5D Classic in Low Light

  • I stepped outside my comfort zone with this one by forcing myself to take a lot more photos than I would usually take. None of which were thought out much.
I was overshooting for the sole purpose of getting sample photos for this video. Aimed at showing how the 5D classic handles in these very challenging situations, even without any of the advanced tricks that experienced photographers can use in order to compensate.
Walking through a local night market.
    The 5D Classic and 35mm f1.4
Manual Exposure settings, which I just guessed at.
    Manual White Balance at 5700k
Single Point AF, focusing and recomposing.
Lots of cropping on several photos.
    Moving subjects.
Lots of light sources (varying in intensity and color temperature).
    No flash.
    No tripod.
    No Photoshop or AI stuff.
No noise reduction applied (either in camera or in post).
    No upscaling.
Just a guy with his 5D Classic and a single prime lens, casually taking photos at a night market.

Loved this. Really nice ambience in the videos audio and I could really imagine being there. Some great captures too. Hands down the Canon 5D is such a capable camera. Used mine last night at a party, maxed out the ISO and the files are so clean and lovely to work with. Canon got it right first time.

Nice! Your videos are the reason I decided on purchasing the 5D and 5Dll. I just need to get out more and experiment with different lighting situations. Your results look pretty good!

Nice night photos the camera always performs well. The 5D classic will accept a boatload of Russian glass using a M 42 to cannon adaptor. I have adapted my Nikon F lenses to it as well. If you can find the Nikor 105 it is fantastic .

I have always wanted to get my hands on a Nikkor 105mm f2.5 ais, for obvious reasons. I have used a lot of great M42 glass, but I have never tried any of the old Soviet stuff.

While many avoid using this camera for low light situations, nice to see you experimenting.. I hesitate using in low light conditions as I never liked going below 1/100 shutter speed for hand held shots. I like the warm colors..

I was actually shooting at 1/125 most of the night. I dropped down to 1/90 a few times but found it wasn't really necessary. I wish I would have set the white balance to Auto, though, just to see how it would have guessed each scene given the challenging lighting.

Interesting you took the 5d over the d700 in low light. I have both and can’t decide which I like better.

I was primarily motivated by the fact that so many people seem to think that the 5D Classic can't be used for low light.

@@SkylerKing understood. I’ve had no issue with the 5d in low light. I think the main thing with modern cameras is it allows people to screw up badly and still rescue a shot.
What is interesting is when comparing identical photos and settings…most people still choose the 5d colors in a blind test over my D700, 5dsr, and fujis. The only one they seem to like better than the 5d classic is the Leica MP240. I have too much crap but I like to tinker and play. Cheaper than some hobbies for sure.

Never too many cameras, as long as you enjoy and appreciate all of them. I have never had a Leica. I always wanted to give the M9 a whirl, though, since it has a very rare combination of Leica + Kodak CCD + Full Frame.

@@SkylerKing for the money the m9 isn’t worth it. The mp240 is the best value M body around. Robust, good battery. Could easily pick it up with a voigtlander 50mm 1.5 II or 35mm f2. Leica does reds right and in photography that’s important to me.
