He didn't "block" for 2k yard rushers. His OLine did They had to put in Dwayne Carswell and pay him a lot of money cause Shannon couldn't block at all. In Baltimore they had to put in Ben Coates. You always needed a great TE2 to block cause Shannon had limitations. Of the top 10-12 TEs ever ( I got him 6th btw) he is easily the worst blocker. Even Worse than Kelce. I gove you that he is the closest thing to a WR playing TE we have ever seen. Probably Darrem Waller is now but yeah.
@@erikpuka2627 That's actually not true, in the slightest (except that it's still always more the whole Oline than just a TE causing that success in the run game). Sharpe thrived under the zone-run blocking scheme Shanahan put in. In general, zone-run schemes don't depend on linemen to be as big, but do require movement and skill. His agility and strength allowed him to get to his spots quick enough to be effective. Shannon wasn't the tallest or biggest Tight End, so they'd bring in blocking specialists especially for larger packages. Jumbo packages or goal line packages come to mind. His size did originally make his first coaches think he couldn't play TE, but he eventually won them over. Watching the plays, he was involved in the run game for sure. Most teams have blocking specialist TE's even if their best TE is a good blocker. Is George Kittle a better blocker? Yeah. Was Shannon a bad blocker? Not at all.
@@erikpuka2627 I'm going to presume you don't watch 49ers game. There isn't a better blocker than Kittle at TE. Most NFL and former NFL players acknowledge this. He's the best blocking TE in the league. Sure, on goal line packages maybe you'd rather have Gronk, but he just retired so... The Zone run schemes actually require better blockers and sometimes ask Kittle to block two different people. Is it for a little less long, and require more quickness than size? Sure. It doesn't just "carry them." They move people. Kittle moves people. Film breakdown after film breakdown; people analyzing exactly which play they're running and how it's unfolding, reveal Kittle to be a superb blocker. Not just good or solid, but superb. So no, that's a baseless accusation. The only thing overrated about Kittle, is his impact on a fantasy football team, because he does get banged up pretty often. He's the best all-around TE in the league when healthy, but one can't deny Travis Kelce's continuous ability to stay healthy (though he's not the blocker Kittle is).
