I don't have a metal detector, but if anyone could get people excited about a hobby it's Dan. Come on! Get in!

@ 2:50 the tide does go sideways actually its called long shore drift it comes in sideways then goes backwards towards the sea know as backwash, this is how beaches move and the reason tidal defenses like groynes are put in place to stop the beaches from moving. there's an answer to your pondering

Hey Dan, I have a suggestion for you. When you can, get your self a sand scoop for digging in the sand. Sand scoops came in all different sizes and styles, plastic and metal, and all different price ranges.

so DDD, how much did the beach finally weigh. You kept finding pounds, but never said how many pounds it weighed. Also wanted to thank you. You peaked my original interest in Metal Detecting, and with some encouragement from Aquachigger here in the states, I will finally be getting started in it as soon as I can figure out how to afford the machine. I am very interested in the American Civil War and I live in an area where some of it took place. But being a disabled veteran, money is a little tight. Thanks again for all the great videos, and whatever you do, don't quit making them. When I watched the video where you said you were going to quit, it broke my heart! So please, don't ever give up. You are an inspiration to many people.

I didn't see an answer in the comments, but that piece of squiggly iron you found in the beginning is a piece of a metal pole that held barbed wire, there was a screw end that went in the sand and there was usually three or four loops that you ran the barbed wire through. Nice find! I have a whole one I will take a picture of for you if your interested. Happy Hunting! :)

You're a fun dad. Btw, 3:13 the tide always comes in the same direction due to the angle of the surface the beach. Also, the gravitational pull from the moon as well as the sun and other orbiting bodies causes the water levels to go up & down :>

I see that your Daughter must have gotten her good looks from her Mother! LOL Very nice that she takes an interest in you and TH'ing. Have you gotten her a detector yet? About the drill holes in the beach rocks those are actually ancient worm holes that have fossilized. Also if you have a basket on your bike you might consider collecting all the scrap metal & take it home to recycle for cash. I carry several 5-gallon buckets with me & remove everything I locate in or on the ground.

Hey Dan! Those holes in the rocks weren't put there by a person. Those have been there since they were formed from magma. When they were liquid, they had gas bubbles in them, and then they cooled and solidified in a way that left the little pockets behind from the gas.

Tides, the nutshell version: The gravity of the sun and moon pull water in their direction to the part of where the earth is facing them. This increases the depth of the water at that point causing the water to move inland and never sideways. As that part of the earth rotates away from the Sun and the moon, the depth of the water decreases causing the water to move back out to sea. So the tides come in as the depth of the water increases and the tides go out as the depth of the water decreases. Think of it as the land sinking a little as the tides come in and resurfacing a little as the tides go out.

Hi again, oh Exhalted One !!!
I'm not sure if you are just "taking the piss" haha, at 6:15, regarding all the 'drilled' holes in small round rocks.
(Considering your proclivity for tongue-in-cheek humour), but in case not, there is a logical natural explanation !!!
Clams etc are often attacked by Mollusks, and using a circular rasp-like 'tongue', and grind through the shell-fish
to get to the editable flesh inside. Often, they come accross such a Clam shaped stone, and think it is a clam.
So they GRIND their way through, (should be only a millimetre or two), but after 4-5 millimetres they give up!!!!!!
They will even try again on another spot on the same stone. It must piss them off, hahaha.....
    For instance.... See.... beachchairscientist.com/2008/11/07/why-are-there-holes-through-some-clam-shells/
