  • The TL:DR is “No”, but the reasons why you shouldn’t let your SSD be ravaged by defrag software is worth knowing, and you’ll learn a little about how SSDs work in the process. Neat!

Very Helpful. 40 years old and I only googled TODAY what I was doing all these years when I would "defrag" my drives LOL!

If you have a Windows 11 PC or Laptop with an SSD, you’ll notice it says “[Operator Shield Icon] Optimize.” After optimizing your HDD, I assume it says “Last Defrag: x Time Ago.” But I can say that for SSDs, it will say this: Last Trimmed x Time ago.” I’ve tried looking for the defrag command out of curiosity and couldn’t find it. I knew it was harmful and was not going to run it. However, the fact I couldn’t find it is doubtlessly a good thing. I have a Kingston 2TB SSD that can reach 200MB/s on 5G and 1GB/s on Ethernet, of course I don’t want to waste it!
Hard drives can have between 10k-30k writing cycles available, and SSDs can write about 100k times per cell, if I’m not mistaken. And one cell is about 1 bit, being about 1/8 of a byte. SSDs use data blocks, and each of those has about 4KB of data. You delete a file that contains 45 bytes, the remaining 3,955 bytes have to be rewritten. So, if a defrag tries to move around the data blocks, it can cause problems. Dozens of cycles will be wasted removing and pasting data when the drive is already optimized to read scattered data, unlike an HDD, which needs related files closer together.

Thank you for the explanation. Is there a way to “refresh” an SSD’s health and extend its life? For example by periodically erasing and reformatting it (after backing up your stuff).

Any writing to the ssd will degrade the storage, less writing will make it last longer so useless writing to it will just take up more lifespan

Bullshit .......... I defrag mine everyday , just as on a Old Hardddive , you just need to do it from several ways to optimize the One you have .
