- I've been working on trying to get rid of a bacterial bloom for a few weeks now. I've tried a few cheap UV sterilizers to get the job done, and none have proven to be worthy, except this one. The Coralife 5w Mini UV Sterilizer. Tom unboxes it, and shows you how he set it up in his 10 gallon nano reef tank.

Tom, I currently have 2 freshwater, 3 fish only saltwater, and 3 nano reef tanks. All tanks, except 2 of the nano's, have permanent UV's that I run 12 hours a day. The 2 nano's share the HOB UV I mentioned before, as needed. Since running UV I have seen a real improvement in water clarity, no algae blooms, no bacteria blooms, and no outbreak of any diseases (knock on wood). I am a true believer in UV for aquariums.
Good to hear that LKap. 👍🏻I’m tempted to use the UV on my 20 gal. To see if I can clear it up a bit.
So, I started using it after getting Dino's and it helped. After I haven't taken it out and it's my filtration. I like to think it helped on everything pest related 😅🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hi Israel, good to hear it helped with Dinos. Keeping it in for pest related security is a wise idea😊👍🏻
Hi Tom, nice 2 part video. Glad the coralife worked out better. I've never used a UV sterilizer but I'm impressed with how clear it made the water in the 10 gal. Looking Good!
Hi A, thanks! Yes, it worked quite well. It’s a good device to have if you need it. Not sure I would run one 24/7 but great in certain situations 👍🏻😊
Hi Tom. In my fresh water tank I turn on 8h the uv strerilizers. Nice video. 10g come back.
Hey Jean, ok an 8 hour day 👍🏻😊I’m sure most UV will help. I’m happy to bring the 10g back! 😃
Hey Tom! I ended up going with a Aquatop PF-15 hang on back filter with a UV built in. It works great! I’m glad I didn’t go with that cheap UV bulb only! I agreed that it would do any good! Thanks for talking me out of getting that bulb!
Hey Bobcat, 😊 I believe you made the right choice👍🏻and you get added benefit with the hang on being a filter. 👍🏻
Hey Tom, great video. I have the same sterilizer for my biocube. Nice to see the results you got from it. I only plan to run mine as needed.
Hi Jason, that’s a good idea. I’ve tried UV in the past and never really saw the benefit. But it comes in handy from Tim to time 😊👍🏻
I've only used UV to kill Osteoropsis *
I like to keep clams and I prefer not to sterilize the water column. Unless it's medically necessary
Thanks for the comment 03. I agree. 👍🏻
Hey Tom another informational video thank you I try to stay traditional I notice a lot of freshwater hobbyists are going to UV sterilizers as well as part of their filtration
Hi Chris, I agree, if you don’t need one, they’re not really necessary. But they can help in a pinch with some issues 👍🏻
@@TOMReefer I'm going to keep that in mind for the future thank you Tom
I don't think i've ever seen any brain coral or favia in your tanks. I may be wrong. You should try some. And Florida Ricordia. What a great coral it is.
Hey Steven, you’re right. Maybe in the 10g this time around 👍🏻😊
@@TOMReefer I recommend Dragon Soul Favia and a nice Orange/Green Ricordia Fl.
Thanks Steven! I’ll check into it 👍🏻😊
Need something even smaller for my five gallon pico reef :/ Good video!
Hi Trenton Cook, is that Trenton Nj? 😊 So, I’m not sure if they make the UV’s much smaller then this. However, you don’t need to run it all the time. If you have a bloom of sorts, just use it until the bloom is gone. In my 30 years experience Trenton, you don’t really need a UV on a regular basis. 👍🏻
@@TOMReefer Running through a bit of an ugly stage currently, trying to ride it out with increasing the frequency of water changes, dosing pods from my culture, and feeding a tad less. Just hate staring at an ugly tank lol. This would be too physically tall for the custom five gallon I made so I've been looking at adding a sealed UV bulb to my AIO filter section away from eyesight and animals, may prove easier in that way. Great video!
24 time running uv in tank
Can you do an update on this? How's the reliability?
hi, I can tell you I like the similar size green killing machine works much better 👍🏻
@TOMReefer haha. Damn. I just installed it on my 20g aio. I also looked into the green machine but I this seems more compatible with my tank and rest of my equipment.
I reduced my flow to about 50% of the mighty jet mini. I hope it works out
You should be fine. Both work ok👍🏻
Have the EXACT same setup in several of my nanos accept I run mine off a smart plug programmed to turn the UV and pump on every other day for 12 hrs each time. 100% positively no reason to run UV 24/7 in saltwater or fresh. Every other day is more than good enough. I run all the UV's in all my 60+ fresh and saltwater tanks from 2.5 gallons all the way up to a pair of my 250 gallons and my 350 gallon this way and haven't had algae or disease outbreaks in any of them for years.
Hi Tom, I agree, UV isn’t necessary 24/7. Sounds like you have some great sets ups! A lot of tanks there! 😊👍🏻keep on reefing
@TOM Reefer Yeah, great setups but way to many to deal with and be able to have a normal life. Time to downsize by at least half.
How long do you keep the UV light on?
Usually 48 hours, or until the water clears
I have a coralife uv sterilizer. The unit itself has been great but the fittings not so much. Have had the original and replacements both crack. Just bad luck i suppose.
Hey FP, I noticed that the fittings were not great fits. I could see how they may have cracked on you. I only needed the top, and it just barely squeezed on.👍🏻
@@TOMReefer yup. Plastic is very thin. To specify a bit more they cracked after like 3 months of use. Luckily i was home
If UV kills bacteria, will it kill the beneficial bacteria we need to main the Nitrogen Cycle in the fish tank? I like the idea of a UV Sterilizer getting rid of any bacteria or parasite that may harm the fish as well as potential algae problems. I've had problems with hair and Black Beard algae before in a low tech planted nano tank with only a full spectrum LED light. I don't use any fertilized substrates, fertilizers, or have CO2. I know CO2 helps get rid of algae, since the plants will suck up more nutrients with the added CO2. But what really interested me is being able to prevent bacterial and parasitic infections in the fish through UV Sterilization.
Hi Maico, Most beneficial bacteria grow on surfaces in your tank. So unless the bacteria passes through the UV light there is no issue. In the case of a bloom, bacteria is in excess, so it makes it way into the water column, thus passing through the UV and killing it. 👍🏻😊
@@TOMReefer Thank you! I am definitely getting one now! Great video! 🤗
Just a quick follow up. I would recommend the Green Killing Machine as opposed to the coralife. It far more effective.👍🏻
Do you think it will work with the maxijet 1200. I was planning on having that installed with my return pump.
Not sure what the maxijet GPH is. You only want about 90-100 GPH through a UV 👍🏻
@@TOMReefer I am going to try this UV. I know it has flimsy parts.
Hey Tom question here on the water sterilizer should I run it on my Evo 13.5 24 hrs to keep the water clear
Hi George, UV is not a necessary piece of equipment for your tank, but lots of people run them. I used this one because of this bacterial bloom. It’s off now and my water is still very clear. 👍🏻😊
T can’t get my nitrate UP ! Stuck at 0 and have stopped dosing . Nitrates and phosphate . Both zero wtf I am opposite of everyone . Wtf. Lol 😝 I am a lil nervous thinking I should not dose nitrate and phos. My refuge is doing great the green hair is just about gone. I am running 50 gallons of water in a 30 display and my fudge is working too good I think 🤔 .
Everyone should be so lucky!😃 if everything looks good enjoy it! Don’t worry about the numbers👍🏻😊
